Changes in Antioxidant Activity and Total Phenolic Content of Water Spinach (Ipomoea aquatic Forsk.) under In Vitro Biomimicking System

  • The purpose of current study was to examine bioaccessibility of antioxidant activity and total phenolic content in each part of water spinach (Ipomoea aquatic Forsk.). In vitro biomimicking system simulated human digestive fluid was employed in order to measure bioavailable anti-oxidative effect and phenolic content. Antioxidant activity and total phenolic content was measured by using the DPPH method and the Folin-Ciocalteu assay, respectively. Stem of water spinach had a higher DPPH free radical scavenging effect (5.43 mg/mL for $IC_{50}$) than leaf (5.95 mg/mL for $IC_{50}$), while leaf had a greater level of total phenolic content (287.45 ${\mu}g$ GAE/mL) than stem (216.45 ${\mu}g$ GAE/mL). Bioaccessible antioxidant capacity and digestive stability of total phenolic content showed a similar pattern to what found in raw materials. Our result also indicated that total phenolic content was not found to be a major marker for prediction of antioxidant activity. It is plausible that other constituents such as vitamin E and C in water spinach could be contributors for antioxidant activities.

The Influence of YouTube "Mukbang" Content Characteristics on Viewers' Satisfaction and Word-of-Mouth Intentions

  • Purpose: This study examines the impact of YouTube mukbang content characteristics on viewer satisfaction and word-of-mouth behavior. Drawing from theories in media psychology, consumer behavior, and communication studies, we investigate five key content characteristics: credibility, entertainment value, informativeness, visual appeal, and auditory quality. Research design, data and methodology: Using structural equation modeling with data from 206 mukbang viewers, we test hypothesized relationships between these characteristics, viewer satisfaction, and word-of-mouth behavior. Results: Research reveal that credibility and informativeness significantly and positively influence viewer satisfaction, while entertainment value, visual appeal, and auditory quality show no significant effect. Viewer satisfaction positively impacts word-of-mouth behavior. These findings challenge conventional assumptions about video content consumption and highlight the unique nature of mukbang viewing. Conclusions: The study contributes to digital content consumption literature by providing empirical evidence of factors influencing viewer engagement in the mukbang context. It offers practical insights for content creators, marketers, and platform developers, emphasizing the importance of informative and credible content in driving viewer satisfaction and promoting positive word-of-mouth. By extending established media theories to this emerging form of digital entertainment, our research paves the way for future studies. The study's limitations, including its cross-sectional nature and specific cultural context, suggest directions for future research.

Heavy Metals in Soils of the Urban Area (도시 토사중 중금속 함량)

  • In order to evaluate the degree of air pollution, soils from 125 and 60points of main streets of Seoul and Daejeon, respectively, were sampled and analyzed for the contents of lead, copper, iron and zinc by nitric acid($HNO_3$) extraction followed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry during June and September, 1990. The Pb contents of Seoul and Daejeon were 350.2$\mu$g/g and 175.9$\mu$g/g, respectively, which were 14.5times and 7.3times respectively higher than the control(24.0). In Seoul, the commercial area gave the highest value followed by resdential and industrial areas in the decreasing order, while the order in Daejeon was Industrial, commercial and residential areas. The Cu contents in Seoul and Daejeon were very similar(236.6 and 234.6, respectively) each other, and about 11times higher than the control(20.9). The concentration was highest in industrial, followed by commercial and the lowest in residential areas in Seoul, while the order in Daejeon was industrial, residential and commercial areas. The Fe contents were 25716.5 in Seoul and 22838.6 in Daejeon, both being similar to the control value(22537.0). The value was highest in industrial and next in commercial areas and the lowest in residential area both in Seoul and Daejeon. The Zn contents in Seoul and Daejeon were 728.2 and 404.0, respectively, wihch were 6.3 and 3.6times higher than the control(113.3). The value was highest in commercial and next in industrial areas and the lowest in residental area in Seoul, while the order was industrial, residential and commercial areas in Daejeon. The heavy metal content was higher in the soil of main streets than that of minor streets in Seoul. The content of lead in Seoul was higher in the streets of Chongro-ku(525.9) and Chung-ku(684.8), the central area of the city which had a heavy traffic, than those in Nowon-ku(320.3) and Kwanak-ku(312.6) which had relatively less traffic crowd. The similar pattern was observed in the content of zinc; it was higher in Chongro-ku(1305.0) and Chung-ku(1335.4) than in Nowon-ku(489.1) and Kwanak-ku(569.8). In Daejeon, the contents of lead and zinc were decreasing as the distance from Daejeon Railroad Station increased : they were respectively 157.8 and 447.7 within 2km from the station, 157.6 and 235.7 with in 2-4km, and 63.5 and 156.2 within 4-6km and 58.7 and 142.2 within 6-8km. In summary, the contents of lead, copper and zinc were generally higher in the central area of the city, areas of heavy traffic and areas of industry and commerce.

  • Where the industrial waste is increasing in number of kind and in quantities by the industrialization and population increases, the pollution problem is not only national but grobal question of the day. This paper is trying to invite attentions by the people who are working in both sector-natural sciences and industries in reviewing limited reports and materials. 1. By the chemical evaluation of over 20 industrial waste produced in Korea, potential wastes for commercial fertilizer would be wastes from alcohol fermantation, beer brewery, leather processing, synthetic fiber, and coffee grounds. 2. The composition of city waste is differ from other countries and sludge cake from human feces processing is promising one in the organic matter and phosphate content particularly. However, the content of heavy matals, specific order, and availability of phosphate are the bottle-neck for the development. 3. There is one commercial fertilizer from industrial waste in the market. It is very reasonable in the content of nitrogen and organic matter, and its formulation and responeses on crops. 4. Discussions were also given on the general problems in processing and marketing of fertilizers from industrial waste, however, scientists and industrial owners have to pay more attention on the development of fertilizers from tire industrial wastes because of vital environmental protection view-point.

