  • Most of the medium-size ships are powered by large-bore, long-stroke, slow-speed and two-stroke diesel engines in order to improve the fuel efficiency. Such a propulsion plant develops low-frequency excitation forces/moments of significant magnitude. A RO/RO car/truck carrier is also one of the cases. In this paper, the rational methods for analysis of vertical and coupled horizontal-torsional vibrations are presented. Taking account of unusual characteristics of the hull form and structural systems, the emphasis is put on modelling methods based on beam analogy, calculation of system parameters such as added mass and its center, polar added-mass moment of inertia, shear coefficient of hull sections and coupling degree in antisymmetric modes, and modal analysis of forced vibrations.

  • A submerged body is sensitive to changes in the roll moment because of the small restoring moment and moment of inertia. Thus, a method for predicting the roll-related hydrodynamic coefficients is important. This paper describes a deduction method for the hydrodynamic coefficients based on the results of a coning motion test. A resistance test, static drift test, and coning motion test were performed to obtain the coefficients in the towing tank of Seoul National University. The sum of the hydrodynamic force, inertial force, gravity, and buoyancy was measured in the coning motion test. The hydrodynamic force was deduced by subtracting the inertial force, gravity, and buoyancy from the measured force. The hydrodynamic coefficients were deduced using the regression method.

  • In modern power systems, high penetration of distributed generators (DGs) results in high stress on system stability. Apart from the intermittent nature of DGs, most DGs do not contribute inertia or damping to systems. As a result, a new control method named virtual synchronous machine (VSM) was proposed, which brought new characteristics to inverters such as synchronous machines (SMs). In addition, different active power droop controls for VSMs are being proposed in literatures. However, they are quite different in terms of their dynamic characteristics despite of the similar control laws. In this paper, mathematical models of a VSM adopting different active power droop controls are built and analyzed. The dynamic performance of the VSM output active power and virtual rotor angular frequency are presented for different models. The influences of the damping factor and droop coefficient on the VSM dynamic behaviors are also investigated in detail. Finally, the theoretical analysis is verified by simulations and experimental results.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the usefulness of single-structured printed circuit board (PCB) modeling by using numerical analysis to model the PCB structure applied to a package for semiconductor purposes and applying modeling assuming a single structure. PCBs with circuit layer of 3rd and 4th were used for analysis. In addition, measurements were made on actual products to obtain material characteristics of a single structure PCB. The analysis results showed that if the PCB was modeled in a single structure compared to a multi-layered structure, the warpage analysis results resulting from modeling the PCB structure would increase and there would be a significant difference. In addition, as the circuit layer of the PCB increased, the mechanical properties of the PCB, the elastic coefficient and inertia moment of the PCB increased, decreasing the package's warpage.

  • The construction of a submerged breakwater has become increasing due to their multiple effects on the coastal zone. Recently, marker rocks have been installed on the submerged breakwater to indicate its position to the vessels instead of buoy systems, since a buoy is not only improper for the ocean view, but also its mooring system may be damaged by the impulsive wave force caused by wave breaking on the breakwater. The accurate estimation of wave forces on such rocks is deemed necessary for their stability design. In this study, the characteristics of irregular wave forces acting on a marker rock, which was installed on a submerged breakwater, was investigated on the basis of laboratory experiments. It was revealed that the dimensionless highest one-third wave force tends to decrease with increasing the installation distance of a marker rock from the leading crown edge of a submerged breakwater. Also, the drag and inertia coefficients for irregular wave forces, which were obtained using the Morison equation, were investigated in relation to K.C. number.

