In this study, to achieve the optimal conditions for mechanical hyper-fine pattern fabrication process, deformation behaviors of the materials during indentation were studied with numerical method by ABAQUS S/W. Brittle materials (Si, Pyrex glass 7740) were used as specimens, and forming conditions to reduce the elastic recovery and pile-up were proposed. The indenter was modeled a rigid surface. Minimum mesh sizes of specimens are 1-10nm. Comparisons between the experimental data and numerical result demonstrated that the finite element approach is capable of reproducing the loading-unloading behavior of a nanoindentation test.
Stainless steels are alloy steels with a nominal chromium content of at least 11 percent, with other alloy additions. The stainlessness and corrosion resistance of these alloy steels are attributed to the presence of a passive oxide film on the surface. When exposed to conditions like Resistance Spot Welding (RSW) process that remove the passive oxide film, stainless steels are subject to corrosive attack. And exposure to elevated temperatures causes oxidation (discoloration) of areas around indentation in Spot welding. In this paper, deal with the effect of shielding gas (Ar) preventing the corrosion, oxidation of stainless steel. And find the optimal shielding gas flow rate. In addition, suggest effective purging method for direct/indirect spot welding process.
The R-curve for in situ-toughened SiC-30 wt% TiC composites was estimated by the indentation-strength method and compared to that of monolithic SiC with toughened microstructure. Both materials exhibited rising R-curve behavior. The SiC-TiC composites, however, displayed better damage tolerance and higher resistance to crack growth. Total volume fractions of SiC key grains, which take part in toughening mechanisms such as crack bridging and crack deflection, were 0.607 for monolithic SiC ceramics and 0.614 for SiC-TiC composites. From the microstructural characterization and the residual stress calculation, it was inferred that this superior performance of SiC-TiC composites can be attributed to stress-induced microcracking at heterophase (SiC/TiC) boundaries and some contribution from carck deflection by TiC grains.
Pressureless-sintering of SiC with additions of yttria and alumina was studied. SiC could be densified to about 97% of its theoretical density at 185$0^{\circ}C$ which is about 20$0^{\circ}C$ below the normal sintering temperature of SiC with boron and carbon. Yttria and alumina formed intergranular liquid phases at the sintering temperature and promoted densification by the liquid phase sintering mechanism. The microstructure of sintered specimens was equiaxed and the liquid phase appeared to wet and dissolve SiC grains. The fracture toughness was measured by indentation method and found to be 5.3MPa.m1/2. Processing flaws near the surface of specimens appeared to be the major fracture origin during 3-point bending tests.
Indentation fracture method and 4-point bending test are carried out to measure the residual stresses and the bending strength, and to investigate the mechanism of fracture mechanics in the bonded interface of ceramic and metal. The results obtained are as follows ; 1) The fracture patterns of bonded materials shows that the delamlnatlon fracture of Interfaces is stablely developed from the interfaces of ceramic/active metallic bonded materials at the specimen center, and the fracture is unstablely generated through a refraction on the middle ceramic. 2) Distribution of residual stresses is quantitatively investigated on the ceramic side of bonded materials. 3) It Is found that the residual stresses of interface vertical direction are concentrated on the bonded interface at the ceramic side.

The effect of the alignment of the contacting bodies is concerned. Tilting of a body (indenter) is regarded as a mis-alignment. Recently developed method fur evaluating the contact normal traction is introduced and discussed, in which piecewise parabolic profile is considered as a generalized contact profile. Indentation by a wedge with rounded apex is solved as an example problem. In the case of partial slip regime, the variation of shear traction is examined during the closed path of shear force by using the efficient numerical technique. Concentration of the slip region is also investigated. By evaluating the energy dissipation from the contact surface, the effect of the mis-alignment-alignment on wear is discussed.

In the modern days, a galvannealed sheet steel(GA) instead of a cold rolled steel sheet has been widely used as an alternative to extend the life of automotive body. Accordingly, the mechanical properties of GA for automobiles were taken Into account and studied by comparing with the temperature variation on annealing in this study. To clarify the effect of surface features in the mechanical properties of GA, the several tests such as nanoindentation and FE-analysis were executed. For this goal use is made of the method of neural networks. The developed neural networks apply also to obtain reliable mechanical properties of the thin films. Load-displacement curve was computed by the analysis procedure and compared with experimental results.
Hockey games attracts many fans around the world. This game requires a specific type of ball and a stick for controlling the motion and trace of the ball. This control of motion involves hitting the ball which is a direct intensive dynamic loading. The impact load transferred directly to the hand of the player and in the professional player may cause long term medical problems. Therefore, dynamic motion of the stick should be understood. In the current study, we analyze the dynamic motion of a hockey stick under impact loading from a hockey ball. In doing so, the stick geometry is simplified as a beam structure and quasi-2D relations of displacement is applied along with classical linear elasticity theory for isotropic materials. The governing equations and natural boundary condition are extracted using Hamilton's principle. The final equations in terms of displacement components are solved using Galerkin's numerical method. The results are presented using indentation and contact force values for variations of different parameters.
This study investigates the microstructural properties of CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy (HEA) oxynitride thin film. The HEA oxynitride thin film is grown by the magnetron sputtering method using nitrogen and oxygen gases. The grown CoCrFeMnNi HEA film shows a microstructure with nanocrystalline regions of 5~20 nm in the amorphous region, which is confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). From the TEM electron diffraction pattern analysis crystal structure is determined to be a face centered cubic (FCC) structure with a lattice constant of 0.491 nm, which is larger than that of CoCrFeMnNi HEA. The HEA oxynitride film shows a single phase in which constituting elements are distributed homogeneously as confirmed by element mapping using a Cs-corrected scanning TEM (STEM). Mechanical properties of the CoCrFeMnNi HEA oxynitride thin film are addressed by a nano indentation method, and a hardness of 8.13 GPa and a Young's modulus of 157.3 GPa are obtained. The observed high hardness value is thought to be the result of hardening due to the nanocrystalline microstructure.
ZnS-$SiO_2$ composite is normally used for sputtering target. In recent years, high sputtering power for higher deposition rate often causes crack formation of the target. Therefore the target material is required that the sintered target material should have high crack resistance, excellent strength and a homogeneous microstructure with high sintered density. In this study, raw ZnS and ZnS-$SiO_2$ powders prepared by a 3-D mixer or high energy ball-milling were successfully densified by spark plasma sintering, the effective densification method of hard-to-sinter materials in a short time. After sintering, the fracture toughness was measured by the indentation fracture (IF) method. Due to the effect of crack deflection by the residual stress occurred by the second phase of fine $SiO_2$, the hardness and fracture toughness reached to 3.031 GPa and $1.014MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively.
