The main analysis tools of this study included a comparison of the backward and forward linkage effects, as well as the induced effects of the self-industry and other industries and the induced coefficients including products, value-added, employee's pay, sales surplus, and employment. Results : Based on the results of the analysis, the ubiquitous healthcare industry has great economic impacts which affects major macroeconomic factors including production and the backward linkage effect. Additionally, the induced effects of the self-industry, the ubiquitous healthcare industry, are significant compared to other industries in terms of production, employee's pay and operating surplus. Conclusions : The ubiquitous healthcare industry is a growth engines for national development. This paper offers alternatives for efficient industrial policies.
Objectives: This study was designed to investigate effects of Gwibitang on the glutamate-induced toxicity of primary rat neonatal astrocytes. Methods and Results: Gwibitang significantly recovered the glutamate-induced apoptosis and inhibited the generation of $H_2O_2$ in astrocytes. In addition, both Gwibitang and antioxidants such as GSH reduced the glutamate-induced cytotoxicity in astrocytes, indicating that Gwibitang possibly had an antioxidative effect. Moreover, Gwibitang also inhibited the glutamate-induced degradation of Bcl-2 protein and poly(ADP)-ribose polymerase (PARP) in astrocytes. Conclusions: We suggest that Gwibitang has protective effects on glutamate-induced cytotoxicity via an antioxidative mechanism.

The medicinal mushroom Inonotus obliquus is a traditional and widely used multi-functional fungus. In this study, we have investigated whether Inonotus obliquus (Chaga mushroom) extracts exerts anti-oxidant effects on cisplatin-induced cytotoxicity in auditory cell line, HEI-OC1 cells. First of all, Chaga extracts has no harmful effects on viability of HEI-OC1 cells in the dose range of $65{\sim}125{\mu}g/m{\ell}$. Moreover, it shows cyto-protective effects on the cells treated with cisplatin-induced cytotoxicity in HEI-OC1 cells and the damage of hair cells arrays of the rat primary organ of Corti explants in the presence of cisplatin. Pretreatment with Chaga extracts inhibited the cell death, reactive oxygen species generation (ROS), lipid peroxidation induced by cisplatin. These effects were associated with the induction of antioxidant enzyme by Chaga extracts. We further investigated the effects of Chaga extracts on expression of antioxidant enzymes such as Cu, Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD 1) and Mn SOD (SOD 2) by RT-PCR. In addition, Chaga extracts shows SOD activity and SOD protein expression in cisplatin treated group induced similar to control group. Taken together, these results indicate that Chaga extracts can prevent cisplatin-induced cytotoxicity by radical-scavenging activity (SOD activity) in HEI-OC1 cells. It might be an effective as antioxidant and further studies on the chemo-preventive mechanisms of Inonotus obliquus are needed.
Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide(VIP) and ${\beta}-adrenergic$ agonists have immunomodultory effects on the peripheral blood T-lymphocytes of rat through their own receptors. Both of them utilize the same signal transduction pathway. That is, the stimulatory guanine nucleotide binding protein(G protein) mediates the receptor-adenylyl cyclase coupling, producing intracellular increase of cyclic adenosine monophosphate(cAMP). In the previous experiment, propranolol, a ${\beta}-adrenergic$ receptor blocker, inhibited the VIP-induced protein phosphorylation in lymphocytes. However, propranolol could not block the effect induced by forskolin. Therefore, this study was designed to elucidate the mechanism of the inhibitory action of propranolol on the effects of VIP. Using peripheral blood lymphocytes of rats, the effect of propranolol on the receptor binding characteristics of VIP was observed. And the effects of propranolol were compared to the effects of timolol on the cAMP increase induced by isoproterenol, VIP or forskolin. The results obtained are as follows. 1) Receptor binding study showed no significant differences in the affinity or density of VIP receptor between the control and propranolol-pretreated groups. 2) VIP-induced increase of cAMP was inhibited by propranolol, but not by timolol. 3) Both propranolol and timolol suppressed the isoproterenol-induced cAMP increase. 4) Propranolol also inhibited the histamine-induced cAMP increase. 5) Propranolol did not inhibit the increase of cAMP stimulated by forskolin. 6) Lidocaine did not block the VIP-induced cAMP increase. These results show that the inhibitory mechanism of propranolol is not related to ${\beta}-adrenergic$ receptor or its membrane stabilizing effect, and it is suggested that propranolol can block the effects of VIP by inhibiting the intermediate step between the VIP receptor and adenylyl cyclase.
