Purpose: This study aimed at improving the indoor environment of the office building by measuring the indoor environment and conducting a survey. Method: The measurement was conducted from January 13 to March 16 in 2012, targeting 44 sites in same office building located in Seoul, South Korea. The lists of measurement such as dry-blub temperature, relative humidity, formaldehyde (HCHO), asbestos, carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particle pollution (PM10) were measured. In addition, illuminance which belongs to light environment and noise in sound[acoustical] environment were measured respectively. Result: The buildings showed overall pleasant conditions. In terms of the thermal, air, sound, and visual environment, each measurements were satisfied with the requirements in standard, within pleasant ranges, except several sites. However, the survey results were revealed that the office workers were mostly dissatisfied with their indoor environment. Given that the measured values were mostly within standards, the results of survey might have resulted from a compensation mentality biased toward the subjects in psychological terms.
In order to increase the indoor air purification effect of plants, plants need to be placed on 5-10% of indoor spaces. To increase the density and utilization of plants in indoor spaces, studies on bio-wall, a vertical green wall system, have been recently conducted. The purpose of this study was to investigate the growth characteristics of 7 indoor plants introduced to the system and their rooting zones at different irrigation cycles. This study was conducted to investigate a proper irrigation cycle for the continuous maintenance of bio-wall systems. The conditions of their growth environment were maintained as follows: light intensity, 20-50 μmol·m-2·s-1 PPFD; and temperature, 20 - 25℃. For fertilization, Hyponex diluted with water at the ratio of 1:1,000 was supplied to plants. Irrigation was treated at intervals of 1, 3, 5, and 7 days for 1 hour at a time. As a result, there was no significant difference in the growth of plants between different irrigation cycles. Dieffenbachia 'Marianne' showed a significant decrease in the number of leaves at the irrigation cycle of 7 days. In addition, the chlorophyll content was relatively low at the irrigation cycle of 7 days. In terms of the color of leaves, a decrease in L value and b value and an increase in a value were observed, resulting in changes in brightness and color. Ardisia pusilla 'Variegata' showed a slightly higher photosynthetic activity and stomatal conductance when it was watered every day and once per 5 days, while Epipremnum aureum showed a relatively higher photosynthetic activity and stomatal conductance at the irrigation cycle of 3 days. In the case of root activity, it was found that the longer irrigation cycle, the higher root activity compared to daily irrigation. The development of roots of Peperomia clusiifolia was promoted by watering at long intervals. However, in the case of Aglaonema 'Siam-Aurora', the total number of roots decreased at the interval of 7 days. In conclusion, a proper irrigation cycle for the sustainable maintenance of vertical bio-wall systems seems to be 3 days.
Background: Adolescents are relatively more sensitive than adults to exposure to indoor pollutants. The indoor air quality in classrooms where students spend time together must therefore be managed at a safe level because it can affect the health of students. Objectives: In this study, three types of green-wall models were applied to classrooms where students spend a long time in a limited space, and the resulting effects on reducing PM were evaluated. Methods: In the middle school classrooms which were selected as the experimental subjects, IoT-based indoor air quality monitoring equipment was installed for real-time monitoring. Three types of plant models (passive, active, and active+light) were installed in each classroom to evaluate the effects on improving indoor air quality. Results: The concentration of PM in the classroom is influenced by outdoor air quality, but repeated increases and decreases in concentration were observed due to the influence of students' activities. There was a PM reduction effect by applying the green-wall model. There was a difference in PM reduction efficiency depending on the type of green-wall model, and the reduction efficiency of the active model was higher than the passive model. Conclusions: The active green-wall model can be used as an efficient method of improving indoor air quality. Additionally, more research is needed to increase the efficiency of improving indoor air quality by setting conditions that can stimulate the growth of each type of plant.
In this paper, we introduce a new method for controlling the illumination of LEDs in visible light communication (VLC) by changing the duty cycle of Manchester code. When VLC data were transmitted in Manchester code, the average optical power of the LEDs was proportional to the duty cycle. In experiments, we controlled the illumination of a $3{\times}3$ LED array from 10% to 90% of its peak value by changing the duty cycle of the Manchester code. The synchronizing clocks required for encoding and decoding the Manchester code were supplied by pulse generators that were connected to a 220 V power line. All pulse generators made the same pulses with a repetition frequency of 120 Hz, and they were synchronized with the full-wave rectified voltage of the power line. This scheme is a very simple and useful method for constructing indoor wireless sensor networks using LED light.
