  • An alternative fuel is introduced as an environmentally friendly fuel in order to reduce the toxic emissions from conventional fossil fuels. In this study a bio-diesel fuel is produced and applied into the industrial diesel engine to understand the effect on the performance. The test conditions are loads of idle to maximum torque and engine speeds of 700 to 1900 rpm in bio-diesel blending percents of 0, 10, 20%. The results show that smoke and CO emissions are reduced while NOx in slightly increased, and the effects are rather clear in higher loads.

  • This research investigated variations of the engine performance and the exhaust emission characteristic of a direct injection diesel engine by fueling a commercial diesel fuel, which was blended with the di-ether group (butyl-ether: BE). The smoke emission reduced to 26% from the diesel engine with the blending fuel (diesel fuel 80 vol-% + BE 20 vol-%)at the full engine load of 2500 rpm compared to it with the diesel fuel only. The power, torque and brake specific energy consumption of the diesel engine showed very slight differences. The NOx emission from the diesel engine, however, with the blended fuel was higher than with the commercial diesel fuel only. By applying EGR method, as a counter plan of the NOx reduction, this research obtained reductions of the smoke and NOx emission at the same time from the diesel engine with the BE blended diesel fuel.

  • Biodiesel (BD) can be effectively used as an alternative fuel in diesel engines. However, BD may affect the performance and exhaust emissions in diesel engines because it has different physical and chemical properties from diesel fuel such as viscosity, compressibility and so on. To investigate the effect of injection timing on the characteristics of engine performance and exhaust emissions with BD in an indirect injection diesel engine, BD derived from soybean oil was applied in this study. The engine was operated at six different injection timings from TDC to BTDC $12^{\circ}CA$ and five loads at various engine speeds. Below BD 30, there's similar trend compared with diesel fuel. But, the best injection timing was $4{\sim}6^{\circ}CA$ retarded compare with diesel fuel using BD 30. When the fuel injection timing was retarded, better results were showed, which may confirm by advantages of BD.

  • A CRDI diesel engine used to commercial vehicle was fueled with diesel fuel and 20% biodiesel blended fuel (BDF 20%) and tested at the Seoul-10 mode for 150 hours. Engine dynamometer testing was completed at regularly scheduled intervals to monitor the engine performance and exhaust emissions. To check the engine parts (valve, injector), the engine was inspected after 150 hours running test. It was concluded that there was no unusual deterioration of the engine, or the changes in engine power (below 1.9%), smoke (below 4.1%), NOx (below 3.7%) and durability characteristics in spite of operation of 150 hours run with BDF 20%. The difference of kinetic viscosity for engine oil (before and after durability testing) was below 0.19% at $100^{\circ}C$.

  • Our environment is faced with serious problems related to the air pollution from diesel engines in these days. In particular, the exhaust emissions of agricultural diesel engines are recognized main cause which influenced environment strongly. In this study, the potential possibility of biodiesel fuel was investigated as an alternative fuel for a naturally aspirated agricultural D.I. diesel engine. The smoke emission of biodiesel fuel was reduced remarkably in comparison with diesel fuel, that is, it was reduced approximately 50% at 2500 rpm, full load. But, power, torque and brake specific energy consumption didn't have large differences. But, NOx emission of biodiesel fuel was increased compared with commercial diesel fuel. Also, the effects of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) on the characteristics of NOx emission has been investigated. It was found that simultaneous reduction of smoke and NOx was achieved with biodiesel fuel (20vol-%) and cooled EGR method($5{\sim}15%$) in an agricultural D.I. diesel engine.

  • The smoke emission of diesel engines is being recognized as one of the major source of the air pollution problems. This study investigates the potential of esterified rice bran oil to reduce smoke emission as an alternative fuel for diesel engines. Because the esterified rice bran oil has approximately a 10.5% oxygen content, the combustion of the diesel engine improved and exhaust smoke decreased. Gas chromatography was used to analyze not only the total amount of hydrocarbon but also the amount of hydrocarbon components from $C_1$ to $C_6$ in the exhaust gas to determine an exact source responsible for the remarkable reduction in the smoke emission. The number of individual hydrocarbon($C_1{\sim}C_6$) as well as the total amount of hydrocarbon of esterified rice bran oil reduced significantly compared to that of hydrocarbon of diesel fuel.

  • To improve efficiency of diesel engine which requests high output recently and is used all kinds of industrial areas, this thesis experimented dynamic characteristics and exhaust gas characteristics of diesel engine installed by supercharger of correspondent output 200HP and natural inhalation diesel engine through the dynamometer and exhaust gas analyzer in same condition. As the result of experiment with natural inhalation diesel engine and diesel engine installed by supercharger, there were a few differences of output, but dynamic characteristics at high speed showed increased output and efficiency of the engine installed by supercharger. On the contrary, in exhaust gas characteristics, the model installed by supercharger showed increased exhaust gas such as $NO_X$, $O_2$, etc, but added value of exhaust gas is low if considering $CO_2$ reduction and efficiency of dynamic characteristic's increase. Based on the results, diesel engine installed by supercharger is expected to show higher economic feasibility than natural inhalation diesel than natural inhalation engine from an angle of efficiency. • The local instantaneous flame temperature and soot concentration in a D. I. diesel engine were measured using a two-color method. The proposed method based on the continuous spectra! radiation from the soot particles in the flame is applicable to industrial Diesel engines without major modifications of their main characteristics because of simplicity and relative ease of application. Measurements were performed at two locations inside the combustion chamber of a D. I. diesel engine. Effects of different engine speeds and loads, fuel injection timings, combustion chamber shapes on flame temperature and KL factor, which is qualitatively proportional to soot concentrations, were examined. Flame temperature change were observed with increasing engine speed and load. The higher the flame temperature is, the lower the KL factor is.
