Feeding Habits and Growth of the Sea Urchin, Strongylocentrotus pulcherrimus (A. Agassiz) Reared in the Laboratory (실험실에서 사육한 말똥성게 Strongylocentrotus pulcherrimus (A. Agassiz)의 식성과 성장)

  • Strongylocentrotus pulcherrimus is one of the very important fishery stock in this country since its high demand for raw gonad. Although the demand has been continuously increasing, the natural stock of this species seems to be decreasing. Since fresh macroalgae are not always available, the substitution of terrestrial vegetables for algae as a principal food was examined for the intensive indoor culture of the sea urchin. The results from the studies on selective and non-selective feeding habits and nutritional efficiencies using 13 food stuffs (6 macroalgae, 5 vegetables and 2 animal products) indicate that algae can be substituted with vegetables in sea urchin culture. Although the growth of body weight was the highest when sea urchins were fed Undaria Pinnatifida, the gonad index of the sea urchins fed on spinach, radish leaf and lettuce was higher than that of this brown alga. Considering the different food efficiencies of body and gonad growth, spinach and radish leaf will be adequate during gonad growth season, while lettuce and Chinese cabbage will be suitable for test growth season. In particular, radish leaf, which is usually not eaten by humans, could be highly beneficial and very economical in the sea urchin culture.

Comparison of Nitrogen Metabolism in Yak (Bos grunniens) and Indigenous Cattle (Bos taurus) on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

  • The objective of the present study was to examine whether yaks possess any adaptive mechanisms of nitrogen (N) metabolism to survive in the harsh foraging environment of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. A grazing experiment on native alpine meadows was conducted to determine availability of herbage biomass and body weight (BW) change of yaks over the year, followed by two indoor feeding trials to investigate adaptation mechanisms of N metabolism in yaks fed at similar intake level to grazing conditions. Three castrated males of each of three genotypes; yak (Bos grunniens), indigenous cattle (Bos taurus) and their crossbred - cattleyak (Bos taurus male${\times}$Bos grunniens female), were used in the housed trials. Results showed that: i) Monthly herbage biomass production and daily grazing intakes by yaks over the year ranged from 220 to 4,664 kg DM per ha, and 1.90 to 8.50 kg DM, respectively. For about seven months each year, yaks suffer from malnutrition as a result of inadequate pasture conditions; ii) Urinary N excretion and N retention by yaks were significantly affected by feeding level, and yaks had a lower (p<0.05) average daily urinary N excretion (0.39 g/kg $BW^{0.75}$) and a greater (p<0.05) N retention (-0.09 g/kg $BW^{0.75}$) than indigenous cattle (0.47 and -0.16 g/kg $BW^{0.75}$, respectively). Fasting daily urinary N excretion was greater (p<0.05) for indigenous cattle than yaks (353 vs. 248 mg/kg $BW^{0.75}$). Purine derivative N excretion and purine derivative N index (PNI) increased with increasing feeding level, while the value of PNI was greater (p<0.05) for yaks and cattleyak (0.11 and 0.12, respectively) than for indigenous cattle (0.09) during the feeding trials. These results suggest that yaks could rely, in part, on the recycling of N to adapt to the harsh forage environment on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.), were used in the housed trials. A Study on the Planar Sleeve Monopole Antenna for Digital TV Reception (디지털 TV 수신을 위한 평면 슬리브 모노폴 안테나에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, a planar sleeve monopole antenna for indoor digital TV reception is presented. The antenna has broadband property with the planar monopole and ground of sleeve. Sleeve monopole and ground conductors of the antenna are on the same plane, and exited through CPW feeding. Sleeve monopole and ground of proposed antenna exist on coplanar plane, and excite as CPW. It used FR4 epoxy dielectric substrate of ${\varepsilon}r=4.4$, and the size is $20[mm]{\times}170[mm]{\times}1.6[mm]$ dimension. So the internal antenna is suitable. The measurement results of the fabricated antenna, return loss is larger than -10 [dB] in 470~806 [MHz]. Maximum gain is 0.59 [dBi] on E-plane at 810 MHz and 1.70 [dBi] on H-plane at 640 [MHz]. Radiation pattern is about the same that of dipole antenna at all frequency.

