Many firms are trying to optimize their production and distribution systems separately, but possible profit increase by this approach is limited. Nowadays, it is more important to analyze these two systems simultaneously for the integrated supply chain management. This paper is a computational study to investigate the effectiveness of integrating production and distribution scheduling. We are interested in a multi-plant, multi-retailer, multi-product and multi-period industrial problem where the objective in solving production and distribution scheduling problem is to maximize the total net profit. Computational results on test problems of various sizes using the heuristic we developed show a substantial advantage of the integrated scheduling approach over the decoupled scheduling process. Sensitivity analysis on the parameter values indicates that, under the right conditions, the effectiveness of integrating production and distribution functions can be extremely high.

The purpose of this study is to propose guidelines for introducing the Just-In-Time (JIT) production system to enhance the competitiveness of Korean manufacturing companies. This study employed an extensive survey on the use of the JIT production systems among different korean manufacturing companies to understand the current status of the JIT production system in use and to identify the benefits from implementing JIT production system. The survey has covered 170 manufacturing companies of different sizes from various sectors of Korean industries including electronics, automobiles, machineries, and textiles. In conclusion, our research results support that the JIT production system would contribute to increase the manufacturing performances of Korean manufacturing companies through lower inventory level and increased quality level.

The demand for facility used in producing multi-products is changed dynamically for discrete and finite time periods. The excess or the shortage for facility is occurred according to difference of the facility capacity size and demand for facility through given time periods. The shortage facility is met through the outsourcing production. The excess facility cost is considered for the periods that the facility capacity is greater than the demand for the facility, and the outsourcing production cost is considered for the periods that the demand for facility is greater than the facility capacity. This paper addresses to determine the facility capacity size, outsourcing production products and amount that minimizes the sum of the facility capacity cost, the excess facility cost and the outsourcing production cost. The characteristics of the optimal solution are analyzed, and an algorithm applying them is developed. A numerical example is shown to explain the problem.
This study deals with the improvement of production process on a flow production system with the consideration of six sigma. We analyze the production process and survey the important factors of improvement of productivity. Using a six sigma, we find strategic point and suggest a reformation of production process. We applied a simulation technique to simulate the production line proposed by the result of the Six sigma. With the result of the simulation, this study analyzes the propriety of production line and proposes the alternatives of new production process.

S plastic injection molding factory located at Namdong Industrial Complex in Incheon produces plastic parts for semiconductor, vacuum cleaners, office furniture, etc. It produces the parts to customers' order and delivers them directly to customers at due dates using the trucks of freight company. In recent years, it has been suffered from the excessive production cost, high lost sales rate, rigid response to customers' order, and high delivery cost, which affect negatively on its profit. This paper introduces a case study on the profit increase through a newly proposed production and distribution method which applies a make-to-stock and multi-visit delivery strategy at S plastic injection molding factory. The proposed method is evaluated by comparing with the current method with respect to sales profit using the historical data of customer demand. It is confirmed through the computational experiments that the proposed production and distribution method yields almost double increase in profit resulted from the increased production, reduced lost sales, reduced production cost, and reduced delivery cost.
Automobile market was grown up by 1.7% at the first half of 2012 comparison with 2011 in China and this growth trend will be continued for a while. Under this market environment the China automobile companies expand the production capacity and result in heightening the intense competition for companies. This paper deals with the more efficient production line and production logistics through SPS(Synchronized Production System) with construction of MES(Manufacturing Execution System) in H automobile company in China. In plastic painting line we can simultaneously prepare the production quantity and delivery time according to assembly production plan by introducing MES. We can reduce the excess production and result in extreme reduction of inventory.
This paper introduces a new multi-product multi-period multi-objective aggregate production planning problem. The proposed problem is modeled using multi-objective mixed-integer mathematical programming. Three objective functions, including minimizing total cost, maximizing customer services level, and maximizing the quality of end-product, are considered, simultaneously. Several constraints such as quantity of production, available time, work force levels, inventory levels, backordering levels, machine capacity, warehouse space and available budget are also considered. Some parameters of the proposed model are assumed to be qualitative and modeled using fuzzy sets. Then, a fuzzy goal programming approach is proposed to solve the model. The proposed approach is applied on a real-world industrial case study of a color and resin production company called Teiph-Saipa. The approach is coded using LINGO software. The efficacy and applicability of the proposed approach are illustrated in the case study. The results of proposed approach are compared with those of the existing experimental methods used in the company. The relative dominance of the proposed approach is revealed in comparison with the experimental method. Finally, a data dictionary, including the way of gathering data for running the model, is proposed in order to facilitate the re-implementation of the model for future development and case studies.

In real-time electricity price environment, the energy management system can provide the significant advantage to the residential, commercial and industrial customers since it can reduce the electricity charge by controlling the load operation effectively in response to time-varying price. However, the earlier studies for load management mainly focus on the residential and commercial customers except for the industrial customers because most of load operations in industrial sector are intimately related with production schedule. So, it is possible that the inappropriate control of loads in industrial sector causes huge economic loss. In this paper, therefore, we propose load control algorithm for factory energy management system(F-EMS) to achieve not only minimizing the electricity charges but also maintaining production efficiency by considering characteristics of load operation and production schedule. Considering characteristics of load operation and production schedule, the proposed load control algorithm can reflect the various characteristics of specific industrial customer and control their loads within the range that the production efficiency is maintained. Simulation results show that the proposed load control algorithm for F-EMS leads to significant reduction in the electricity charges and peak power in industrial sector.
This paper presents a linear programming formulation of the aggregate production planning problem for an optical instrument manufacturing company. Taking into account of the various requirements of the company, an L.P model is developed whose objective is to minimize the total cost of production during the planning horizon. The application results and its implications are well understood by the management and expected to be used as a guide line for future production planning.

Up-to-date market dynamics and intense competition have forced a production system to be more widely distributed and decentralized than ever, and the production system itself can be regarded as a collaborative network of autonomous production resources in which the responsibility of decision making is also decentralized into individual autonomous entities. The conventional resource management models, however, are not suitable for the distributed and decentralized environment because of their centralized nature. In this paper, an agent-based resource management model is proposed. The proposed model applies employment relation-driven fractal organization (FrOrg) into organizational model for distributed production resources and presents a resource management framework based on employment contracts. The fractal organization is a structured association in which a self-similar pattern recursively appears, and employment relations between production resources are recursively constructed throughout the entire production system.
