  • A new planar metamaterial (MTM) with simultaneous negative values of permittivity (${\varepsilon}$) and permeability (${\mu}$) is proposed. Our MTM is composed of two identical copper patterns etched on both sides of dielectric laminate, which is very thin and easy to fabricate. Unlike conventional MTMs, the proposed structure shows a negative refractive index (NRI) behavior with respect to a normally incident wave. To explain the underlying principle of the NRI characteristics, an equivalent resonant circuit model based on surface current density distribution is investigated. An eigenmode analysis and a three-dimensional wave simulation for the stacked MTM prism are also performed to verify the existence of negative refraction. The experimental results from the transmission and reflection measurement ensure the validity of our design approach and show good agreement with the theoretically predicted effective medium parameters.

  • We predict the electromagnetic wave propagation in space environments using geometrical optics. The effective indices of the troposphere, stratosphere, and ionosphere are computed, and the reflection, refraction, and attenuation of electromagnetic waves in space environments are calculated based on the ray tracing technique and geometrical optics. The influence of the refractive index and loss of atmosphere and the incident angle of the antenna on electromagnetic wave propagation is discussed.

  • Via THz Time domain spectroscopy, the characterization of high conductive n-type, 1.31Ω cm silicon can be measured by directly analyzing the multiple reflections using Fabry-Perot theory. The magnitude and phase difference of total transmission show good agreement between theoretical and experimental values over a 2.5 THz frequency range with complex index of refraction and power absorption. The measured absorption and dispersion are strongly frequency-dependent, and all of the results are well fit by a Cole-Davidson type distribution.

  • The handicap for investigating the aero-optical effect focuses on the accurate prediction on the index refraction fluctuation or density fluctuation. In recent years, with the development of CFD techniques and optical experimental techniques, the comprehension have developed on the aero-optical transmitting effect in many kinds of complex flow. This study mainly introduces the optical aberration in compressible mixing layer. And then the debates about the mechanism of aero-optical effects and assessment of image blur also present.

  • Aero-optical effects induced by the flow around the optical window degrade the performance of the IR seeker, especially for the hypersonic flow. For the thermochemical non-equilibrium flow, index of refraction model and optical transmission calculation method are developed to predict the aero-optical effects. The optical distortion is discussed for the typical optical widow shape and flow condition. The influence on aero-optical effects is analyzed.

  • The scheelite occurred in Sang Dong mine are disseminated with a fine grain, and shelved pale blue or white color under the fluorescence. But among them, We can often observe the yellow fluorescent color mineral grains, which were called the powellite from the past time without any detail mineral study. I studied the characteristics of Sang-Dong scheelite and the so called powellite. In the result, the so called powellite is proved to be the molybdenum bearing scheelite in the view of specific gravity, index of refraction, chemical composition, other microscopic properties, and dressing. Such a scheelite is contained usually Zor 3% Mo, and oftenly 4 or 6% Mo, and fluorescent colors are pale yellow, leman yellow and chrome yellow.

  • The refractive index and dispersion in the (100-x)(0.6CaO.0.4Al2O3).xSiO2(x=0~30) glasses were investigated. As the amount of SiO2 increased, the refractive index decreased. The change of refractive index was attributed to the change of the molar refraction rather than the molar volume. When the amount of SiO2 was smaller than 20 mol%, the average electronic transition energy gaps(E0) and the electronic oscillator strengths(Ed) were about 10.9($\pm$0.1) nd 18($\pm$0.5)eV, respectively. However E0 and Ed of the glass (CAS30) with 30 mol% SiO2 increased to 12.63 and 19.89eV, respectively. The similar results was observed in the variation of Abbe Number. Abbe number of the glass in the range of 0~20 mol% SiO2 was about 46 and that of CAS30 increased to 60. The zero-material dispersion wavelength({{{{ lambda }}0) of pure calcium aluminate glass was 1.8 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. As the amount of SiO2 increased, the zero-material dispersion wavelength shifted to a shorter wavelength. {{{{ lambda }}0 of CAS30 was 1.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, that is currently using for the optical telecommunication system.

  • We studied the optical characteristics correlated with low dielectric constants of low-k SiOCH thin films through ellipsometry. The low-k SiOCH thin films were prepared by CCP-PECVD method using BTMSM(Bis-trimethylsilylmethane) precursors deposited on p-Si wafer. The Si-O-CHx, Si-O-Si, Si-CHx, CHx and Si-H bonding groups were specified by FTIR spectroscopic spectra, and the groups coupled with the nano-porous structural organic/inorganic hybrid-type of SiOCH thin films which has extremely low dielectric constant close to 2.0. The structural groups includes highly dense pore as well as ions in SiOCH thin films affecting to complex refraction characteristics of single layer on the p-Si wafer. The structural complexity originate the complex refractive constants of the films, and resulted the elliptical polarization of the incident linearly polarized light source of Xe-light source in the range from 190 nm to 2100 nm. Phase difference and amplitude ratio between s wave and p wave propagating through SiOCH thin film was studied. After annealing, the amplitude of p wave was reduced more than s wave, and phase difference between p and s wave was also reduced.

  • We study the focusing properties of a two-dimensional square-lattice photonic crystal (PC) comprising silica and germanium partitioned cylinders in air background. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) method with periodic boundary condition is utilized to calculate the dispersion band diagram and the FDTD method incorporating the perfectly matched layer boundary condition is employed to simulate the image formation. In contrast to the common square PCs in which the negative refraction effect occurs in the first photonic band without negative phase propagation, in our suggested model system, the frequency with negative refraction exists in the second band and in near-infrared region. In this case, the wave propagates with a negative phase velocity and the evanescent waves can be supported. We also discuss the dependency of the image resolution and its location on surface termination, source location, and slab thickness. According to the simulation results, spatial resolution of the proposed PC lens is below the radiation wavelength.

  • Several poly(6-dialkylamino-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-dithioxylene) derivatives were synthesized by the polycondensation of 6-dialkylamino-1,3,5-triazine-2.4-dithiol with m- and p-dibromide xylene in a cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide at $70^{\circ}C$ for 24h. The synthesized derivatives had refractive Indexes of 1.580~1.697 and had molar absorptivity of 97~196.6. In these derivatives, we knew that they are a polymer having high refraction indexes without double refraction because they contain triazine rings and sulfur atoms with high electron density.
