Power system needs to sustain high reliability due to its complexity and security. The reliability prediction method is usually based on independent failure. However, in practice, the Common Cause Failures(CCF) and Cascading failure occur to the facilities in power system as well as independent failures in many cases. The CCF and Cascading failure turn out the system collapse seriously in a wide range. Therefore to improve the reliability of the power system practically, it is required that the analysis is conducted by using the CCF and Cascading failure. This paper describes the CCF and Cascading failure modeling combined with independent failure. The incorporated model of independent failure, CCF and cascading failure is proposed and analyzed, and it is applied to the distribution power system in order to examine this method.
A plasticity-based concrete model is proposed. The failure surface is elliptic in the ${\sigma}-{\tau}$ stress space. Independent hardening as well as softening is assumed in tension, compression, and shear. The nonlinear inelastic action initiates from the origin in the ${\sigma}-{\varepsilon}$(${\tau}-{\gamma}$) diagram. Several parameters are incorporated to control hardening/softening regions. The model is incorporated into a nonlinear finite element program along with other classical models. Several examples are solved and the results are compared with experimental data and other failure criteria. "Reasonable results" and stable solutions are obtained for different types of reinforced concrete oriented structures.
The railway is required to be highly reliable, which carries a lot of passenger and baggage. Presently, the reliability prediction method is based on independent failure. If the common cause failure affecting many components simultaneously in a system occurs, the system has seriously an aptitude to be broken out. Therefore, for raising the reliability of the railway power system, it is introduced that the analysis is conducted to use the common cause failure. The common cause failure is modeled and is combined with independent failure. Furthermore in order to examine the method, it is applied to the railway power substation. If this method is used to the power system, the reliability of the railway power system will be highly improved.
An experimental investigation is carried out on the failure mechanism of foam concrete with cold formed steel double C-Channels embedment. The foam concrete is made of cement and fly ash with a compressive strength between 9 and 24 MPa with different densities. Forty-eight tests have been carried out in four groups of specimens with various embedment depths of the steel in the concrete. Four modes of failure are observed, which include the independent failure of the C-Channels with and without a concrete block inside the channel as well as the combined failure of the two channels, and the failure of the extrusion block. A theoretical model has been developed to understand the failure process. The peak compressive force applied onto the C-Channels that causes failure is calculated. It is concluded that the failure involves independent slippage between two C-Channels, and the steel and the foam concrete blocks inside the C-Channels. A method to calculate the peak force is also developed based on the test results. The calculations also show that the shear strength of the foam concrete is about 8% of the compressive strength with ${\alpha}$ coefficient of 0.4 between the steel and concrete.
We propose a Kolmogorov-Smirnov-type test for independence of paired failure times in the presence of independent censoring times. This independent censoring mechanism is often assumed in case-control studies. To do this end, we first introduce a process defined as the difference between the bivariate survival function estimator proposed by Wang and Wells (1997) and the product of the product-limit estimators (Kaplan and Meier (1958)) for the marginal survival functions. Then, we derive its asymptotic properties under the null hypothesis of independence. Finally, we assess the performance of the proposed test by simulations, and illustrate the proposed methodology with a dataset for remission times of 21 pairs of leukemia patients taken from Oakes(1982).

This paper introduces different vectors of the reliability equivalence factors of a series system consists of n independent and nonidentical components. The failure rates of the system components are assumed to be constant. The reliability function and mean time to failure are used as performances to derive the reliability equivalences of the system. The results presented here generalize those available in the literatures. Numerical study is given to explain how one can utilize the theoretical results obtained.

The three-dimensional strength behavior of compacted decomposed granite soil was studied using cubical triaxial tests with independent control of the three principal stresses. All specimens were loaded under conditions of principal stress direction fixed and aligned with the directions of compacted plane. For comparable test conditions, the major principal strain and volume strain to failure were smallest when the major principal stress acted perpendicular to the compacted plane. The opposite extremes were obtained when the major principal stress acted parallel to the compacted plane. In cubical triaxial tests with same b values and with ${\theta}$ values in one of three sectors of the octahedral plane, independent of the range of ${\theta}$, higher friction angles are obtained in tests with b greater than in triaxial compression tests in which b 0.0, Comparison between the results of the drained cubical triaxial tests on lksan compacted decomposed granite soil and the cross section of the Mohr-Coulomb failure surface as well as the cross section of the Mohr-Coulomb failure surface were made. Lade's isotropic failure criterion based on vertical specimens overestimates the strengths for tests performed with values of 0 between 90˚ and 1 50˚ the Mohr-Coulomb criterion generally underestimates the strengths of tests performed with values of ${\theta}$ between $0^{\circ}$ and $180^{\circ}$ except around the $120^{\circ}$.

An elasto-plastic stochastic finite element method is developed to evaluate the probability of failure of the underground structure. The Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria is adopted for yield condition. The material properties such as the elastic modulus and the cohesion are assumed to be statistically independent random variables which are modeled as spatial stochastic fields. The displacements around the excavated area and the probability of the failure are examined by varying the coefficient of variance for each variables. It is found that the developed procedure can provide the proper probabilistic information about the failure of the underground structure

Nuclear power plant's safety against seismic events is evaluated as risk values by probabilistic seismic safety assessment. The risk values vary by the seismic failure correlation between the structures, systems, and components (SSCs). However, most probabilistic seismic safety assessments idealized the seismic failure correlation between the SSCs as entirely dependent or independent. Such a consideration results in an inaccurate assessment result not reflecting real physical phenomenon. A nuclear power plant's seismic risk should be calculated with the appropriate seismic failure correlation coefficient between the SSCs for a reasonable outcome. An accident scenario that has an enormous impact on a nuclear power plant's seismic risk was selected. Moreover, the probabilistic seismic response analyses of a nuclear power plant were performed to derive appropriate seismic failure correlations between SSCs. Based on the analysis results, the seismic failure correlation coefficient between SSCs was derived, and the seismic fragility curve and core damage frequency of the loss of essential power event were calculated. Results were compared with the seismic fragility and core damage frequency of assuming the seismic failure correlations between SSCs were independent and entirely dependent.

A series of cubical triaxial tests with three independent principal stresses was per- formed on Baekma river sand( # 40~100). It was found that the major principal strain at failure remained approximately constant for b values larger than about 0.3 for both the drained and undrained condition, and thereafter increased as b value decreased. The test results showed that the direction of the strain increment at failure form acute angles with the failure surfaces for both the drained and undrained condition. The results were thus not in agreement with the normality condition from classic plasticity theory. Howev- er, it was found that the projections of the plastic strain increment vectors on the octahe- dral plane were perpendicular to the failure surface in that plane. Failure strength in terms of effective stress anlaysis was greatly influenced by the variation of intermediate principal stress and so was failure criterion. The effective stress failure surfaces for both the drained and undrained condition were estimated quite well by use of Lade's failure criterion.
