  • A Galerkin's finite element model incorporating infinite elements for modeling of radiation condition at infinity has been developed, which is based on an extended mild-slope equation. To illustrate the validity and applicability of the present model, the example analyses were carried out for a resonance problem in the rectangular harbor of Ippen and Goda (1963) and for wave transformations over circular shoals of Sharp (1968) and Chandrasekera and Cheung (1997). Comparisons with the results obtained by hydraulic experiments and hybrid element method showed that the present model gives very good results in spite of the rapidly varying topography. Numerical experiments were also performed for wave transformations over a circular concave well which may be an alternative to conventional wave barriers.

  • This is the first of two companion papers which suggests the algorithm of the combined Finite Element Method and Infinite Element Method for the analysis of the axi-symmetric acoustic transducer in the open boundary. Using the algorithm, the numerical analysis for the transducer radiation impedance, directivity, and coupling effect between transducer elements are also conducted. In the second paper, the wideband array transducer is designed and its acoustic characteristics are examined on the basis of the results of the first paper.

In addition, the result of the designed transducer acoustic characteristics by the combined Finite Element Method and Hybrid Type Infinite Element Method, is found to better than that by the equivalent circuit model method. Therefore, the technique presented in this paper could be applied in the design and the acoustic characteristics analysis of the wideband array transducer.

  • Numerical stability analysis of an unsaturated infinite slope under rainfall-induced infiltration conditions was performed using generalized effective stress to unify both saturated and unsaturated conditions The soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) of sand with a relative density of 75% was initially measured for both drying and wetting processes. The hydraulic conductivity function (HCF) and suction stress characteristic curve (SSCC) were subsequently estimated. Under the rainfall-induced infiltration conditions, transient seepage analysis of an unsaturated infinite slope was performed using the finite element analysis program, SEEP/W. Based on these results, the stability of an unsaturated infinite slope under rainfall-induced infiltration conditions was examined in relation to suction stress. According to the results, the negative pore-water pressure and water content within the slope soil changed over time due to the infiltration. In addition, the variation of the negative pore-water pressure and water content led to a variation in suction stress and a subsequent change in the slope's factor of safety during the rainfall period.

  • Experimental and numerical results concerning the flat punch indentation to semi-infinite body with partially constrained free surface are presented The distributions of slip line directions are predicted by Moire fringe analysis using Vinckier's method. A mumerical study is made of the same problem by finite element method and the results are compared with the experimental results. It is shown that the contour feature of possible slip line field is similar to that of well-known Prandtl indentation sloution.

  • Direct calculation algorithm for the elements of A matrix is suggested for a single machine connected to the infinite bus. Excitation system and power system stabilizer are included. When A matrix is partitioned into seven submatrices, we can identify the location of non-zero elements and formula for each element. No matrix inversion and multiplication are necessary.

  • This paper compared the seakeeping quality of U, V type ships in infinite depth by using the finite element method. From the calculated results, it is found that heaving and pitching motions of V type are comparatively better than those of U type ship in the water of infinite depth and the reversed phenomenon occures in the water of finite depth. And the seakeeping quality of U type is better than V type ship in larger ranges than the nondimensional wave number 2.0.

  • To analyze an infinite slope that is reinforced with stabilizing piles, the forces on the stabilizing pile were estimated by the theory of plastic deformation and the theory of plastic flow and the effects of diverse factors on the factor of safety of an infinite slope were investigated. According to the results of the analyses, the factor of the safety of the slope reinforced with stabilized piles were increased tremendously and the factor of safety decreased as the center to center distance of the stabilizing pile increased. The effect of the existence of seepage of the infinite slope with stabilizing piles on the factor of safety appears to be insignificant. Considering the formulated factor of safety of an infinite slope with stabilizing piles, the width and length of the element of the infinite slope and force on the stabilizing pile influence the factor of safety of the infinite slope with a stabilizing pile including the soil strength parameter, inclination of the slope and depth of the slope, which are important for calculating the factor of safety of a non-reinforced infinite slope. The factor of safety of an infinite slope with stabilizing piles derived from the theory of plastic deformation were increased significantly with the internal friction angle of the soil, and the minimum and the maximum factor of safety under the conditions considered in this study were 13.7 and 65.6, respectively. As the diameter of the stabilizing pile increased, the forces on the stabilizing pile also increased but the factor of safety of the infinite slope with stabilizing piles decreased due to the effects of the width and the length of the element of the infinite slope. The factor of safety of the infinite slope with stabilizing piles derived from plastic flow were much larger than that of the non-reinforced infinite slope and the factor safety of the infinite slope with a stabilizing pile increased with increasing product of the flow velocity and plastic viscosity ( ) and the factor of safety of the infinite slope with stabilizing piles decreased with increasing center to center distance of the pile.

  • In this paper, the forced vibration problem of an Euler-Bernoulli beam that is joined with a semi-infinite field of a compressible fluid is considered as a boundary value problem (BVP). This BVP includes two partial differential equations (PDE) and some boundary conditions (BC), which are introduced comprehensively. After that, the closed-form solution of this fluid-structure interaction problem is obtained in the frequency domain. Some mathematical techniques are utilized, and two unknown functions of the BVP, including the beam displacement at each section and the fluid dynamic pressure at all points, are attained. These functions are expressed as an infinite series and evaluated quantitatively for a real example in the results section. In addition, finite element analysis is carried out for comparison.

  • An improvement is introduced to solve the plane problems of linear elasticity by reciprocal theorem for orthotropic materials. This method gives an integral equation with complex kernels which will be solved numerically. An artificial boundary is defined to eliminate the singularities and also an algorithm is introduced to calculate multi-valued complex functions which belonged to the kernels of the integral equation. The chosen sample problem is a plate, having a circular or elliptical hole, stretched by the forces parallel to one of the principal directions of the material. Results are compatible with the solutions given by Lekhnitskii for an infinite plane. Five different orthotropic materials are considered. Stress distributions have been calculated inside and on the boundary. There is no boundary layer effect. For comparison, some sample problems are also solved by finite element method and to check the accuracy of the presented method, two sample problems are also solved for infinite plate.