Visible light communication (VLC) is considered a strong future candidate for indoor wireless communication. However, its performance seems to be relatively unsatisfactory when compared to wireless local area network (WLAN) communication using millimeter waves. To improve the performance of VLC, numerous technologies have been proposed so far, in both electrical and optical domains. Among the proposals, optical beamforming (OB) is an optical-domain technology that can concentrate light in a specific direction or on a target spot. It can significantly improve VLC performance and can be widely used, because it does not depend on electrical modulation schemes. Therefore, this review discusses the concept, principle, and types of OB, the structure of a VLC system using OB, performance results of OB, and the combination of OB with electrical signal modulation in VLC. OB is expected to be one of the key techniques in future VLC implementations, similar to radio-frequency beamforming in millimeter-wave communication.
Recently, exposed concrete designs have been placed everywhere due to increased interest in indoor residential environments. In addition, in order to overcome the disadvantages of litracon, which was developed by mixing optical fiber, LEFC(Light Emotion Friendly Concrete) was developed in Korea, which improved unit price and constructivity by inserting hard acrylic rods. LEFC, using foaming agent and lightweight aggregate for light weighting, has disadvantages that decrease mechanical properties, and thus improved mechanical properties by using ultra-high performance concrete. Also, due to the characteristics of UHPC materials, it showed excellent self-consolidating performance. Considering these characteristics, a LEFC mold with pattern design was developed. The LEFC blocks were built so that pattern shapes could be seen and these were applied on-site to Sewoon plaza, located in Seoul.
This paper presents an indoor prototype for wireless digital signal transmission using Visible Light Communications (VLC) in which high power Light Emitting Diode (LED) is used. Using low cost and off-the-shelf components, the transmitter module is constructed using an AVR Atmega128 microcontroller and commercial white beam LEDs. Modulating the light intensity of the LED enables digital signals to be transmitted across the optical link. The receiver module employs a high speed PIN photodetector for optical signal detection and a recovery circuit for optical-electro signal conversion. By sending digitalized data via VLC technology, many applications can be realized in the areas of consumer advertising, traffic safety information and disaster control.
Because hyperspectral imaging provides detailed spectral information across a broad range of wavelengths, it can be utilized in numerous applications, including environmental monitoring, food quality inspection, medical diagnosis, material identification, art authentication, and crime scene analysis. However, hyperspectral images often contain various types of distortions due to the environmental conditions during image acquisition, which necessitates the proper removal of these distortions through a data preprocessing process. In this study, a preprocessing method was investigated to effectively correct the distortion caused by artificial light sources used in indoor hyperspectral imaging. For this purpose, a halogen-tungsten artificial light source was installed indoors, and hyperspectral images were acquired. The acquired images were then corrected for distortion using a preprocessing that does not require complex auxiliary equipment. After the corrections were made, the results were analyzed. According to the analysis, a statistical transformation technique using mean and standard deviation with reference to a reference signal was found to be the most effective in correcting distortions caused by artificial light sources.
There are high recognitions on the importance of comforts in Elderly living environment, but the circumstance is that studies on seniors facility space itself are approached only in planning level, and studies on lighting environment which is significantly associated with the comfort in the indoor environment of seniors where they actually spend the majority of their time are not that active. This study was intended to deduce cozy bedroom environment to which existing elderly care facility can be improved by using light shelf the lighting system with the advantage of being able to serve both as building sun visor and lighting window simultaneously in order to analyze the interior environment of bedroom space of elderly care facility the indoor space where the aged spend the majority of their life and examine the directions for the improvement of existing building lighting system through remodeling and renovation. In this study, lighting performance analysis was done in a way that the windows of the bedroom unit in existing facility were set in southbound direction based on two standard types and were put under initial simulation with the use of Autodesk Revit 2011, and after the simulation results were converted to Green Building Studio gbXML file to be used in ECOTECT, Daylight Autonomy a dynamic simulation and static natural lighting simulation the existing method of calculating daylight factors were deduced through Ecotect Analysis 2011. In conclusion, exiting standard model was found in such a condition that the daylight factors for both type A and type B were above 5% the proper standard value, and required improvement. In case light shelf the natural lighting system was attached, the daylight factor was improved to proper standard value for type A, and also was improved above existing facility for type B.