  • This study proposes the characteristics of the pressure drop in a compressible fluid through porous media for application to a porous injector in a liquid rocket engine in order to improve the uniformity of the drop size distribution and the mixing performance of shear coaxial injectors. The fluid through the porous media is a Non-Darcy flow that shows a Nonlinear relation between the pressure drop and the velocity at high speed and high mass flow rate. The pressure drop of the Non-Darcy flow can be derived using the Forchheimer equation that includes the losses of viscous and inertia resistance. The permeability and Ergun coefficient represented as a function of the pressure drop and pore size can be applied to the porous injector, where the fluid through the porous media is compressible. A generalized correlation between the pressure drop in relation to the pore size was derived.

  • The present Study dealt with the earthquake-resistant design of cantilever retaining walls supporting cohesionless soils. With design examples of three different types of cantilever retaining walls, the factors of safety against sliding were computed at various values of horizontal acceleration coefficient and compared with each other. The horizontal inertia effect due to the weights of concrete wall itself and a portion of backfill was taken into account in the analyses, and also Mononobe-Okabe pseudo-static solution method was modified to deal with various states different from limiting equilibrium state. From the analyses of safety against sliding, it was found that a cantilever retaining wall with sloped base was the most efficient type in earthquake resistant design. It was also found that by sloping the base, the width of the base slab could be reduced, resulting in the least volume of concrete, excavation and backfill as compared to the other types of walls. In the case of a cantilever retaining wall with sloped feel, the efficiency similar to that of a wall with sloped base could be expected under static loading as well as at relatively low level of earthquake loading. However, this efficiency became vanished with the increase of horizontal acceleration coefficient, since the rate of reduction in developed earth pressures on the heel became smaller. In addition, the design charts with different soil friction angles as well as with different earthquake resistant design criteria of safety factor against sliding were presented for the design of cantilever retaining walls sith sloped base.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the heritabilities, phenotypic correlation, genetic correlation and path-coefficients for desirable characters on the lodging related traits. Characters, that had high relation degree with field lodging degree, were rice-straw length, Wl /P, W/I, Wl /d, L, Wl / A, W/l, P, W $s^2$/ $l^4$ etc. Breaking strength appear negative correlation having an intention to field lodging. The second inertia moment of culm diameter trunk (branch), cross section area, rice-straw thickness and trunk cross section didn't appear negative coefficient with field lodging. It is considered that rice-straw length, leaf dry weight and lodging index, because of high heritability, become selection index of characters for breeding. In direct, indirect effect, and right rice-straw wall thickness appear largest( $P_{7y}$=0.6904), the next is the order of leaf dry weight( $P_{3y}$=0.2848), root dry weight ( $P_{1y}$=0.2658), culm diameter ( $P_{6y}$=-0.2280), and negative relation appear the order of rice-straw length ( $P_{5y}$=-0.9640) and stem dry weight( $P_{2y}$=-0.7072), therefore, the smaller culm length and stem dry weight, the stronger to lodging. to lodging.

  • Agricultural drought is triggered by a depletion of moisture content in the soil, which hinders photosynthesis and thus increases carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations in the atmosphere. The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between soil moisture (SM) and vegetation activity toward quantifying CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. To this end, the MODerate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS), an optical multispectral sensor, was used to evaluate two regions in South Korea for validation. Vegetation activity was analyzed through MOD13A1 vegetation indices products, and MODIS gross primary productivity (GPP) product was used to calculate the CO2 flux based on its relationship with respiration. In the case of SM, it was calculated through the method of applying apparent thermal inertia (ATI) in combination with land surface temperature and albedo. To validate the SM and CO2 flux, flux tower data was used which are the observed measurement values for the extreme drought period of 2014 and 2015 in South Korea. These two variables were analyzed for temporal variation on flux tower data as daily time scale, and the relationship with vegetation index (VI) was synthesized and analyzed on a monthly scale. The highest correlation between SM and VI (correlation coefficient (r) = 0.82) was observed at a time lag of one month, and that between VI and CO2 (r = 0.81) at half month. This regional study suggests a potential capability of MODIS-based SM, VI, and CO2 flux, which can be applied to an assessment of the global view of the agricultural drought by using available satellite remote sensing products.
