  • Replacement rates which shows the ratio of retirement income relative to preretirement income is used for a valuable evaluation measures while discussing social security benefit levels or the adequacy of retirement income. However, replacement rates has been only used for an index for evaluating benefit level at the time of retirement or specific retirement period in advanced research projects. This article analyzes how much the uncertainty of survival has an influence on retirement income, and shows replacement rates in conformity with the period of survival as an index. The researchers named this index lifetime income replacement rates. Analysis based on this index shows both life replacement income rates of 38.3% in men's case and of 41.1% in women's case while enrolled for 20years in three pension plans - national pension, retirement pension and individual annuity.

  • This study examined the impact of indebtedness on depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation. The data came from the 4th to 10th waves of the Korea Welfare Panel Study, collected from 2009 to 2015. Analyses were conducted using logistic regression for longitudinal data that combines the fixed effects and random effects approaches. The results show that a high level of indebtedness substantially increased the risk of depressive symptoms. The household leverage ratio-the ratio of total household debt to disposable personal income-of 400% or higher increased the odds of probable depression by 50% compared with the ratio under 100%. When the percentage of personal income that goes toward paying debt is 30% or higher, the odds of probable depression went up by 66% than when the percentage of debt payment of disposal income is under 10%. The findings suggest that debt relief agencies and their programs need to incorporate means to identify and address emotional stress related to the excessive debt. This study also contributed to enriching the literature on social determinants of health by demonstrating that indebtedness is an important socioeconomic characteristic affecting individuals' mental health.

  • This paper is an exploratory study aimed at finding factors that influence the penetration of cellular mobile telecommunications which have seen rapid development since 1980s. The paper tries to find economy and policy variables to influence the penetration by means of the multiple regression analysis. This paper shows a model that explain the penetration ratio of cellular service. The model is based on data from 39 upper middle income and 39 high income countries. The result shows that GDP per capita and the service period of the cellular mobile telecommunication have influenced on the penetration ratio positively, and the tariff of the service negatively. But, it is the open area to study the impact of the telecommunications policy changes on penetration, and to set a model which could explain the nation-specific characteristics.

  • This study is aimed to analyze the economic effectiveness (direct fishing income effect) of the marine afforestation project in Gangneung region. Based on the surveyed data, the production values and costs of the marine afforestation project are estimated and compared to determine the economic validity of the marine afforestation project. Results show that the B/C ratio, as an indicator of economic evaluation, is 1.30 with an interest rate of 5.5%, indicating that the marine afforestation project in Gangneung region would be economically feasible under the current production and market conditions. However, it is expected that the economic effectiveness would be increased when considering benefits of recreational fishing and greenhouse gas reduction from the marine afforestation project.

  • This paper aims to identify the class characteristics of tenants. To this end Patnaik's model is selected, because this model is most reasonable for sorting class structures of tenants. In his Model, "labor-exploitation criterion" is the main criterion for identifying class status. According to this criterion, there are five rural classes i.e. landlord, rich peasant, middle peasant, poor peasant, and full-time laborer. "Net labor ratio" is used for this purpose as empirical data handling. Net labor ratio is a ratio of net labor hired in to family labor, if hired in labor is more then this ratio is positive, and if hired out labor is more then the ratio is negative. Hired in and hired out labor includes not only direct labor but indirect labor such as labor employment or sales through rent. The results of this study are summarized as First, almost all tenants and owner cultivators are of the middle peasant class. Second, there are no rich peasant among the tenants, but 5% of owner cultivators are rich peasants, and 10% of tenants are poor peasants, owner cultivators are 1%. Third, the net: labor ratio of tenants is -0.211, and that of owners is 0.143. There are differences between tenants and owner cultivators even if land is much the same, and owner cultivators net labor ratio is positive except in the land size of 0.3-0.5ha, but that of the tenants' is negative. Fourth, proto-labor poor peasants earned 25% of income from labor, compared with under 10% of proto-tenant poor passant's. Rent to income ratio is almost 60% of proto-tenant, 27% of proto-labor among poor peasants.

  • This study is intended to explore an income level necessart for the old-age by income Status. Firstly, it is verified whether there is significant difference between old-age and working age or not. Secondly, if their difference is found, it will be identified that it is determined by certain factors. Thirdly, it is brought out needful income level for the old-age living through analysing old-age consumption expenditure level over working age. The results in this research are as follows. Firstly, there is a significant difference between old-age and working age. Secondly, the major factors which generated difference between old-age and working age consumption expenditure are income, household size, and age. Thirdly, the income level necessary for oldage living is on average 61 %. By income status, it is 90-100% for low income status, 60-70% for middle income status, 50-60% for high income status.

  • Objectives : This study aimed to verify the association between wealth or income level and health status after adjusting for other socio-economic position (SEP) indicators among Korean adults aged 45 and over. Methods : Data were obtained from the 1st wave of Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing (households: 6,171, persons: 10,254). We used self-rated health status and activities of daily living (ADLs) as dependent variables. Explanatory variables included both net wealth measured by savings, immovables, the other valuated assets and total income including pay, transfer, property and so on. Binary logistic regression was conducted to examine the relationships. Also, in order to determine the relative health inequality across economic groups, we estimated the relative index of inequality (RII). Results : The inequality of health status was evident among various wealth and income groups. The wealthiest group (5th quintile) was much healthier than the poorest group, and this differential increased with age. Likewise, higher income was associated with better health status among the elderly. However, these effects, as measured by the odds ratio and RII, showed that wealth was more important in determining health status of elderly people. Conclusions : This study suggests that economic capability plays a significant role in determining the health status and other health-related problems among the elderly. Particularly, our results show that health status of the aged is related more closely to the individual s wealth than income.

  • We measure Environmental Efficiency (EE) based on CO2 in four income groups from 1998 to 2018, using the Meta Stochastic Frontier Analysis method by Input Distance Function. Our results showed that economic growth and energy consumption would increase carbon dioxide emissions, and increasing labor and capital input will reduce it. Moreover, we compared Group Environmental Efficiency (GEE), Meta Environmental Efficiency (MEE), and Environmental Gap Ratio (EGR). The results showed that GEEs were be overestimated. Furthermore, the MEE showed a downward trend during this period. The lower-middle-income group had the highest EGR performance. High-income and upper-middle-income groups showed less efficiency in MEE and EGR. To improve environmental efficiency, we must reduce fossil fuels and find more scientific and technological ways to solve existing environmental problems as soon as possible.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the structure of financial risk components of households. The financial risk of households was assumed to be composed of risk knowledge, risk attitude and risk management behavior. For this study, a questionnaire was developed and distributed to 700 households in Seoul and Kwangju, and there were 495 responses with usable data. The findings showed that income stability had a positive relationship with the level of risk knowledge and risk attitude. Income stability, household debt, age of the youngest child and risk knowledge were found to have direct effects on risky vs. non-risky asset ratio. Income stability, savings, age of the youngest child and risk knowledge also had significant effects on the number of risky assets owned by households. Risk knowledge was the most important determinant of risk management behavior.

  • Settlement problems in rural area are gradually becoming more intense due to decreasing agricultural income led by market globalization. Rural tourism is considered as one of alternatives for complementing agricultural income. In this study, we analyzed the relation of rural development project and the influx of population on green tourism villages. Results show that the influx of population in rural area is related with project cost, tourism income, visiting numbers, and ratio of labor population. With these results, we modified rural population model for estimating future rural population. Adapted result to Buraemi village by modified model showed that estimation error can be decreased from 7.23% to 0.95%.
