Renewable energy has been of interests in the area of modern alternative fuels. Biogas is produced in waste landfill sites through anaerobic digestion processes, including hydrolysis, acidogenesis, organic acid fermentation (acetogenesis), and methane fermentation (methanogenesis). High contents of fine dust and moisture limited its utilization for direct combustion, town gas and vehicle fuel. Thus, this study proposed a new design for a cooling device using a centrifugal cyclone for simultaneous removal of fine dust and moisture as a pretreatment in the purification processes. A heat exchanger and an ID fan, which are installed inside and outside of the cyclone, in order to cool the humid gas below the freezing point and form a foggy mist. Such an atmosphere enhanced to capture fine dust as recirculating the cold mist flow. The water removal rate was 80.8% at a relative humidity of 95%, and the particle removal efficiency was 98.3% for $2.5{\mu}m$. Simultaneous removal efficiency was 70.8% and 99.6% for particle and moisture respectively.

Conventional methods, such as the clock time control method and temperature difference control method, for defrost control often encounter mal-defrost and a waste of energy. Therefore, a more efficient method is needed to control defrosting precisely. A photoelectric sensor unit consisting of an emitter and a collector was installed in the front of outdoor heat exchanger. Accurate defrost control was performed by monitoring and using the change in output voltage according to the presence of frost. In this study, experiments were performed to determine if the performance and characteristic curves obtained using the clock time control method can be reproduced using a photoelectric sensor under the heating and defrosting capacity test condition described at KS C 9306. The output voltage of the phototransistor (receiver) and heating capacity, power consumption, and surface temperature of the outdoor heat exchanger, were compared. The results showed that photoelectric sensors can be used as a defrost control method. On-off control timing of the clock time defrosting method was in good agreement with those predicted by the output voltage of the photoelectric sensor.

Ceramic foams are prepared as positive images corresponding to a plastic foam structure which exhibits high porosities (85-90%). This structure makes the ceramic foams attractive as a catalyst in a dry reforming process, because it could reduce a high pressure drop problem. This problem causes low mass and heat transfers in the process. Furthermore, the reactants would shortly contact to catalyst surface, thus low conversion could occur. Therefore, this research addressed the preparation of dry reforming catalysts using a sol-gel catalyst preparation via a polymeric sponge method. The specific objectives of this work are to investigate the effects of polymer foam structure (such as porosity, pore sizes, and cell characteristics) on a catalyst performance and to observe the influences of catalyst preparation parameters to yield a replica of the original structure of polymeric foam. To accomplish these objectives industrial waste foams, polyurethane (PU) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) foams, were used as a polymeric template. Results indicated that the porosity of the polyurethane and polyvinyl alcohol foams were about 99% and 97%. Their average cell sizes were approximate 200 and 50 micrometres, respectively. The cell characteristics of polymer foams exhibited the character of a high permeability material that can be able to dip with ceramic slurry, which was synthesized with various viscosities, during a catalyst preparation step. Next, morphology of ceramic foams was explored using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and catalyst properties, such as; temperature profile of catalyst reduction, metal dispersion, and surface area, were also characterized by $H_2-TPR$ and $H_2-TPD$ techniques, and BET, respectively. From the results, it was found that metal-particle dispersion was relatively high about 5.89%, whereas the surface area of ceramic foam catalysts was $64.52m^2/g$. Finally, the catalytic behaviour toward hydrogen production through the dry reforming of methane using a fixed-bed reactor was evaluated under certain operating conditions. The approaches from this research provide a direction for further improvement of marketable environmental friendly catalyst production.
Since late of 2000, KIER has developed a novel pyrolysis process for production of fuel oils from polymer wastes. It could have been possible due to large-scale funding of the Resource Recycling R&D Center. The target was to develop an uncatalyzed, continuous and automatic process producing oils that can be used as a fuel for small-scale industrial boilers. The process development has proceeded in three stages bench-scale unit, pilot plant and demonstration plant. As a result, the demonstration plant having capacity of 3,000 tons/year has been constructed and is currently under test operation for optimization of operation conditions. The process consisted of four parts ; feeding system, cracking reactor, refining system and others. Raw materials were pretreated via shredding and classifying to remove minerals, water, etc. There were 3 kind of products, oils(80%), gas(15%), carbonic residue(5%). The main products i.e. oils were gasoline and diesel. The calorific value of gas has been found to be about 18,000kcal/$m^3$ which is similar to petroleum gas and shows that it could be used as a process fuel. Key technologies adopted in the process are 1) Recirculation of feed for rapid melting and enhancement of fluidity for automatic control of system, 2) Tubular reactor specially-designed for heavy heat flux and prevention of coking, 3)Recirculation of heavy fraction for prevention of wax formation, and 4) continuous removal & re-reaction of sludge for high yield of main product (oil) and minimization of residue. The advantages of the process are full automation, continuous operation, no requirement of catalyst, minimization of coking and sludge problems, maximizing the product(fuel oil) yield and purity, low initial investment and operation costs and environment- friendly process. In this presentation, background of pyrolysis technology development, the details of KIER pyrolysis process flow, key technologies and the performances of the process will be discussed in detail.

