An improved method for evaluating effective buckling length of semi-rigid frame with inelastic behavior is newly proposed. Also, generalized exact tangential stiffness matrix with rotationally semi-rigid connections is adopted in previous studies. Therefore, the system buckling load of structure with inelastic behaviors can be exactly obtained by only one element per one straight member for inelastic problems. And the linearized elastic stiffness matrix and the geometric stiffness matrix of semi-rigid frame are utilized by taking into account 4th terms of taylor series from the exact tangent stiffness matrix. On the other hands, two inelastic analysis programs(M1, M2) are newly formulated. Where, M1 based on exact tangent stiffness matrix is programmed by iterative determinant search method and M2 is using linear algorithm with elastic and geometric matrices. Finally, in order to verify this present theory, various numerical examples are introduced and the effective buckling length of semi-rigid frames with inelastic materials are investigated.
The aim of this study is to investigate the inelastic buckling behavior of the beams under moment gradient using a line-type finite element method. The method is incorporated the non-uniform yielding of the cross-section caused by the presence of residual stress and accepted model of residual stress so called 'simplified' and 'polynomial' pattern is adopted in this study. The inelastic lateral-torsional buckling results obtained in this study is compared with the buckling results obtained from the design method based on the allowable stress method given in Korean Steel Designers Manual (KSDM 1995). This study have found that the design method in KSDM (1995) is conservative without and with intermediate bracing applied at the mid span of the beam, and there is some scope for improving the provisions of KSDM (1995)

The purpose of this study is to investigate the inelastic behavior of precast concrete copings for precast segmental PSC bridge columns and to provide the details and reference data. Twelve one-fourth-scale precast concrete copings were tested under quasistatic monotonic loading. In this study, the computer program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), was used. A joint element is modified to predict the inelastic behaviors of segmental joints. This study documents the testing of precast concrete copings for precast segmental PSC bridge columns and presents conclusions based on the experimental and analytical findings.
Multi-span steel-concrete composite (SCC) bridges are very sensitive to earthquake loading. Extensive damage may occur not only in the substructures (piers), which are expected to yield, but also in the other components (e.g., deck, abutments) involved in carrying the seismic loads. Current seismic codes allow the design of regular bridges by means of linear elastic analysis based on inelastic design spectra. In bridges with superstructure transverse motion restrained at the abutments, a dual load path behavior is observed. The sequential yielding of the piers can lead to a substantial change in the stiffness distribution. Thus, force distributions and displacement demand can significantly differ from linear elastic analysis predictions. The objectives of this study are assessing the influence of piers-deck stiffness ratio and of soil-structure interaction effects on the seismic behavior of continuous SCC bridges with dual load path, and evaluating the suitability of linear elastic analysis in predicting the actual seismic behavior of these bridges. Parametric analysis results are presented and discussed for a common bridge typology. The response dependence on the parameters is studied by nonlinear multi-record incremental dynamic analysis (IDA). Comparisons are made with linear time history analysis results. The results presented suggest that simplified linear elastic analysis based on inelastic design spectra could produce very inaccurate estimates of the structural behavior of SCC bridges with dual load path.
The flexural behavior of HSB I-girder with a non-slender web attributed to inelastic lateral-torsional buckling under uniform bending was investigated using nonlinear finite element analysis of ABAQUS. The girder was assumed to have a compact or noncompact web in order to prevent premature bend-buckling of the web. The unbraced length of the girder was selected so that inelastic lateral-torsional buckling governs the ultimate flexural strength. The compression flange was also assumed to be either compact or noncompact to prevent local buckling of the elastic flange. Both homogeneous sections fabricated from HSB600 or HSB800 steel and hybrid sections with HSB800 flanges and SM570-TMC web were considered. In the FE analysis, the flanges and web of I-girder were modeled as thin shell elements. Initial imperfections and residual stresses were imposed on the FE model. An elasto-plastic strain hardening material was assumed for steel. After establishing the validity of the present FE analysis by comparing FE results with test results in existing literature, the effects of initial imperfection and residual stress on the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling behavior were analyzed. Finite element analysis results for 96 sections demonstrated that the current inelastic strength equations for the compression flange in AASHTO LTFD can be applied to predict the inelastic lateral torsional buckling strength of homogeneous and hybrid HSB I-girders with a non-slender web.