The Effect of Preferable Enrichments in the Laboratory Minipigs

  • Miniature pig (minipig) has been considered as an important laboratory animal in the developmental biotechnology researches with respect to xenotransplantation, stem cell, somatic cell nuclear transfer and embryo transfer. Given that the laboratory minipigs are normally housed at an indoor facility, they pass the time with lying or sleeping unless it is feeding time. Therefore, it is necessary to provide environmental enrichments to satisfy their innate needs and to lessen atypical behaviors caused by stress, on the purpose of welfare. We quantitatively investigated the type of preferable enrichment for the laboratory minipigs as well as its effect on their daily life. They presented a great interest to the pliable pail but a rapid loss of attraction to non-preferable enrichments. When the daily life of the single housed minipigs was quantified based on duration of playing or resting, they were more actively engaged in lively activities in the presence of enrichments. In addition, the provision of enrichments could effectively alleviate the conflicts during group housing when new pen mate was introduced, resulting in reduction of wound cases. We believe the considerations of animal welfare are essential to the conduct of better research because animals in the non-stressful environment will be more physiologically stable and provide more reliable results in the animal experiments.

Comparison and analysis on sheep meat quality and flavor under pasture-based fattening contrast to intensive pasture-based feeding system

  • Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of 4-month intensive feeding on the meat quality, fatty acid profile, flavor, and growth performance of grazing Hulunbuir sheep (HBS). Methods: The HBS were selected 4-months after birth in a pasture rearing system as the experimental animals (n = 44, female, average body weight 23.8±2.2 kg) then divided equally into pasture-based grazing fattening (PAS) and concentrate-included intensive fattening (CON) groups for another 4-month finishing. When finished fattening, all animals were slaughtered to collect musculus longissimus dorsi subcutaneous adipose tissue and to investigate the influences on meat quality, fatty acid profile, flavor and growth performance. Results: The results showed lambs in CON group got significantly higher live weight, hot carcass weight, and dressing percentage. The CON group had significantly higher value of redness (a*), lightness (L*) and water holding capacity (p<0.05), significantly lower value of Warner-Bratzler shear force than the PAS group (p<0.05). The subcutaneous fat from CON group lambs demonstrated a significantly higher content of C18:1 and C18:2 (p<0.05), but lower C14:0 and C16:0, indicating an increased degree of unsaturated fatty acid. The content of 4-methyloctanoic acid, 4-ethyloctanoic acid and 4-methylnonanoic acid had increased 2 to 4 times, representing a more intense odor in the CON group. However, the values were still lower than most sheep breeds reported, indicating the indoor feeding system could not fundamentally deteriorate the excellent meat characteristic of HBS. Conclusion: It was evident that lambs in CON group exhibited a better meat production performance, improved in meat color, texture and healthier fatty acid profile through pasture-weaned concentrate included intensive fattening system, which offers a good alternative regimen for lamb finishing and has a wide prospection in the HBS meat industry.

Indoor Tank Culture of the Abalone Haliotis discus hannai II. Effects of diets on the growth of young abalone (참전복 Haliotis discus hannai의 육상수조사육에 관한 연구 II. 먹이별 사육실험)

  • The study was conducted to develop the suitable abalone's diets for the indoor tank culture. The young abalone Haliotis discus hannai Ino sized ca. 20, 30 and 40 nun in shell length were fed three different diets, dried sea mustard Undaria pinnatifida HARVEY (control), artificial diet and terrestrial plants e. g. Chinese cabbage and Perilla leaf for 2 years. The growth rate of abalones fed an artificial diet was slightly higher than that of abalones from the control. However, the growth rate of abalones from terrestrial plants was significantly lower than that of abalones fed a control or an artificial diet (P< 0.05). The daily feeding rate of young abalones from terrestrial plants was slightly higher than that of abalones from the control. While, that of abalones from an artificial diet was approximately $30\%$ of that of abalones from a control or a terrestrial plants diet. The feed efficiency of abalone from artificail diet was higher than that of abalones from a control or a terrestrial plants diet, and the smaller size of young abalone showed the higher the feed efficiency. The EFA index values ${{\sum}n9/(20:4n6+20:5n3+22:6n3}$ of the dried sea mustard and the artificial diet were 1.26 and 3.64, respectively. These values were favorable, but the value of terrestrial plant, Perilla leaf was 127.00 indicating poor EFA index for normal growth of abalone.

Quantification of Reproductive Effort and Microscopic Observation on the Larval Development of Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum (Adams and Reeve, 1850) (바지락 (Ruditapes philippinarum)의 번식량 측정 및 유생발달에 관한 연구)

  • Larval development of the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum reared in an indoor tank system was examined in this study using light microscope and scanning electron microscope. To induce spawning and subsequent larval development, clams were collected from the intertidal zone at Gim-nyeong harbor in Jeju Island in August 2011. After 2 days of rearing in the tank, all Manila clams spawned in the midnight. Non-feeding trochophore larvae appeared 7hrsafter fertilization and the first D-shape larvae could be observed at 19 hrs. Twenty one days after fertilization the pediveliger larvae crawling on the bottom of the tank with well-developed foot were observed. Histology indicated that all the clams used in this study were in the ripe stage prior to spawning and the gonad-somatic index (GSI), a ratio of the egg mass to the tissue weight, of the ripe female measured by ELISA was 28.6%. The GSI of female clam declined to 17.3% after the massive spawning in the tank, suggesting that Manila clam discharged 40% of the total eggs during the first spawning event. In conclusion, spawning and subsequent larval development of Manila clam was successfully carried out in this study using an indoor tank system, and the information obtained in the present study could be useful in future Manila clam hatchery development.

