  • In this paper, we analyze and simulate performance of space time block coded (STBC) binary pulse amplitude modulation-direct sequence (BPAM-DS) ultra-wideband (UWB) systems with double binary turbo code in indoor environments for various ubiquitous healthcare (u-healthcare) applications. Indoor wireless channel is modeled as a modified Saleh and Valenzuela (SV) model proposed as a UWB indoor channel model by the IEEE 802.15.SG3a in July 2003. In the STBC encoding process, an Alamouti algorithm for real-valued signals is employed because UWB signals have the type of real signal constellation. It is assumed that the transmitter has knowledge about channel state information. From simulation results, it is shown that the STBC scheme does not have an influence on improving bit error probability performance of the BPAM-DS UWB systems. It is also confirmed that the results of this paper can be applicable for u-healthcare applications.

  • In visible light (VL) positioning based on angle of arrival (AOA) estimation for smart indoor service, the AOA parameters obtained at the receiver has sometimes a random and distributed angle form instead of a point angle form due to the multipath transfer of the actual visible light and short positioning distance. The AOA estimation of a VL signal with a random and parametric distributed angle form may give incorrect AOA parameter estimates, which may result in poor VL positioning performance. In this paper, we classify the AOA parameters of the received VL signal into three forms according to the actual positioning channel environment and consider the short-range VL positioning method. We propose a subspace-based AOA parameter estimation technique and a data fusion method, and analyzed the proposed method by simulation and the measurement of the real VL channel characteristics.

  • In this paper, we analyze the performance of pulse position modulation-time hopping ultra wide band (PPM-TH UWB) systems with antenna diversity technique in indoor wireless channel. A modified Saleh and Valenzuela (SV) model is adopted as a UWB indoor channel model. Perfect synchronization between a transmitter and a receiver is assumed. Therefore, coherent equal gain combining (EGC) scheme to collect the energy available in the multipath components is investigated. It is shown that the performance is improved by increasing the number of antennas at the receiver. The results of this paper can be applied to the applications of UWB.

  • Recently, hospital acquired infections have an increase interest as a public problems, which are caused of indoor pollutants in hospital. Microorganisms, ethylene oxide, formaldehyde, and anesthetic gases are main hazardous pollutants in hospital. The possible pathways of the infection are a respiratory channel as well as a blood channel. The blood channel is concerned since these pollutants might be dissolved into the Ringer's solution. The objective of this research was to evaluate the removal efficiencies of adsorption trap for formaldehyde and microorganisms as indoor pollutants which permeated into the Ringer's solution. Dissolved formaldehyde in the solution was increased with the injection dose time. The amount of dissolved formaldehyde was 67.5 $\pm$ 9.5% in Ringer's solution when injection dose time was controlled about 7hrs. An adsorption trap was designed for preventing formaldehyde and microorganisms to be permeated into Ringer's solution. The adsorption trap was packed with 0.4g of active carbon (60/80 mesh) in a sterilized plastic tube (7.79 cm length, 0.46 cm i.d.) and both ends were packed with glass wool. Devised infusion set equipped with the adsorption trap showed 99.9% of removal efficiency for formaldehyde. Microorganism numbers detected on sterilized water for injection and 5% dextrose infusion used in the hospital were 2,695 $\times 10^3$ cells/l and 4,190 $\times 10^3$ cells/l, respectively. Removal efficiency by the adsorption trap was 92.3 $\pm$ 8.5% as for microorgnisms.

  • This paper presents capacity characteristics of the indoor LOS(Line-Of-Sight) propagation channel for MIMO system at 5GHz. The distance between antenna elements, their moving path, and number of transmitting and receiving antennas can be determined by wanted eigen-vlaue, and channel capacity of the MIMO communication channel using only reliable simulation without measurements. The simulation uses 3D Ray tracing and patch scattering model to which electromagnetic material constants are applied. As distance between antenna elements increases, distribution of the eigen-value show a tendency to decrease, but channel capacity increases in LOS environment. However, despite of short distance between antenna elements, large value of channel capacity is obtained in positions which have high AS. When the position of receiver antennas are shifted, channel capacity hardly changed, and as number of antenna elements increases, channel capacity also increases regularly.

  • In proportion as the growth of the wireless sensor network applications, we need for more accuracy wireless channel information. In the case of indoor or outdoor wireless sensor networks, multipath propagation causes severe problems in terms of fading. Therefore, a path-loss model for multipath environment is required to optimize communication systems. This paper deals with log-normal path loss modeling of the indoor 2.4 GHz channel. We measured variation of the received signal strength between the sender and receiver of which separation was increased from 1 to 30m. The path-loss exponent and the standard deviation of wireless channel were determined by fitting of the measured data. By using the PRR(Packet Reception Rate) of this model. Wireless sensor channel is defined CR(Connect Region), DR(Disconnected Region). In order to verify the characteristics of wireless channel, we performed simulations and experiments. We demonstrated that connection ranges are 24m in indoor, and 14m in outdoor.

  • In this paper, we studied channel assignment and handover schemes for the indoor microcell systems. For efficient frequency spectrum reuse we proposed the high quality reassignment (HQR) scheme. Proposed HQR scheme tries to keep the reuse distances small by monitoring C/I of channels being used. To assign a channel for a new or handove call, the scheme checks C/I of all available channels. Then HQR assigns the channel that has C/I near the threshold value, A_TH. The scheme also checks C/I of ongoing calls and continuously reassigns a new channel when needed. It attempts handover not only when C/I gets below a handover threshold value, HO_TH, but also when C/I becomes above a high quality reassignment threshold, H_TH. The performance of the proposed HQR scheme was analyzed by a computer simulation configuraed. The performance of the scheme was also analyzed for various threshold values selected and the results are presented in this paper. The results show that HQR scheme perfomrs better than the scheme adopted for DECT.

  • In this paper, performance of a double binary turbo coded ultra wide band (UWB) system is analyzed and simulated in an indoor wireless channel. Binary pulse position modulation-time hopping (BPPM-TH) signals are considered. The indoor wireless channel is modeled as a modified Saleh and Valenzuela (SV) channel. The performance is evaluated in terms of bit error probability (BER). From the simulation results, it is seen that double binary turbo coding offers considerable coding gain with reasonable encoding complexity. It is also demonstrated that the performance of the UWB system can be substantially improved by increasing the number of iterations.

  • In this paper, Ulta-WideBand (UWB) channel measurement and modeling based on compressive sampling (CS) are proposed. The sparsity of the channel impulse response (CIR) of the UWB signal in frequency domain enables the proposed channel measurement to have a low-complexity and to provide a comparable performance compared with the existing approaches especially used for the indoor geo-localization purpose. Furthermore, to improve the performance under noisy situation, the soft thresholding method is also investigated in solving the optimization problem for signal recovery of CS. Via numerical results, the proposed channel measurement and modeling are evaluated with the real measured data in terms of location estimation error, bandwidth, and compression ratio for indoor geo-localization using UWB system.
