  • In this paper, two dimensional vertical and comer infinite elements which can include multiple wave components to model underlying half space are developed. These elements are natural and economical to model underlying stiff half space or rock. To verify the behavior of these infinite elements, vertical, horizontal, and rocking compliances of a rigid strip foundation on a viscoelastic soil profile are analyzed and compared with those of Tzong and Penzien who used the boundary solution method. Good agreements are noticed between the two methods. The influence of material properties like Poisson's ratio, material damping, and stiffness ratio of layers as well as the influence of geometrical properties such as layer thicknesses and depth of foundation embedment are studied. Example analysis is carried out for the shaking table which is located in KIMM(Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials), and the vertical and horizontal displacements of the analysis are compared with the measured, and show good results and demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method.

  • In this study, Pasternak foundation model, which is a two parameter foundation model, is used to analyze the behavior of laterally loaded beams embedded in semi-infinite media. Total potential energy variation of the system is written to formulate the problem that yielded the required field equations and the boundary conditions. Shear force discontinuities are exposed within the boundary conditions by variational method and are validated by photo elastic experiments. Exact solution of the deflection of the beam is obtained. Both foundation parameters are obtained by self calibration for this particular problem and loading type in this study. It is shown that, like the first parameter k, the second foundation parameter G also depends not only on the material type but also on the geometry and the loading type of the system. On the other hand, surface deflection of the semi infinite media under singular loading is obtained and another method is proposed to determine the foundation parameters using the solution of this problem.

  • The problem of sound radiation from infinite elastic beams under the action of harmonic point forces is studied. The reaction due to fluid loading on the vibratory response of the beam is taken into account. The beam is assumed to occupy the plane z = 0 and to be axially infinite. The beam material and the elastic foundation re assumed to be lossless and Bernoulli-Euler beam theory including a tension force (T), damping coefficient (C) and stiffness of foundation $(\kappa_s)$ will be employed. The non-dimensional sound power is derived through integration of the surface intensity distribution over the entire beam. The expression for sound power is integrated numerically and the results are examined as a function of wavenumber ratio$(\gamma)$ and stiffness factor$(\Psi)$. Here, our purpose is to explain the response of sound power over a number of non-dimensional parameters describing tension, stiffness, damping and foundation stiffness.

  • The present research intends to study the effects of the seismic soil-foundation-structure interaction (SFSI) on the dynamic response of various buildings. Two methods including direct and Cone model were studied through 3D finite element method using ABAQUS software. Cone model as an approximate method to consider the SFSI phenomenon was developed and evaluated for both high and low rise buildings. Effect of soil nonlinearity, foundation rigidity and embedment as well as friction coefficient between soil-foundation interfaces during seismic excitation are investigated. Validity and performance of both approaches are evaluated as reference graphs for Cone model and infinite boundary condition, soil nonlinearity and amplification factor for direct method. A series of calculations by DeepSoil for inverse earthquake record modification was conducted. A comparison of the two methods was carried out by root-mean-square-deviation (RMSD) tool for maximum lateral displacement and story shear forces which verifies that Cone model results have good agreement with direct method. It was concluded that Cone method is a convenient, fast and rather accurate method as an approximate way to count for soil media.

  • Generally, mass concrete structural behavior is governed by the strain components. However, relevant guidelines in dam engineering evaluate the structural behavior of concrete dams using stress-based criteria. In the present study, strain-based criteria are proposed for the first time in a professional manner and their applicability in seismic failure evaluation of an arch dam are investigated. Numerical model of the dam is provided using NSAD-DRI finite element code and the foundation is modeled to be massed using infinite elements at its far-end boundaries. The coupled dam-reservoir-foundation system is solved in Lagrangian-Eulerian domain using Newmark-${\beta}$ time integration method. Seismic performance of the dam is investigated using parameters such as the demand-capacity ratio, the cumulative inelastic duration and the extension of the overstressed/overstrained areas. Real crack profile of the dam based on the damage mechanics approach is compared with those obtained from stress-based and strain-based approaches. It is found that using stress-based criteria leads to conservative results for arch action while seismic safety evaluation using the proposed strain-based criteria leads to conservative cantilever action.

  • A proper physical modeling of infilled building frame-foundation beam-soil mass interaction system is needed to predict more realistic and accurate structural behavior under static vertical loading. This is achieved via finite element method considering the superstructure, foundation and soil mass as a single integral compatible structural unit. The physical modelling is achieved via use of finite element method, which requires the use of variety of isoparametric elements with different degrees of freedom. The unbounded domain of the soil mass has been discretized with coupled finite-infinite elements to achieve computational economy. The nonlinearity of soil mass plays an important role in the redistribution of forces in the superstructure. The nonlinear behaviour of the soil mass is modeled using hyperbolic model. The incremental-iterative nonlinear solution algorithm has been adopted for carrying out the nonlinear elastic interaction analysis of a two-bay two-storey infilled building frame. The frame and the infill have been considered to behave in linear elastic manner, whereas the subsoil in nonlinear elastic manner. In this paper, the computational methodology adopted for nonlinear soil-structure interaction analysis of infilled frame-foundation-soil system has been presented.

  • In many dynamic problems such as foundation vibrations ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation and blasting analysts are confronted with the problem of wave propagation in an infinite or semi-infinite media. In order to simulate this situation by a finite analytical model provisions must be made to absorb the stress waves arriving at the boundary. Absorbing boundaries are mathematical artifacts used to prevent wave reflections at the boundaries of discrete models for infinite media under dynamic loads. An analytical study is carried out to examine the effectiveness of Lysmer-Kuhlemeyer model one of the most widely used absorbing boundaries. Validity of the absorbing boundary conditions suggested by Lymer-Kuhlemeyer is examined by adopting the solution of Ewing et al. to the problem of plane waves from a harmonic normal force on the surface of an elastic half-space. The Ewing's problem is than numerically simulated using the finite element method on a semi-circular mesh with and without absorbing boundaries which are represented by viscous dashpots. The absorption ratios are calculated by comparing the displacements at the absorbing boundaries to those at the free field without absorbing boudaries.

  • In this paper, two dimensional analytical infinite elements which can include multiple wave components to model a underlying half-space are developed. Since these elements are expressed clearly and simply using Legendre polynomials of frequencies in frequency domain, these are very economical and efficient in computing the responses of strip foundations in frequency domain and are easily transformed for SSI analysis in time domain. To prove the behavior of the proposed two dimensional analytical infinite elements, vertical, horizontal, and rocking compliances of a rigid strip foundation in layered soils are analyzed and compared with those of Tzong ' Penzie $n^{(17)}$ and with those which calculated by numerical infinite elemen $t^{(1)}$ in frequency domain, and good agreements are noticed between them. As an application for a further study, a new scheme for SSI analysis in time domain are proposed and verified by comparing the displacement responses of the soil with a underlying rock due to a rectangular impulse loading with those of a soil modeled extended FE meshes.soil modeled extended FE meshes.