Design of Dual-Polarization Antenna with High Cross-Polarization Discrimination (높은 교차편파 분리도를 가지는 이중편파 안테나 설계)

  • In a small cell base station used in densely populated areas, a dual polarized multiple antenna(MIMO) is mainly used to increase the cell capacity. This paper demonstrates a dual-polarization antenna with high cross-polarization discrimination(XPD) that can improve the capacity of a small cell using a dual polarization multiple antenna (MIMO). By using the symmetric structure and differential feeding, high XPD in all directions is achieved. In addition, a very similar radiation pattern is observed between each polarization. Because of high XPD and similar radiation pattern in all directions, proposed antenna is well adopted for small-cell multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) system. Experimental results shows that the proposed antenna has a bandwidth of 180 MHz (2.51~2.7 GHz), a maximum gain of 4.5 dBi (3.5~4.5 dBi), and a half-power beam width of 85 degrees. In addition, average XPD of 26.4 dB in all directions, more than 13.8 dB increase than previous dual-polarization antennas which use single emitter by using different feeding or selectively use polarization through switching.

AUTOMATIC CABBAGE FEEDING, PILING, AND UNLOADING SYSTEM FOR TRACTOR IMPLEMENTED CHINESE CABBAGE HARVESTER

  • Since Chinese cabbages weigh 3 to 5kgf and are big in size at the time of harvest, handling operations such as harvesting, loading and unloading including transportation require the highest labor demand among all other cultivation processes. Recently, though several cabbage harvesters were developed in Japan and Europe, those harvesters were not suitable for Chinese cabbages cultivated in Korea because of the size and shape. The cabbage harvester is almost meaningless without any proper cabbage piling and pallet unloading mechanism. Most harvesters developed so far adopted a sort of slide and free falling way in collecting cabbages into the pallet. Three or four labors are usually required for cleaning incoming cabbages and loading those in the pallet. Because of the required time for piling cabbages without severe damage and the required space capacity to carry empty and loaded pallets, harvesting speed should be adjusted in accordance with time required for consecutive operations. Up to now, any automatic or semi-automatic collecting device has not been developed in the world to pile cabbages on the layer one by one into the pallet in the ordered way with little damage and to unload pallet from the harvester continuously during the harvest process. To compromise system expenses and function, Semi-automatic cabbage piling and pallet unloading mechanism was devised and it required one labor. The foldable mesh pallet with a size of 1050mm x 1050mm x 1000mm and holding capacity of around 70 cabbages was utilized. The prototype for piling and unloading mechanism was composed of three parts such as feeding device, automatic piling device with retractable bellows, and pallet unloading device. Prior to developing the prototype, the geometric properties and the amount of the damage of the cabbage caused during the piling operation were investigated. Considering the height of the pallet, a series of cabbage carrying plates were mounted to the bracket chain to lift and to carry cabbages to the loading device. Indoor laboratory experiments showed that the cabbage carrying chain conveyor worked successfully. Considering the conveying speed 0.46m/sec of the pull up belt from the cabbages on the ground, the speed of cabbage carrying chain conveyor worked property in the range of 0.26m/sec to 0.36m/sec. The system allowed the operator to modify the position of cabbage slightly. Overall system worked successfully resulting into almost same capacity without severe damage to the cabbage as human did.

  • One of the major problems with the livestock industry is that in the summer, livestock will die from heat waves or infectious diseases. Under these circumstances, what livestock need is a proper indoor temperature and a regular sterilization system. Therefore, in this study, we developed a system that automatically controls the power of the fan according to the temperature inside the shaft, and a function that provides feed and sterilization on a regular basis, so that we could manage the toast efficiently. It also proposed the ability to automatically control the power of the fan, to display the temperature inside the shaft to mobile applications, and to provide food and sterilization. First, the function of controlling the power of the fan automatically turns the fan on when the temperature inside the shaft rises above a certain level. Conversely, if the temperature inside the shaft falls below a certain level, turn off the fan. Second, the function of the mobile application is to check the temperature inside the shaft. The third feeding function is periodically fed using a servo motor, and the feeding provided is delivered to livestock through a conveyor belt. Finally, the sterilization function is a function to sterilize livestock periodically using DC motor pump. The intelligent congratulatory functions proposed in this study may contribute to the health of livestock.