The city is developing into a smart city. Smart villages and smart farms are developing in rural areas. Architectural technology needs synergy with smart cities, smart villages, and smart factories (intelligent factories) to help architectural experts understand smart farms and build facilities and equipment. Smart farms require design and construction technology with architectural structure and function. The purpose of this study was to investigate the current status and cases of smart farms in Korea and to investigate cases abroad. The conclusion is as follows. ① Smart farms are developing rapidly. The Korean government is expanding smart farms by utilizing ICT technology and infrastructure. ② 'Smart Farm Innovation Valley', which has been promoted since 2018, is a cutting-edge convergence cluster industrial complex that integrates production, education, and research functions such as start-ups and technological innovation. ③ In domestic cases, smart farms are operated in subway stations, buildings, supermarkets, and restaurants. ④ In the Japanese case, a dome-type smart farm was being operated. It utilized factory wastewater, waste heat, renewable energy, and used new materials. Otemachi Ranch raised livestock and provided a lounge on the 13th floor of the building. ⑤ In the cases of Korea and Japan, the smart farm technology is very similar. As stated earlier, since the food culture and agricultural technology of both countries are similar, we hope to promote the development of smart farms that can reduce concerns about future food by communicating and sharing mutual technologies.
Recently, since industrial waste and life waste leaped into a pollution source, the building material used now a days is striking the limit. The purpose of this paper is to investigate an application of recycled coal ash using non-sintering method in the construction field. Accordingly, compressive strength, elastic modulus and drying shrinkage were experimentally studied for hardened coal ash using the non-sintering method. Also, Lineweaver and Burk method were applied to the regression analysis of drying shrinkage for the proposal equation. Elastic modulus, compressive strength of material become the basis properties of structural design. And these properties by age for hardened coal ash are important because of change by pozzolan reaction. This hardened coal ash is weak for tensile stress like that of concrete. And drying shrinkage is very important factor to make huge tensile force in early age. In the results, although some differences were shown when comparing coal ash with mortar or concrete, the application as a building material turned out to be possible if further researches were carried out. And the shrinkage characteristic of hardened coal-ash reveals to be similar to that of moderate heat cement.

