  • Two samples of the fruits of Piper longum have been chemically investigated. From one sample a new alkamide, pergumidiene and from other sample two rare alkamides, brachystamide B and piperderdine have been isolated. The known compounds, piperine, piperlonguminine, pellitorine, (+)-sesamine and 3-(3', 4', 5'-trimethoxyphenyl)-propionic acid were the common constituents of both the samples.

  • A methodology based on the concept of variable string length GA(VGA) is developed for determining automatically the number of hyperplanes and their appropriate arrangement for modeling the class boundaries of a given training data set in RN. The genetic operators and fitness functionare newly defined to take care of the variability in chromosome length. Experimental results on different artificial and real life data sets are provided.

  • The free amino acid content of Indian meal moth (Plodia interpunctella HUBNER) was analysed at various developmental stages by means of paper chromatography. 1) The free amino acids : present are alanine , arginine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, glycine, histidine, leucine, methionine, proline, serine, threonine, tyrosine and valine. 2) Proline was detectable only in the acid-hydrolyzed Indian meal moth. 3) Arginine was clearly detected only in the larva stage. 4) Tyrosine methionine and valine were increased in the pupa stage. 5) Serine, glycine and tyrosine were present in high concentration in all stages.

  • In continuation to the investigation initiated by Ferraz, Goodaire and Milies in [4], we provide an explicit description for the Wedderburn decomposition of finite semisimple group algebras of the class of finite groups G, such that $$G/Z(G){\simeq_-}C_2{\times}C_2$$, where Z(G) denotes the center of G.

  • Numerical investigations are carried out to study the mass flux and temperature distribution in a calandria using a 3-D RANS code. The computations made for simulations of flow and convective heat transfer with near-to working conditions. The work provides an estimate of the safe working limits of the heat dissipation by virtue of prediction of the 'hot spots' in the calandria. The work assumes significance for preliminary designs of the reactors and for detailed critical parametric analysis that would be otherwise more expensive.

  • Trypanothione reductase is an important target enzyme for structure-based drug design against Leishmania. We used homology modeling to construct a three-dimensional structure of the trypanothione reductase (TR) of Leishmania infantum. The structure shows acceptable Ramachandran statistics and a remarkably different active site from glutathione reductase(GR). Thus, a specific inhibitor against TR can be designed without interfering with host (human) GR activity.

  • The spatial spread of a disease in an SIRS epidemic model with immunity imparted by subclinical infection on a population has been considered. The incidence rate of infection and the rate of immunization are both of nonlinear type. The dynamics of the infectious disease and its endemicity in local and global sense have been investigated.
