  • The induction generator has many advantages compared to the synchronous generator in terms of cost and maintenance. So squirrel cage induction generator has been recently supplied in small hydroelectric power station. Squirrel cage induction generator generates a high inrush current at the grid-connection. This high inrush current causes a voltage drop on the grid. In order to increase the supply of the induction generator, it is very important to find the method of reducing inrush current and voltage drop.

  • Recently induction generator has been applied to many small hydro power plants. Induction generator needs a reactive power for magnetization. The reactive power of induction generator is being supplied from the supply side mostly. The use of induction generators in the power distribution grid can affect the power factor. The power factor of induction generator is fixed already during production. The power factor in the distribution system is due to the increase or decrease of the load rather than due to the induction generator. In this study, we analyzed how the power factor is changed according to the load increase or decrease in the distribution lines.

  • Induction generator is the most common generator in wind energy systems because of its simplicity, ruggedness, little maintenance, price and etc. But the main drawbacks in induction generator is its need of reactive power means to build up the terminal voltage. This drawback is not an obstacle today where PWM inverters can accurately supplies the induction generator with its need from reactive power. For a insurance of three-phase induction generator requires capacitive reactance of the terminal. Most of previous work uses numerical iterative method to determine this minimum capacitor. But the numerical iteration takes long time and divergence may be occurs. In this paper is presented the design methods of the minimum self-excited capacitor required for induction generator operation. And a new formula from the equivalent circuit for stable generation operation of self-excited induction generator calculates the proper capacity to obtain the terminal voltage of the load stage. The validity of proposed design methods is confirmed by experimental and computed results.

  • This paper is about a modified induction generator which has a free inner-rotor. The improved induction generator utilizes a free inner-rotor that has a superconducting magnet. This kind of generator has same approach when analyzing as an ordinary induction generator, but shows a little difference when expressing in designing and analyzing such the machines.

  • In this paper, a novel control algorithm to minimize the power loss of the induction generator for wind power generation system is presented. The proposed method is based on the flux level reduction, where the flux level is computed from the machine model for the optimum d-axis current of the generator. For the vector-controlled induction generator, the d-axis current controls the excitation level in order to minimize the generator loss while the q-axis current controls the generator torque, by which the speed of the induction generator is controlled according to the variation of the wind speed in order to produce the maximum output power. Wind turbine simulator has been implemented in laboratory to validate the theoretical development. The experimental results show that the loss minimization process is more effective at low wind speed and that the percent of power loss saving can approach to 25%. Experimental results are shown to verify the validity of the proposed scheme.

  • The detail simulation modeling of fully-fed induction generator is investigated through PC based MATLAB/Simulink environment. Generator's stator currents are controlled by indirect vector control method. In this method, generator side converter controls the maximum excitation (air gap flux) by stator d-axis current and controls generator torque by stator q-axis current. Induction generator speed is controlled by tip speed ratio (TSR) upon the wind speed variations in order to generate the maximum output power. The generator torque model is specified as a 3-blade wind turbine with rating, then, the model is simulated under normal operating condition and three different fault conditions. The matlab model designed for fully-fed induction generator based wind farm provides good performance under normal and grid fault conditions. It provides good results for different pwm techniques and fault conditions except the single-phase line to ground fault, which should be verified with real time data from wind farms.

  • This paper deals with the secondary excited induction generator applied to random wave input generation system. As it is preferred to stabilize the output voltage and frequency in the constant level, microcomputer controlled CSI connected to the secondary windings supplies the secondary current with slip frequency. For testing this method, the input torque simulator is constructed, according to the power flow analysis. The experimental and numerical results show the advantage of secondary excited induction generator system for the random input wave generation system.

  • This paper deals with the transient performance of an induction generator in a wind power plant. An induction generator and grid equipment may be damaged when a sudden disturbance occurs, for example, a sudden disconnection from the utility grid. The reasons for this are over-voltage and over speed. This paper analyzes this phenomena using PSCAD/EMTDC and coincides with its corresponding mathematical equation.
