  • Noise barriers are widely used to reduce the sound level propagating from highways, railways or factories to residential areas. The reduced noise level at a receiver point is then determined by the diffracted waves around the edge of the barrier as well as by the transmitted waves through the barrier. For proper usage, many studies either theoretical or experimental have been made with the objective of precisely predicting the acoustic field and improving the noise attenuating properties of barriers. In this study, a simple scattering model, a line acoustic source scattered by an infinite cylinder, is introduced to simply investigate the sound attenuation efficiency of a sound-resonating barrier. From this model study, it is observed that the sound-resonating barrier can be used as a good sound-shielding element especially for the pure-tone noise generated from the transformer. Large sound-attenuation is achieved by applying the sound-resonating barrier to the large transformers in a substation.

  • The paper deals with the numerical solution of the dynamic problem of masonry structures. Masonry is modelled as a non-linear elastic material with zero tensile strength and infinite compressive strength. Due to the non-linearity of the adopted constitutive equation, the equations of the motion must be integrated directly. In particular, we apply the Newmark or the Hilber-Hughes-Taylor methods implemented in code NOSA to perform the time integration of the system of ordinary differential equations obtained from discretising the structure into finite elements. Moreover, with the aim of evaluating the effectiveness of these two methods, some dynamic problems, whose explicit solutions are known, have been solved numerically. Comparisons between the exact solutions and the corresponding approximate solutions obtained via the Newmark and Hilber-Hughes-Taylor methods show that in the cases under consideration both numerical methods yield satisfactory results.

  • In this paper, we adopted a two-dimensional analytical electro-elastic model to predict the stress distributions of the piezoelectric actuator in 3D case. The actuator was embedded in an elastic host structure under electrical loadings. The problem is reduced to the solution of singular integral equations of the first kind. The interfacial stresses and the axial normal stress in both plane stress state and plane strain state were obtained to study the actuation effects being transferred from the actuator to the host. The stress distributions of the PZT actuator in different length and different thickness were analyzed to guarantee the generality. The validity of the present model has been demonstrated by application of specific examples and comparisons with the corresponding results obtained from the Finite Element Method.

  • In this work, transient thermo-piezo-elastic responses of an infinite functionally graded piezoelectric (FGPE) plate whose upper surface suffers time-dependent thermal shock are investigated in the context of different thermo-piezo-elastic theories. The thermal and mechanical properties of functionally graded piezoelectric plate under consideration are expressed as power functions of plate thickness variable. The solution of problem is obtained by solving the corresponding finite element governing equations in time domain directly. Transient thermo-piezo-elastic responses of the FGPE plate, including temperature, stress, displacement, electric intensity and electric potential are presented graphically and analyzed carefully to show multi-field coupling behaviors between them. In addition, the effects of functionally graded parameters on transient thermo-piezo-elastic responses are also investigated to provide a theoretical basis for the application of the FGPE materials.

  • We have studied the behavior of light in the intermediate regime between a single nanoslit and an infinite nanoslit array. We first calculated the optical characteristics of a small number of nanoslits using finite element numerical analysis. The phase variance of the proposed nanoslit model shows a gradual phase shift between a single nanoslit and ideal nanoslit array, which stabilizes before the total array length becomes ${\sim}0.5{\lambda}$. Next, we designed a transmission-enhanced Fresnel zone plate by applying the phase characteristics from the small-number nanoslit model. The virtual-point-source method suggests that the proposed Fresnel zone plate with phase-invariant nanoslits achieves 2.34x higher transmission efficiency than a conventional Fresnel zone plate. Our report describes the intermediate behaviors of a nanoslit array, which could also benefit subwavelength metallic structure research of metasurfaces.

  • When a rigid wedge is indented in to a semi-infinite block, the material is bulged up around the wedge that is generally called lip. The previous works in this filed considered the outer profile of the lip to be linear. But, present authors observed both experimentally and with the aid of finite element analysis that the profile of the lip is not always linear, and it depends on the angle of the wedge and friction parameters. So, in this work, attempts have been made to calculate hardness of indentation for different wedge angles and friction parameters. As hardness is intrinsic property of material, consideration of either linear or parabolic lip will not be affected much. A comparative study of hardness for linear and parabolic free surface profiles of the piled up material around the cone is analyzed in this work.