Natural silica sand was commonly used for sand casting of cast steel products, and chromites sand was used to suppress seizure defects due to the lack of thermal properties of silica sand. However there are disadvantages such as deterioration by repeated use, system sand mixing problem, difficulty separating and removing, increased during mold according to high density and to being waste containing chrome. Recently, industrial waste reduction and atmospheric environment improvement have been highlighted as important tasks in the casting industry. In order to solve the problems that occur when using foundry Sand and to improve the environment of casting factories, various artificial sands that can be applied instead of natural silica sand have been developed and introduced. Artificial sands can be classified into artificial sand manufactured by the electric arc atomization or gas flame atomization, artificial sand manufactured by the spray drying & sintering process, artificial sand manufactured by the sintering & crushing process and exhibit different physical properties depending on the type of raw-minerals and manufacturing method. In this study, comparative evaluation tests were conducted on the physical properties of various foundry sands, mold strength, physical durability, thermal durability, and casting test pieces. When comprehensively considering the actual amount of molding sand used according to density, the mold strength according to the shape of sand, the physical and thermal durability of foundry sand, and the heat resistance characteristics of foundry sand, 'Molten artificial sand A1' or 'Molten artificial sand B' is judged to be the most suitable spherical artificial sand for casting of heavy steel castings.
It is becoming increasingly important to make use of alternative energy source. because It is not able to rely on only fossil fuel for the recent increasing demand of energy consumption. With this situation, lots of studies for utilizing low grade energy such as industrial waste heat, solar energy, and geothermal energy have been conducted. The aim of this study is to predict the operation characteristics of working fluid by using performance analysis program (ThermoFlex) through the system analysis which is not mixing district return water but using ORC(Organic Rankine Cycle, hereinafter ORC) as a downstream cycle when accumulating district heating (hereinafter DH). In this study, We conducted the performance analysis for the case which has the district heating water temperature($120^{\circ}C$) and Flow rate of $163m^3/h$ (including District Heating return water flow), and examined several working fluid which is proper to this temperature. The case using R245fa (which is the best-case) showed 269.2kW power output, 6.37% efficiency. Additionally, Cut down on fuel was expected because of the boiler inlet temperature increase by being Formed $57.3{\sim}85^{\circ}C$ in a temperature of district heating return water, depending on a pressure change of a condenser in ORC system.

A huge amount of de-icing agent is sprayed during winter to promote traffic safety in cold regions, and the quantity of de-icing agent sprayed has increased each year. The main ingredients in commonly used de-icing agents are chlorides, such as calcium chloride($CaCl_2$) and sodium chloride(NaCl). While calcium chloride is mostly used in Korea and sodium chloride is usually used in the U.S. and Japan, all de-icing agents include chloride ions. The chlorides included in sprayed calcium chloride-based de-icing agents have severe adverse effects, including the corrosion of reinforcing steels through salt damage by infiltrating into road structures, reduced structural performance of pavement or damage to bridge structures, and surface scaling, in combination with freezing damage in winter, as well as water pollution. In addition, the deterioration of paved concrete road surface that occurs after the use of calcium chloride-based de-icing agent accelerates the development of visual problems with traffic structures. Therefore, the present study was performed to prepare an environment-friendly liquid de-icing agent through a reaction between waste organic acids and calcium-based by-products, which are industrial by-products, and to analyze the properties of the de-icing agent in order to evaluate its applicability to road facilities.

Various applications require dry air at low temperature, such automation equipment, semiconductor manufacturing, chemical production lines, and coating processes for the shipbuilding industry. Four evaporators for low temperature (below $0^{\circ}C$) were installed for a dehumidification system. Moist air is cooled sequentially over three evaporators. The first evaporator has an evaporation temperature of $13^{\circ}C$, that of the second evaporator is $5^{\circ}C$, and that of the third evaporator is maintained at $-1.3^{\circ}C$. In the fourth evaporator implantation thereby the moisture contained in the moisture air. A pressure regulator (CPCE 12) is used at this point and is defrosted when the vapor pressure is below a set value. The non-implantation moisture of the air is a heating system that uses the waste heat of a condenser with high temperature. It develops the cooling type's dehumidifier, which is important equipment that prevents the destruction of protein and measures the temperature and humidity at each interval by changing the front air velocity from 1.0 m/s to 4.0 m/s. The cooling capacity was also calculated. The greatest cooling capacity was 1.77 kcal/h for a front air velocity of 2.0 m/s
