This paper presents a force/displacement sensing system to measure penetration depths and machining forces during pattering operation. This sensing system consists of a leaf spring mechanism and a capacitive sensor, which is mounted on a PZT driven in-feed motion stage with 1nm resolution. The sample is moved by a xy scanning motion stage with 5nm resolution. The constructed system was applied to nano indentation experiments, and the load-displacement curves of silicon(111) and aluminum were obtained. Then, the indentation samples were measured by AFM. Experimental results demonstrated that the developed system has the ability of preforming force/depth sensing indentations

In this study, EH36 is thick steel plate, which welded by auto $CO_2$ gas welding machine, has been applied on offshore filed. The specimen was examined by indentation tester and it was measured for fracture toughness at $18^{\circ}C$, $0^{\circ}C$, $-20^{\circ}C$ and $-45^{\circ}C$ by low temperature chamber, respectively. The absorbed energy was got on same temperature by Charpy impact tester. The weld surface was observed for watch of changed crystalline structure by optical microscope, and fracture surface of impact test specimen were observed by scanning electron microscope(SEM).
A combination of the instrumented indentation and 3D morphology measurement has been tried in order to perform a real-time property measurement of degraded materials in gas pipelines; three-dimensional indent morphologies were recorded using a reflective laser scanner after a series of insturmented indentations on three metallic specimens. Dimensions of the permanent deformation zone and contact boundary were analyzed from the cross-sectional profile over an remnant indent and used for estimating yield strength and hardness, respectively. Estimated yield strength was comparable with that from uniaxial tensile test and actual hardness implying material pile-up effects was lower than the calculated value from indentation curve by $20{\sim}30%$. It means that this 3D image analysis can explain the material pile-up effects on the contact properties. Additionally, a combined system of indentation and laser sensor was newly designed by modifying a shape of the indentation loading fixture.

This paper presents an ultra precision machining system using a high sensitive force sensing module to measure machining forces and penetration displacement in a tip-based nanopatterning. The force sensing module utilizes a leaf spring mechanism and a capacitive displacement sensor and it has been designed to provide a measuring range from 80 ${\mu}N$ to 8 N. This force sensing module is mounted on a PZT driven in-feed motion stage with 1 nm resolution. The sample can be moved by X-Y scanning motion stage with 5 nm resolution. In nano indentation experiments and patterning experiments, the machining forces were controlled and monitored by the force sensing module. Then, the patterned samples were measured by AFM. Experimental results demonstrated that the developed system can be used as an effective device in nano indentation and nanopatterning operation.
In this paper, the transient thermal and residual stress analysis of the welding of 9% Ni steel plates using the FEA software ABAQUS are presented. The 9% Ni steel plates are welded manually with welding consumables of 70% Ni based Inconel type super-alloys (YAWATA WELD B (M)), producing a multi-pass/multi-layer butt weld. For these materials, temperature dependant mechanical and thermal material properties are used in the analysis. The back gouging is considered in welding process simulation. The FE thermal results are validated by comparing the real fusion profile and heat affected zone (HAZ). In addition, the continuous indentation test was conducted to measure the strength of base metal, HAZ and weld metal.

MEMS technology with micro scale is complete system utilized as the sensor. micro electro device. The metallization of MEMS is very important to transfer the power operating the sensor and signal induced from sensor part. But in the MEMS structures local stress concentration and deformation is often happened by geometrical shape and different constraint on the metallization. Therefore. this paper studies the effect of supporting type and thickness ratio about thin film thickness of the substrate thickness for the residual stress variation caused by thermal load in the multi-layer thin film. Specimens were made from materials such as Al, Au and Cu and uniform thermal load was applied, repeatedly. The residual stress was measured by FEA and nano-indentation using AFM. Generally, the specimen made of Al induced the large residual stress and the 1st layer made of Al reduced the residual stress about half percent than 2nd layer. Specimen made of Cu and Au being the lower thermal expansion coefficient induce the minimum residual stress. Similarly the lowest indentation length was measured in the Au_Cu specimen by nano-indentation.

Metal/Ceramic structures have many attractive properties, with great potential for applications that demand high stiffness, as well as chemical and biological stability, thermal and electrical insulation. They are currently in use for mechanical and thermal protection in cutting tool and engine parts. With all their great advantage, ceramics suffer from one major problem they are brittle, and are especially susceptible to cracking from surface contacts. Delamination at the interfaces with adjacent layers is a particularly disturbing problem, and can cause premature failure of a composite system. so determination of adhesive properties of coating is one of the most important problems for the extension of the use of coated materials. In this work, mechanical characteristics of Interface of ceramic/Metal composites are evaluated by means of hardness test, indentation test apparent interfacial toughness and bonding strength test. The interface indentation test provides a relation between the applied load(P) and the length of the crack(a) created at the interface between the coating and the substrate.

YSZ layer containing nano-sized particles has been deposited on the commercial A1203 substrate by Electron Beam Physical Vapor Deposition (EB-PVD). The role of coating rnjcrostructures of YSZ to indentation damage is studied. The different coating microsouctures are prepared by varying the substrate temperatures from $600^{circ}C$ to $800^{circ}C$ during the deposition. Microhardness test and Hertzian indentation are conducted on the $YSZ/Al_{2}O_{3}$ layered systems. The damage and flilure behaviors have been investigated according to the effect of microstructures and indentation loads. With increasing the substrate temperature during EB-PVD, the overall grain sizes are coarser and more faceted, which microsoucture ultimately influences on the indentation behavior, thus, YSZ/Al_{2}O_{3}$ layered system prepared at the substrate temperature of $800^{circ}C$ shows relatively higher damage tolerance.

The carrying capacity of existing concrete structures is evaluated by the measured data from displacement and strain gauges for given loads and the results of numerical analysis that are compared with the measured ones. Consequently, this process could be accomplished in doing the direct measurement of residual stress on existing concrete. This study is concerned with the development of IITC (Instrumented Indentation Technique for Concrete) system which is based on the experimental stress analysis technique using non-destructive test method to evaluate the residual stress of concrete structures depending on the types of applied loadings in analysing indentation load - indentation depth curve derived experimentally on concrete surface. As a result, in this paper, almost all of systematized H/W and S/W were newly developed to estimate the residual stresses of concrete structures. Thus, the creation of new experimental equations for deriving residual stresses and automatical calculations of residual stresses using the empirical formula can lead to evaluate the structural resistances conveniently in the structures from construction phase to maintenance stage.

This paper deals with the determination of mechanical properties of various galvanized steel sheets that are used for fabricating automobile bodies; the instrumented indentation technique and finite element analysis were used for the determination. First, tensile tests were conducted to obtain the true stress-true strain curves of galvanized steel sheets with various thicknesses. Load-deformation curves were then obtained by using the instrumented indentation testing machine, and they were compared with load-deformation curves obtained by finite element analysis. Further, true stress-true strain curves were obtained at the optimal observation point by finite element analysis.
