Treefrog lateral line as a mean of individual identification through visual and software assisted methodologies

  • Background: Ecological research often requires monitoring of a specific individual over an extended period of time. To enable non-invasive re-identification, consistent external marking is required. Treefrogs possess lateral lines for crypticity. While these patterns decrease predator detection, they also are individual specific patterns. In this study, we tested the use of lateral lines in captive and wild populations of Dryophytes japonicus as natural markers for individual identification. For the purpose of the study, the results of visual and software assisted identifications were compared. Results: In normalized laboratory conditions, a visual individual identification method resulted in a 0.00 rate of false-negative identification (RFNI) and a 0.0068 rate of false-positive identification (RFPI), whereas Wild-ID resulted in RFNI = 0.25 and RFNI = 0.00. In the wild, female and male data sets were tested. For both data sets, visual identification resulted in RFNI and RFPI of 0.00, whereas the RFNI was 1.0 and RFPI was 0.00 with Wild-ID. Wild-ID did not perform as well as visual identification methods and had low scores for matching photographs. The matching scores were significantly correlated with the continuity of the type of camera used in the field. Conclusions: We provide clear methodological guidelines for photographic identification of D. japonicus using their lateral lines. We also recommend the use of Wild-ID as a supplemental tool rather the principal identification method when analyzing large datasets.

  • This paper introduces that livestock can be effectively managed by an individual electronic identification system. The proposed system was composed of the original code transmitter, receiver, personal computer, micro-processor, and RS485 telecommunications module. In the individual electronic identification system, the signal including encoded information of a milk-cow was transmitted from an original code transmitter to a micro-processor through RS485 telecommunications module. The transmitted signal can be successfully displayed in a personal computer. This system can be managed by 9999 individuals with a original code transmitter. The recognition rate of an individual electronic identification system was 98.5% and also auto-feeder operates very well. an individual electronic identification system was developed for automation of stockbreeding management. To automate the breeding management, it is necessary to obtain and analyze the individual information distinguished from others preferentially.

  • Forensic odontology and DNA typing in individual identification have been progressing rapidly and its significances has been increasing. But not all individual identification can be done by one single method solely. Therefore, understanding the advantage and disadvantage of each method is necessary to achieve forensic individual identification properly in each case for it to be applied promptly, economically and precisely.

Individual Identification and Breed Allocation with Microsatellite Markers: An Evaluation in Indian Horses

  • The capability of microsatellite markers for individual identification and their potential for breed assignment of individuals was evaluated in two Indian horse breeds. The strength of these individual assignment methods was also evaluated by increasing the number of loci in increments of five. The probability of identity of two random horses from the two breeds at all twenty five studied loci was as low as $1.08{\times}10^{-32}$ showing their suitability to distinguish between individual horses and their products. In the phylogenetic approach for individual assignment using Nei's genetic distances, 10.81% of horses associated with breed other than the major cluster of the source breed horses when all twenty five microsatellite loci were implemented. Similar results were obtained when the maximum likelihood approach for individual assignment was used. Based on these results it is proposed that, although microsatellite markers may prove very useful for individual identification, their utility for breed assignment of horses needs further evaluation.

  • In an animals, identification system has been widely used by ear tag with dummy code and blood typing for parernity. Also, genotyping methods were using for useful mean of individual identification for live animals. In the case of genotyping estimation of gene in population of korean native chicken. In this study, we tested for development of genetic markers used it possible to determination of individual identification system. The candidate genetic markers were used already bow 10 of microstalite DNA sequence information in chromosome No. 1 and 14. Result of analysis for genotyping, the number of alleles of those microstatelites DNA was shown minimal 3 to 12 and the heterozygote expression frequency range was shown from 0.617 to 0.862. In our result, effective number of allele for each microsatellites DNA was shown 3~7, and the accuracy of individual identification was shown nearly 100%, when used with 6 genetic marker. This study was about genotyping method for identification used specific genetic marker form microsatellite DNA in the brand marketing of korean native chicken. Our results suggest that genotyping method used specific genetic marker from microsatellite DNA might be very useful for determination of individual identification.

  • In this study, dldctronic identification system of individual dairy cow was developed for autocatization of stoxkvreeding management. To automize the breeding management, it is necessary to obtain and analyze the individual information distinguished from others perferentially. Electronic identification system can distinguish individual livestock from others with electromagnetic wave signal recognition system. Electoronic identification system consists of transmitter transmitting the oscillated signal and receiver set. The transmitted signal from transmitter clung to individual livestock is received from the receiving antenna and the signal in different according to the established value of the register. By distinct signal recieved from the reciever, wi can distinguish the identity of a livestock from others clearly. This system can manage $2^{12}$ individuals with a reciever theoretically. However in order to reduce the errors by analogous signal, this system uses only triple number and can manage 1365 individuals with a reciever practically. This system can be connevtted to Max 232 and microcomputer for the breeding management efficiently.

Establishment of an Individual Identification System Based on Microsatellite Polymorphisms in Korean Cattle (Hanwoo)

  • This study was conducted to establish an individual identification system comprising of 19 microsatellite markers located on different bovine autosomes. The markers were typed on 257 animals from five cattle breeds. In total, 112 alleles were detected from the genotyping of 19 microsatellite markers. The average heterozygosities ranged from 0.292 to 0.824 and the polymorphic information content (PIC) ranged from 0.274 to 0.817 in Hanwoo. We found that there were differences in allele frequencies in Hanwoo when compared with other cattle breeds. The calculated cumulative power of discrimination (CPD) was 99.999% when nine microsatellite loci were used for analysis in the individual identification system. Also the matching probability, the probability that two unrelated animals would show the same genotypes, was estimated to be $0.44{\times}10^{-9}$. Therefore, the nine markers used in this study will be used for individual identification in two million Hanwoo individuals.

  • Signal individual reconnaissance and identification is an extremely important research topic in non-cooperative domains such as electronic countermeasures and intelligence reconnaissance. Facing the characteristics of the complexity and changeability of current communication environment, how to realize radiation source signal individual identification under the low SNR conditions is an emphasis of research. A novel emitter individual identification method combined bi-spectrum analysis with wavelet feature is presented in this paper. It makes a feature fusion of bi-spectrum slice characteristics and energy variance characteristics of the secondary wavelet transform coefficient to identify MFSK signals under the low SNR (signal-to-noise ratios) environment. Theoretical analyses and computer simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has good recognition performance with the ability to suppress noise and interference, and reaches the recognition rate of more than 90% when the SNR is -6dB.

  • This study was conducted to establish an individual identification system in Hanwoo cattle. Samples of 33 Hanwoo individuals from Korean elite sire families were used. Thirteen major microsatellite markers were selected from alleles amplified, their frequencies, H(Heterozygosity) and PIC(Polymorphism Information Content) with Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Next, in order to evaluate the power of the markers selected on the individual animal identification, MP(Match probability) and R(Relatedness coefficient) with the percentage of animal incorrectly identified were computed. Finally nine microsatellite markers were selected and discussed.