  • The rebar factory production process involves the repetitive bending of rebars. Therefore, the fatigue failure of the rebar bending machine needs to be considered. In this paper, fatigue analysis of the rebar machine was performed using the commercial software DAFUL, which is based on MFBD (Multi Flexible Body Dynamics). The rotating roller, fixing roller and rebar were modeled by the finite element method. The rebar bending process is simulated and the mechanical stresses on the rollers are calculated. Structural analysis of the rebar bending roller was performed using the maximum bending angle of $180^{\circ}$ and maximum processing rebar diameter of ${\Phi}19mm$. Then, for fatigue analysis, the S-N curve of STD-11 was. The fatigue life of rollers is estimated by modified Goodman diagram. The fatigue life range of the rotating roller is $2.99961{\times}10^5{\sim}1{\times}10^8$ while that of the fixed roller is $2.53142{\times}10^5{\sim}1{\times}10^8$. STD-11 has an infinite life cycle after $1{\times}10^8$. Therefore, the rollers of the rebar bending machine may be expected to suffer fatigue failure. Thus, we performed a parameter study of fatigue life according to various axial radii of the fixed roller and rotating roller, and redesign of the rebar bending machine. Consequently, the axial radius of the fixed roller and rotating roller was found to be 35~37.5mm and 30~35mm, respectively, and an infinite life cycle was confirmed at these.

  • This paper presents a method of seismic analysis for a cylindrical liquid storage structure considering the effects of the interior fluid and exterior soil medium in the frequency domain. The horizontal and rocking motions of the structure are included in this study. The fluid motion is expressed in terms of analytical velocity potential functions, which can be obtained by solving the boundary value problem including the deformed configuration of the structure as well as the sloshing behavior of the fluid. The effect of the fluid is included in the equation of motion as the impulsive added mass and the frequency-dependent convective added mass along the nodes on the wetted boundary of the structure. The structure and the near-field soil medium are represented using the axisymmetric finite elements, while the far-field soil is modeled using dynamic infinite elements. The present method can be applied to the structure embedded in ground as well as on ground, since it models both the soil medium and the structure directly. For the purpose of verification, earthquake response analyses are performed on several cases of liquid tanks on a rigid ground and on a homogeneous elastic half-space. Comparison of the present results with those by other methods shows good agreement. Finally, an application example of a reinforced concrete tank on a horizontally layered soil with a rigid bedrock is presented to demonstrate the importance of the soil-structure interaction effects in the seismic analysis for large liquid storage tanks.

  • The foundation of a tall building frame resting on settable soil mass undergoes differential settlements which alter the forces in the structural members significantly. For tall buildings it is essential to consider seismic forces in analysis. The building frame, foundation and soil mass are considered to act as single integral compatible structural unit. The stress-strain characteristics of the supporting soil play a vital role in the interaction analysis. The resulting differential settlements of the soil mass are responsible for the redistribution of forces in the superstructure. In the present work, the nonlinear interaction analysis of a two-bay ten-storey plane building frame- layered soil system under seismic loading has been carried out using the coupled finite-infinite elements. The frame has been considered to act in linear elastic manner while the soil mass to act as nonlinear elastic manner. The subsoil in reality exists in layered formation and consists of various soil layers having different properties. Each individual soil layer in reality can be considered to behave in nonlinear manner. The nonlinear layered system as a whole will undergo differential settlements. Thus, it becomes essential to study the structural behaviour of a structure resting on such nonlinear composite layered soil system. The nonlinear constitutive hyperbolic soil model available in the literature is adopted to model the nonlinear behaviour of the soil mass. The structural behaviour of the interaction system is investigated as the shear forces and bending moments in superstructure get significantly altered due to differential settlements of the soil mass.
