  • In this paper a neural network controller called "Feedback-State Learning" for control of the attitude of a wheeled inverted pendulum is presented. For the controller the design of a stable feedback controller is necessary, so the LQR is used for the feedback controller because the LQR has good performance on controlling nonlinear systems. And the neural networks are used for a feed forward controller. The designed controller is applied to the stabilization of a wheeled inverted pendulum. Because of its nonlinear characteristics such as friction and parameter variations in the linearization, the wheeled inverted pendulum is used for demonstration of the effectiveness of the proposed controller.

  • This paper describes the design of a force measurement and communication system for the force measuring system in industrial robots. The force measurement and communication system is composed of a multi-axis force sensor and a controller for measuring the forces (x-direction force, y-direction force and z-direction force) and sending the measured forces to the robot's controller (PLC: Programmable Logic Controller). In this paper, the force measurement and communication system was designed and fabricated by using a DSP (Digital Signal Processor). An environment test and a grinding and deburring test using an industrial robot with the force measurement and communication system with three-axis force sensor were carried out to characterize the system. The tests showed that the system could safely measure the forces from the three-axis force sensor and send the measured forces to the industrial robot's controller while the grinding and deburring test was performed. Thus, it is thought that the fabricated force measurement and communication system could be used for controlling the force for an industrial robot's grinding and deburring.

  • In a single-phase power factor correction (PFC), the standard cascaded control algorithm using a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller has two main drawbacks: an inability to track sinusoidal current reference and low harmonic compensation capability. These drawbacks cause poor power factor and high harmonics in grid current. To improve these drawbacks, this paper uses a proportional-integral-derivative-resonant (PIDR) controller which combines a type-III PID with proportional-resonant (PR) controllers in the PFC. Based on a small signal model of the PFC, the type-III PID controller was implemented taking into account the bandwidth and phase margin of the PFC system. To adopt the PR controllers, the spectrum of inductor current of the PFC was analyzed in frequency domain. The hybrid PIDR controller were simulated using PSCAD/EMTDC and implemented on a 3 kW PFC prototype hardware. The performance results of the hybrid PIDR controller were compared with those of an individual type-III PID controller. Both controllers were implemented successfully in the single-phase PFC. The total harmonic distortion of the proposed controller were much better than those of the individual type-III PID controller.

  • Uncertainties are the main reasons of deterioration of contour control of industrial articulated robot arm. In this paper, a high-precision contour control method was proposed to overcome some main uncertainties, such as torque saturation, system delay dynamics, interference between robot links, friction, and so on. Firstly, each considered factor of uncertainties was introduced briefly. Then proper realizable objective trajectory generation was presented to avoid torque saturation from objective trajectory. According to the model of industrial articulated robot arm, construction of Gaussian neural network controller with considering system delay dynamic, interference between robot links and friction was explained in detail. Finally, through the experiment and simulation, the effectiveness of proposed method was verified. Furthermore, based on the results it was shown that the Gaussian neural network controller can be also adapted for the various kinds of friction and high-speed motion of industrial articulated robot arm.

  • The purpose of this paper is the development of a fully integrated simulation package for industrial robot. The simulation package consists of kinematics, dynamics, and control. The kinematics contains trajectory plans and inverse kinematics. The dynamics combines manipulator dynamics and actuator dynamics including the effect of payloads and viscous frictions. The control is a hardware oriented scheme which contains position controller, velocity controller, current controller, and PWM generator. Thus, the simulation package can be used not only for theoretical purposes but also for development purposes in industry. Using this package, the characteristics and performances of the SCARA robot, which has been developed in GSIS, are investigated.

  • In this work, an inverse dynamic control method is developed to enhance tracking performance of industrial robots, which effectively deal with the nonlinear dynamic interferential forces. In general, the DFF (Dynamic Feed-Forward) controller and the CTM (Computed-Torque Method) controller are used for dynamic control for industrial robots. We study on the practical issues for implementing these inverse dynamic controllers via simulations and experiments. We develop the dynamic models in two different ways. One is a model designed through Newton-Euler method for real time computation and the other is a model designed through SimMechanics for evaluating the developed controller via simulations. We evaluate the nominal performance and robustness of the controller via simulations and experiments using serial 4-DOF HyRoHILS (Hyundai Robot Hardware-In-the-Loop Simulation) system. The results show that the inverse dynamic controller is effective and practically useful for a real control structure.

  • A construction robot has been developed for higher productivity and better safety in various construction fields. Especially, curtain wall is suitable for outer wall material of tall commercial building and apartment complexes. This heavy material is, however, hard to install with a manpower and outdated equipment. For this reason, the prototype of ASCI (Automation System for Curtain wall Installation) was developed. This system has a robot controller(i.e. hand-held remote control unit) for the transfer information signal between human operator and robot system. Although study has been conducted on manual controller of ASCI, hardly any information is known about the operator's opinion. In this study, a questionnaire was completed by operator to get their opinion about aspects which need to design a more comfortable and productive manual controller of construction machinery, robot included. Through the result of study, it is expected that this technical data is contributed to the robot controller design for comfort and productivity of various industrial machinery.

  • In this study we described Binary-Decision Method Programmable Controller that is faster than conventional Programmable Controller (P.C) using the Boolean method. An algorithm for the optimal BD program was systematically developed by using the incomplete multiple output function and the residual characteristic function. The potential applications of BD programmable controller for the problems of industrial control were illustrated, which include on-off sequential control function and also the tasks involving continuous data processing and PID control. An example was presented that has shown how BD programmable controller and ICU (Industrial Control Unit) controller can be applied to the sequential logics.

  • This paper describes a design of an induction motor control system using a 2 degree-of-freedom PI controller to compensate the effects of disturbance without degrading tracking performance. On the basis of vector control principle, the control system is simulated by using the ACSL and implemented on a DSP system(TMS320C31). In designing the 2 DOF controller, we can tune the performance of either the tracking or disturbance rejection independently without affecting the other. With the experimental results, the 2 DOF controller has shown a better performance in command tracking and disturbance rejection than a conventional PI controller.

  • In this paper, the nonlinear I/O characteristic of fuzzy logic controller is analyzed by using cell concept. Sources of the nonlinearity in a fuzzy logic controller include the fuzzification, the fuzzy reasoning and the defuzzification. A closed form expression for the defuzzified output is derived in case of a fuzzy logic controller with two inputs, triangular memberships, MacVicar-Whelan type linguistic rules, and direct fuzzy reasoning. As a result, it is shown that fuzzy logic controller is a nonlinear controller. Also its nonlinearity is analyzed with respect to the conventional PID control and the sliding mode control.