Objective: In this study, the author tried to investigate whether revised Seonbangpaedok-tang (SPT) and Sigyeongcheongpye-tang (SCT) significantly effects both PMA-induced mucin production and MUC5AC gene expression from airway epithelial cells. Objective: In this study, the author tried to investigate whether revised Seonbangpaedok-tang (SPT) and Sigyeongcheongpye-tang (SCT) significantly affects both PMA-induced mucin production and MUC5AC gene expression from airway epithelial cells. Materials and Methods: Confluent NCI-H292 cells were pretreated for 30 min in the presence of SPT and SCT and treated with PMA (10 ng/$m{\ell}$), to assess the effects of the agents on PMA-induced mucin production by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Also, the effects of the agents on PMA-induced MUC5AC gene expression from the same cells were investigated. Possible cytotoxicities of the agent were assessed by measuring the rate of survival and proliferation of NCI-H292 cells after treatment of agents during 48 hrs. Results: (1) SPT and SCT did not show significant cytotoxicity to NCI-H292 cells; (2) SPT significantly inhibitedthe expression levels of PMA-induced MUC5AC gene in NCI-H292 cells. SCT slightly decreased the expression levels of PMA-induced MUC5AC gene; (3) SPT significantly decreased PMA-induced mucin production from NCI-H292 cells. However, SCT did not affect mucin production. Conclusion: Theseresults suggest that SPT can not only affect the production of mucin but also the expression of the mucin gene and this explains the traditional use of SPT in oriental medicine. The effects of SPT and SCT with their components should be further investigated using animal experimental models that reflect pathophysiology of airway diseases via ongoing studies.
Recently, indirect evidences suggest that Na-Ca exchange mechanism is involved in bone resorption. To study this suggestion, effects of several drugs which increase the intracellular sodium concentration by different mechanisms on the PTH-induced bone resorption were analysed employing organ culture. Ulnae and radii were removed from 19-day fetal rats, prelabelled by subcutaneous injection of $200{\mu}\;Ci^{45}CaC1_2$ on the 17th day of gestation, and then explanted on the membrane filters in organ culture dishes. For studying the effects of amiloride, ouabain, monensin, and veratridine on the PTH-induced bone resorption, control group was cultured in BGJb media containing PTH (0.4U/ml) while experimental group was cultured in BGJb media containing PTH and drugs. The effects of drugs on the PTH-induced bone resorption were observed by the ratios of $\%-release$ of $^{45}Ca$ between paired control and experimental groups. The results were as follows: 1. $^{45}Ca$ release was significantly increased by PTH (0.4U/ml) at 48 and 72 hours of culture. 2. Amiloride, at concentration of $500{\mu}M$, significantly inhibited the PTH-induced bone resorption after 48 and 72 hours of culture. 3. Ouabain, at concentration of 0.1 mM, presented significant inhibition of PTH-induced bone resorption after 48 and 72 hours of culture, and at 0.5mM and 1mM, presented significant inhibition of PTH-induced bone resorption after 72 hours of culture. 4. Monensin, at concentration of 500nM, significantly inhibited PTH-induced bone resorption after 72 hours of culture. 5. Veratridine, at concentration of 0.5mM, presented significant inhibition of PTH-induced bone resorption after 48 and 72 hours of culture, and at 1mM, presented significant inhibition of PTH-induced bone resorption after 72 hours of culture. Taken altogether, these results suggest that Na-Ca exchange mechanism play a role in PTH-induced bone resolution.