  • This paper deals with the analysis of 6T SRAM cell stability for Hi-speed processing Ternary Content Addressable Memory. The higher the operation frequency, the smaller CMOS technology required in the designed TCAM because the purpose of TCAM is high-speed data processing. Decrease of Supply voltage is one cause of unstable TCAM operation. Thus, We should design TCAM through analysis of SRAM cell stability. In this paper we propose methodology to characterize the Static Noise Margin of 6T SRAM. All simulations of the TCAM have been carried out in 180nm CMOS process technology.

An Empirical Study of Factors Influencing Intention to Use Smartphone Applications (스마트폰 애플리케이션 사용의도 결정 요인에 대한 실증 연구)

  • The market of smartphone applications grows rapidly. We studied to evaluate empirically how personality variables related to personal attitudes(innovativeness and affinity) and information quality(interaction, content, and contextual) can affect use intention and customer loyalty in smartphone applications. The results of the study are as follows: Innovativeness, content quality and contextual quality were found to have a positive effect on intentions to use smartphone applications. However affinity and interactivity were found to have a negative effect on use intention. And use intention was found to have negative effect on customer loyalty for smartphone applications.

Quality Characteristics of Sulgidduk with Yacon Powder (야콘 분말을 첨가한 설기떡의 품질 특성)

  • In this study, Sulgidduk samples were prepared with 0%, 3%, 5% and 7% yacon powder. Sulgidduk samples were then examined for quality characteristics such as moisture content, general components, color, texture profile analysis, sensory qualities, and sugar content, in order to determine the optimal ratio of yacon powder in the formulation. Regarding the general components of yacon Sulgidduk, the contents of crude protein and lipid decreased as the ratio of yacon powder increased. The L-value for color decreased, whereas a- and b-values increased. In the texture profile analysis, 7%-added yacon showed significantly lower hardness, whereas 7% yacon powder showed the highest values for cohesiveness, springiness, and chewiness. The contents of sucrose, fructose, and glucose in yacon Sulgidduk were found to be 3%, 5%, and 7% by LC, respectively. Sucrose showed a decreasing trend with increased yacon powder content, but fructose and glucose increased with increased amount of yacon powder. For sensory qualities, taste/flavor, texture, hardness, and overall acceptability were not significantly different among the 0%, 3%, and 5% yacon powder samples.

Hepatoprotective Activities of Rubus coreanus Depends on the Degree of Ripening

  • Rubus coreanus, commonly known as 'red raspberry' is used as a traditional oriental medicine in Korea for the management of diseases such as impotence, spermatorrhea and athsma, and for allergies, in combination with other herbal preparations, in many centuries. We undertook a comparison of the hepatoprotective effect of ethanol extracts of the unripe (UREx) and ripe (RREx) R. coreanus extract against acetaminophen (AAP) induced hepatotoxicity in rats. UREx reduced the elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), total bilirubin (TB), alkaline phosphatase (AP), lipid peroxide and nitric oxide content which had been increased by AAP administration. UREx also increased the cellular glutathione (GSH) content and induced the glutathione-S-transferase (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) content which had been decreased by AAP. RREx did not exhibit strong hepatoprotective effect or antioxidant activity under the same conditions. The experimental results show that the degree of the ripening of R. coreanus affects the hepatoprotective activity in the AAP-intoxicated rats. These findings of a protective mechanism are supportive evidence for the utility of unripened R. coreanus in traditional medicine for liver ailments.

Pigment Reduction to Improve Photosynthetic Productivity of Rhodobacter sphaeroides

  • Improving the light utilization efficiency of photosynthetic cells in photobioreactors (PBRs) is a major topic in algal biotechnology. Accordingly, in the current study we investigated the effect and suitability of photosynthetic pigment reduction for improving light utilization efficiency. The light-harvesting complex II (LH-II) genes of Rhodobacter sphaeroides were removed to construct a mutant strain with less pigment content. The mutant strain exhibited a slower growth rate than the wild-type under a low light intensity, while the mutant grew faster under a high light intensity. In addition, the specific absorption coefficient was lower in the mutant due to its reduced pigment content, thus it seemed that light penetrated deeper into its culture broth. However, the distance (light penetration depth) from the surface of the PBR to the compensation point did not increase, due to an increase in the compensation irradiance of the mutant strain. Experimental data showed that a reduced photosynthetic pigment content, which lessened the photoinhibition under high-intensity light, helped the volumetric productivity of photosynthetic microorganisms.

Effects of Mg Content on the Properties and Casting Characteristics of Al-2Zn-0.2Fe-xMg Alloys (Al-2Zn-0.2Fe-xMg 합금의 물성 및 주조특성에 미치는 Mg함량의 영향)

  • Aluminium-silicon based casting alloys have received an attention for high electrical and thermal conductivity applications, however relatively low conductivity of Al-Si alloys often limits the application. Efforts have been made to develop new high conductivity aluminium casting alloys containing no or less silicon. In this study Al-Zn-Fe based alloys were selected as the new alloys, and the effect of Mg additions on their properties and casting characteristics were investigated. As the magnesium content was increased, the tensile strength of Al-2Zn-0.2Fe based alloy was remarkably increased, while the electrical conductivity was deteriorated. It was observed that the fluidity of the alloys was generally inversely proportional to the Mg content but the hot cracking resistance was rather proportional to it. Cooling curve analyses were carried out to measure the actual solidification range and dendrite coherency temperature.
