Survey of Slaughtered Chicken Leucocytozoon Infection Rate in Pusan, Gyeongnam Area (부산, 경남지방 도계육에 대한 Leucocytozoon 감염율 조사)

  • During 9 months (March-November, 1989), observation of Leucocytozoon infection rate to blood and parenchymatous viscera (spleen, liver, heart) in Pusan, Gyeongnam (Kimhae, Yangsan) districts slaughtered chicken and the results obtained were as follow : 1. Among the blood smear sample of 213 heads of the chicken, 43 heads (20.2%) were infected with Leucocytozoon 2nd stage gametocyte and 4 heads (1.9%) were mixed infected with Leucocytozoon 5th stage gametocyte. 2. In histopathological detection of schizont in tissues section of spleen, liver and heart, there were 16.7% in spleen, 5.6% in liver and 9.1% in heart, mean detection rate were 10.6%. Spleen had the highest detection rate of schizont. 3. In seasonal-related Infection rate, summer was higher than spring.

  • Recently interest in infection control is increasing in hospitalsnfection control has become more important in the overall health care practiceental hospital also requires thorough infection control. There are various kinds of vectormedical clothing. Contaminated clothing of a hospital staff can be a vector of nosocomial infecton. actual case of nosocomial infecton caused by contaminated medical clothing, nursing students were measuring contamination levels of uniforms and pathogenic microorganism wdetected in front of the uniform and pocket. There is also a high risk of exposure to contamination in the dental hospital. We conducted a study to enhance awareness about infection and proper clothing management by comparing before and after contamination of clothing caused by aerosols produced during scaling. Subjects were scaling operators' uniforms in the department of dental hygiene, K University located in Daejeon. Before scaling, the uniform was sterilized by autoclavecaling was performed times in the same place (an average of 60 minutes per person, a total of 180 minutes). ive parts of the uniform (sleeves, chest, belly, thigh, edge of pants) contracted Rodak-plate for 15 seconds. After incubating the contacted Rodak-plate at 37℃ incubator, contamination levels by measuring the number of colonies. As a result, all parts increased number of colonies. ontamination order chestedge of pants thigh belly sleeves. Increase rate of colonies was also high in the order chest edge of pants thigh belly sleeves. This study showed seriousness of clothing contaminationcaused by aerol produced during scalingcontamination of clothing can be a path to nosocomial infecton. According to th study, infection control for clothing as well as dental instruments should be implemented and thorough infection control training needed for dental staff. In further researches, practical infection prevention supplementing clothing management method.

Resistance to the Fungal Pathogen Phytophthora infestans of Transgenic Potato Plants Harboring of Chitinase Gene (Chitinase 유전자 도입 형질전환 감자식물체의 역병저항성)

  • A fungal infection assay between normal and transgenic potato harboring chitinase gene in cultivar Belchip was investigated. In the first stage of experiment, seven transgenic lines having 12cm tall were tested for their resistance against potato late blight pathogen Phytophthora infestans by infection with the zoospores, artificially, Susceptibility to potato late blight infection could be classified into three types based on the rate. In terms of resistance to the disease, two lines were higher, two lines were more suppressive, and three lines were similar as compared with the control. In the following experiment, only 2 risistant lines and 1 suppressed line were used to confirm the resistance again. The results of both experiments were similar. Furthermore, two highly resistant transgenic lines grown in field exhibited a higher resistance than control under the conditions of natural ocurrence of the fungal disease.

Risk Factors for Recurrence of Gastric Cancer after Curative Resection in One University Hospital (한 대학병원 위암수술 환자의 재발에 영향을 주는 요인)

  • In order to investigate recurrence rate and risk factors for recurrence of gastric cancer after curative resection, we examined blood biochemical profile and clinicopathological features of 386 gastric cancer patients by using medical charts and data of hospital cancer registry from September 2010 to May 2011. Chi-square test and logistic regression analyses were performed to identify risk factors. The recurrence rate of all gastric cancer patients was 2.6%; The recurrence rate by gender was 3.45% in male and 0.89% in female, and that was 4 times higher in male than in female. On univariate logistic regression analyses, lymph node metastases(OR=8.793), Helicobactor pylori infecton(OR=6.495), abnormal total cholesterol(OR=14.333) were related to recurrence. On multivariate logistic regression analyses, lymph node metastases and H. pylori infection were very important risk factors for recurrence of gastric cancer. In conclusion, lymph node metastases, H. pylori infection, and total cholesterol control were very important to prevent recurrence of gastric cancer, and it needs to monitor blood biochemical (C-reactive protein, carcinoembryonic antigen, etc) for the early detection of gastric cancer recurrence.

Characteristics of Pinewood Nematode Trapping by Nematophagous Arthrobotrys spp. (선충포획성 Arthrobotrys속균에 의한 소나무재선충 포획 특성)

  • Pinewood nematode (PWN) trapping by nematophagous fungi, Arthrobotrys conoides, A. dactyloides and A. oligospora and the fungal growth were characterized. The three Arthrobotrys species each was inoculated into the PWN cultured on Botrytis cinera fungal colony on potato dextrose agar (PDA). The effects of temperature, pH, PWN inoculation density and nutrients on the growth of the three Arthrobotrys spp were measured. A. conoides grew fast, 13.9 mm/day while A. dactyloides grew slow, 3 mm/day. PDA medium was the best for the fungal growth at $25^{\circ}C$ and pH 4.5. The Arthrobotrys spp growth was stimulated by 500 nematodes inoculation but not by 1000 inoculation. A. dactyloides did not grow below pH 4.5 and at high PWN density. A. conoides and A oligospora formed trapping organs with thick constricting hyphal network only when PWN present, while A. dactyloides formed the organ with circular hyphae constitutively. A. conoides formed trapping organs faster than A. oligospora did. The nematode trapping hyphae of the fungi penetrated into PNW inside to form many tiny infection bulbs and to digest the nematode. However, A. dactyloides formed a few trapping organs but no trapping was observed. Infection rate of PWN was 95% by A. conoides, 80% by A. oligospora and 92% by the combination inoculation of A. conoides and A. oligospora. In contrast A. dactyloides increased PWN density without infecton. There was no interaction effect in any combination inoculation of the three Arthrobotrys spp. A. conoides enhanced PWN infection rate by rapid hyphal growth and early trapping, while A. oligospora did it by increasing hyphal density. In conclusion A. conoides is the most effective in both hyphal growth and infection, and thus these characteristics can be utilized as a biological control of PWN.
