  • In this paper, a new speed sensorless induction motor scheme which can work at any speed including the zero speed is presented. The proposed method is robust to secondary resistance variations. Simultaneous estimation of speed and secondary resistance are realized based on a feedforward type torque control scheme. The secondary flux with a low frequency sinusoidal waveform is used to help the estimation. Simulations results supported by experiments are given to show the effectiveness of this method.

  • Vector control schemes are used in inverter-fed induction motor drives to obtain high performance. Crucial to the success of the vector control scheme is the knowledge of the instantaneous position of the rotor flux. However, the position of the rotor flux change with temperature and magnetic saturation of the motor. This variation cause deterioration of both steady state and dynamic operation of the motor drives. Performance degradation is in the form of input-output torque nonlinearity and saturation of the motor. Analytic expressions are derived to evaluate the effects due to parameter sensitivity. Also, dynamic response is shown by speed command with the variation of stator and rotor resistance.

  • Steep-fronted surges associated with motor witching cause relatively large turn-to-turn winding stress. In order to calculate the surge level at the motor terminals, equivalent circuits consist of three parts with power sources, load cable and motor constants. This paper presents switching surges phenomena occurred in a high voltgae induction motor witching by EMTP.

  • A design method of three phase induction motors that have characteristics of low starting current and high starting torque is proposed. This design method is based on the traditional theory related to the skin effect and the gap saturation effect. The starting performances and the analysis method are explained in short. Finally, comparison of example design data on electric hoist motor with standard motor is shown.

  • A nonlinear adaptive speed controller is designed for induction motors. Only the measurement of the stator current is used to design the controller and the observers. The sliding mode cascade observer is introduced to estimate the stator current and its time derivatives. The open-loop observer are designed to estimate the rotor flux and its time derivatives. The adaptive observer is also designed to estimate the rotor resistance. Sequentially, the rotor speed can be calculated using these estimated values. It is shown that the estimation errors of the corresponding states and the parameter converge to the specified residual set. It is also shown that the speed controller using these estimates is performed well. The experimental results are represented to investigate the validity of the proposed observer and controller.

  • Pumping liquid metal in nuclear power plant application by conventional centrifugal pumps pose difficulties such as bearing wear out at high temperatures and leak proof sealing of the liquid metal. MHD machine is obtained by replacing solid conducting secondary of conventional motors with ionized gas or liquid metal. It is used for reactor cooling pump because of construction simplicity, perfect sealing and easy operation/maintenance MHD pump is complicated because it includes electromagnetic and hydrodynamic phenomena. The principle of MHD Pumps is described in this paper. We design small laboratory size Flat Linear Induction Pump(FLIP) for transferring sodium.

  • This paper proposes a speed sensorless vector control of induction motor using a minimum-order EKF(extended kalman filter). Minimum-order EKF has the advantage of reducing the computational estimation cost because the stator current is not estimated. EKF does not deteriorate the performance of the overall speed control system, even though the measurements are relatively noisy. The estimated rotor speed is used for vector control and overall speed control. Computer simulations of the speed sensorless vector control are carried out to test the usefulness of the minimum-order EKF algorithm.

  • An additional consideration for using general Induction Motor are about copper loss by harmonic component of source, and increase of iron loss due to switching frequency in semiconductor devices, so that these losses come to be significant elements on design for motors used for variable V/F. In this paper, therefore, the effects of the losses are discussed, in the case the source is generated by square wave and PWM Inverter.

  • The diagnosis of mechanical load and of power transmission system failures is usually carried out through mechanical signals such as vibration signals, acoustic emissions, motor speed envelope. If the mechanical load comes from an electrical machine the mechanical failures could be detected previously. Mechanical rotor imbalances and rotor eccentricities are reflected in electric, electromagnetic and mechanical quantities. Therefore, many surveillance schemes apply to the Fourier spectrum of a line current in order to monitor the motor condition. Due to the interaction of the currents and voltages, both these current harmonics are also reflected by a single harmonic component in the frequency spectrum of the electric power. Motor Current Signature Analysis is the usuful technique to assess machine electrical condition.

Novel Soft Starting Algorithm of Single Phase Induction Motors by Using PWM Inverter

  • This paper proposes a novel soft starting algorithm by using PWM inverter technique to control an amplitude of the motor starting current at a single-phase induction motor (SPIM). Traditional SPIM starting methods such as a Split-Phase, Capacitor-Start, Permanent-Split Capacitor (PSC), Capacitor-Start Capacitor-Run (CSCR), basically cannot control the magnitude of starting current due to the fixed system structures. Therefore, in this paper, a soft starting algorithm based on a proportional resonant (PR) control with a variable and constant frequency is proposed to reduce the inrush current and starting up time. In addition, a transition algorithm for operation modes is devised to generate a constant voltage and constant frequency (CVCF). The validity and effectiveness of the proposed soft starting method and transition algorithm are verified through experimental results.