Objectives : The water extract of Gwibitang (GBT) has been traditionally used for treatment of psychologic disease and brain damage in Oriental Medicine, This study was designed to investigate the effect of GBT on the glutamate-induced toxicity of rat C6 glial cells. Methods : The cultured cells were pretreated with GBT and exposed to glutamate, The cell damage was assessed by using MTT assay and Hoechst, IC-l staining, Results : GBT had protective effects in glutamate-induced cytotoxicity, which was revealed as apoptosis characterized by chromatic condensation and the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential in C6 glial cells. However, GBT and glutamate had no effect in the activation of caspase family cysteine proteases including caspase-3, -8 and -9 proteasesin C6 glial ce]]s, GBT significantly recovered the depletion of GSH and inhibited the generation of $H_2O_2$ by glutamate in C6 glial cells. In addition, both GBT and antioxidants such as GSH and NAC protected the glutamate-induced cytotoxicity in C6 glial cells, indicating that GBT possibly has antioxidative effect. Moreover, GBT also inhibited the glutamate-induced degradation of $IkB{\alpha}$ in C6 glial cells, This result suggest that GBT has some inhibitory effects on the transcriptional activation of $NF-_{k}B$. Conclusions : GBT has protective effects in glutamate-induced cytotoxicity via an antioxidative mechanism.
To investigate and evaluated the scavenging and antioxidative effects of various flavonoids on paraquat induced toxicity, in vivo and vitro tests of eight flavonoids (catechin, epocatechin, flavone, chrysin, apigenin, quercetin, morin and biochanin A) were carried out. The generation of reactive oxygen substances(ROS) in PMS-NADH system $H_2O_2$ induced hemolysis and lipidperoxidation to blood, NADPH dependent lipidperoxidation to liver and lung microsome by paraquat were studied. The results are summerized as follows; 1) In the concentration ranges from 3.3 to 9.8$\mu$M of catechin, epicatechin, quercetin and biochanin A removed the 50% of DPPH radical scavenging effects. 2) In the concentration ranges from 0.60 to 1.86 mM of catechin, epicatechin, quercetin and biochanin A showed the inhibitory and antioxidative activity on superoxide anion which gernerated in PMA-NADH system. 3) In the concentration ranges from 0.12 to 0.49mM of catechin, epicatechin, quercetin and biochanin A showed the inhibitory and antioxidative activity on H202 which generated in PMA-NADH system. 4) In the concentration ranges from 0.6 x10$^{-5}$ to 6.3 x 10$^{-5}$mM of catechin, epicatechin, flavone, chrysin, quercetin and morin showed the inhibitory and antioxidative activity on $H_2O_2$ induced hemolysis to blood 5) All flavonoids tested exhibited inhibitory and antioxidative effects on paraquat induced liver and tung microsomal lipidperoxidation. Therefore, all flavonoids evaluated showed the useful compounds for scavenger and antioxidant on paraquat induced toxicity.
Alzheimer's disease (AD) involves neuronal degeneration with impaired cholinergic transmission, particularly in areas of the brain associated with learning and memory. Several cholinesterase inhibitors are widely prescribed to ameliorate the cognitive deficits in AD patients. In an attempt to examine if tacrine and donepezil, two well-known cholinesterase inhibitors, exhibit additional pharmacological actions in primary cultured rat cortical cells, we investigated the effects on neuronal injuries induced by glutamate or N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA), $\beta$-amyloid fragment ( $A_{{beta}25-35)}$), and various oxidative insults. Both tacrine and donepezil did not significantly inhibit the excitotoxic neuronal damage induced by glutamate. However, tacrine inhibited the toxicity induced by NMDA in a concentration-dependent fashion. In addition, tacrine significantly inhibited the $A_{{beta}25-35)}$-induced neuronal injury at the concentration of 50 $\mu$M. In contrast, donepezil did not reduce the NMDA- nor $A_{{beta}25-35)}$-induced neuronal injury. Tacrine and donepezil had no effects on oxidative neuronal injuries in cultures nor on lipid peroxidation in vitro. These results suggest that, in addition to its anticholinesterase activity, the neuroprotective effects by tacrine against the NMDA- and $A_{{beta}25-35)$-induced toxicity may be beneficial for the treatment of AD. In contrast, the potent and selective inhibition of central acetylcholinesterase appears to be the major action mechanism of donepezil.