In design of steel frames, it is generally believed that elastic system buckling analysis cannot predict real behaviors of structures, while inelastic system buckling analysis can give informative buckling behaviors of individual members considering inelastic material behavior. However, the use of Euler buckling equation with these system buckling analyses have the inherent problem that the methods evaluate unexpectedly large effective lengths of members having relatively small axial forces. This paper proposes a new method of obtaining elastic and inelastic effective lengths of all members in steel frames. Considering a fictitious axial force factor for each story of frames, the proposed method determines the effective lengths using the inelastic stiffness reduction factor and the iterative eigenvalue analysis. In order to verify the validity of the proposed method, the effective lengths of example frames by the proposed method were compared to those of previously established methods. As a result, the proposed method gives reasonable effective lengths of all members in steel frames. The effect of inelastic material behavior on the effective lengths of members was also discussed.

Inelastic nonlinear behavior of a hyperbolic cooling tower under wind loading is studied using a finite element program developed on a Cray Y-MP. Convergence studies for the elastic and inelastic analyses are performed using three mesh models. It is shown that the mesh convergence plays an important role in accurately predicting the inelastic behavior of a cooling tower. Even though the cooling tower resists the applied forces through membrane stresses, it is found that the bending stresses play an important role in the failure and behavior of the cooling tower. The present analysis gives a shape factor of 1.48, which indicates a significant redistribution of meridional stresses. It is further evidenced by the distribution of meridional reinforcement yielding which reaches up to $30^{\circ}$ from the windward meridian. The present practice of using elastic analysis for calculating the design stresses appears to be at least safe and conservative. A more comprehensive study should lead to conclusions that would allow use of a higher-than-one shape factor, thus requiring less meridional reinforcement than the present design method does.
In the present study, the mechanical behavior of the spray-formed high speed steel was investigated employing the internal variable theory of inelastic deformation. Special attention was focused on the effect of the microstructure evolution during the hot working process, such as the distribution of carbides to provide a basic database for the production condition of high speed steels with excellent properties. The billets of high speed steel ASP30TM were fabricated by a spray forming, and the subsequently hot-rolled and heat-treated process to obtain uniformly distributed carbide structure. As noted the spray-formed high speed steel showed relatively coarser carbides than hot-rolled and heat-treated one with fine and uniformly distributed carbide structure. The step strain rate tests and high temperature tensile tests were carried out on both the spray-formed and the hot-rolled specimens, to elucidate their high temperature deformation behavior. The spray-formed high speed steel showed much higher flow stress and lower elongation than the hot-rolled and heat-treated steel. During the tensile test at $900^{\circ}C$, the interruption of the deformation for 100 seconds was conducted to reveal that the recovery was a main dynamic deformation mechanism of spray formed high speed steel. The internal variable theory of the inelastic deformation was used to analyze data from the step strain rate tests, revealing that the activation energies for hot deformation of as-spray-formed and hot-worked steels, which were 157.1 and 278.9 kJ/mol, and which were corresponding to the dislocation core and lattice diffusions of ${\gamma}-Fe$, respectively.
Many researches have been conducted to describe the elastic and inelastic behavior of H-shaped beams with web openings, and were generally concentrated on the uniaxial loading conditions. With previous research results, the formulae for the design of beams with web openings, considering local buckling, have been proposed by Darwin. Although the formulae are so simple and useful to apply to real situations, it needs more research on cyclic loading conditions. In this experimental study, a total of seven H-shaped beams with circular web openings under cyclic loading conditions were investigated. The dimension criteria were based on the formulae proposed by Darwin. The suitability of the existing design formulae, the effects of plastic hinges on beams with web openings, and the local bucking around the web openings to the beam strength under cyclic loading were also investigated through by the observations of the behavior of these beams with various dimensional openings.
The seismic responses of a building are affected by the connection characteristics that have effects on structural stiffness. In this study, push-over analysis and time history analysis were performed to estimate structural behavior of 2D eight-story unbraced steel structures with partially restrained composite connections using a nonlinear dynamic analysis program. Nonlinear $M-{\theta}$characteristics of connection and material inelastic characteristics of composite beam and steel column were considered. The idealization of composite semi-rigid connection as fully rigid connection yielded an increase in initial stiffness and ultimate strength in the push-over analysis. In time history analysis, the stiffness and hysteretic behavior of connections have effects on base-shear force, maximum story-drift and maximum moment in beams and columns. For seismic waves with PGA of 0.4 g, the structure with the semi-rigid composite connections shows the maximum story-drift with less than the life safety criteria by FEMA 273 and no inelastic behavior of beam and column, whereas in the structure with rigid connections, beams and columns have experienced inelastic behaviors.
