  • In this paper, the incoherent reverberation model based on coupled normal mode method is presented. In the range dependent environment, one way coupled normal mode method is used to calculate the pressure from a source to a scatterer patch and the pressure from a scatterer patch to a receiver. For the computational efficiency, the sound propagation from a source/receiver to the scatterer patch is assumed to occur only in the 2D plane where a source/receiver and scatterer patch are located. For the model verification, problems of the reverberation modeling workshop I and II sponsored by the US office of Naval Research are calculated and the results are compared with the incoherent reverberation model results based on the ray method.

  • We have studied the effects of incoherent pumping on EIA at the transition between the $F_g=2$ ground state and the $F_e=3$ excited state in $^{85}Rb\;D_1$-line. Generally, the studies about EIA have been done in the cycling transition, where the population has no loss to other states. In the case of EIA by using the $^{85}Rb\;D_1$ transition line, the population is transferred to the other hyperfine state due to optical pumping. We incoherently pumped the atoms from $F_g=3\;to\;F_g=2$ with the pumping beam, which is resonant at the transition from $F_g=3\;to\;F_g=2$. We were able to observe the effects of incoherent pumping depending on the power and the polarization of the pumping beam.

  • In this paper, a new algorithm is proposed for resolving multiple broadband incoherent sources incident on a uniform linear array. The proposed method dose not require any initial estimates for finding the transformation matrix, while the Coherent Signal-Subspace Method(CSM) proposed by Wang and Kaveh requires preliminary estimates of multigroup source location. An effective procedure is derived for finding the enhanced spectral density matrix at the center frequency using signal enhancement approach and then constructing a common signal subspace by selecting a unitary transformation matrix which is obtained via rotation of signal subspace method. The proposed approach is found to provide superior performance relative to that obtained with the CSM method in terms of sample bias of direction-of-arrival estimates.

  • This article presents a brief overview of an important area of neutron scattering: the general principles and techniques of elastic, quasielastic and inelastic scattering from a system composed predominately of incoherent scatterers. The methodology is then applied to the study of water, specifically when it is confined in nanometer-scale environments. The confined water exhibits uniquely anomalous properties in the supercooled state. It also nourishes biological functions, and supports essential chemical reactions in living systems. We focus on recent investigations of water encapsulated in nanoporous silica and carbon nanotubes, hydrated water in proteins and water or hydroxyl species incorporated in nanostructured minerals. Through these scientific examples, we demonstrate the advantages derived from the high sensitivity of incoherent neutron spectroscopy to hydrogen atom motions and hydrogen-bond dynamics, aided by rigorous data interpretation method using molecular dynamics simulations or theoretical modelling. This enables us to probe the inter-/intramolecular vibrations and relaxation/diffusion processes of water molecules in a complex environment.

  • In this paper, we demonstrated, through experiment and numerical reconstruction, that the bias and the conjugate image, which are main drawbacks in incoherent holography, can be removed. By using wave plates of the modified triangular interferometer, which was made by adding simple passive devices to the conventional triangular interferometer, we adjusted the relative phase differences of two optical waves traveling in clockwise and counterclockwise. In this way, we obtained four intensity patterns, and then by manipulating the four intensity patterns electronically we obtained the complex hologram without bias and the conjugate image. Comparing numerical reconstruction results of the complex hologram with numerical reconstruction results of the hologram obtained from the conventional triangular interferometer, we demonstrated that bias and the conjugate image can be removed using the modified triangular interferometer.

  • Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) has been applied to the Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) data of turbulent channel flow. DWT splits the turbulent flow into two orthogonal parts, one corresponding to coherent structures and the other to incoherent background flow. The coherent structure is extracted from not vorticity field but velocity's since the channel flow is not isoropic. By comparing DWT's result of channel flow with that of isotropic flow, it is shown that coherent structure maintains the properties of original channel flow. The velocity field of coherent structures can be represented by few wavelet modes and that these modes are sufficient to reproduce the velocity probability density function (PDF) and the energy spectrum over the entire inertial range. The remaining incoherent background flow is homogeneous, has small amplitude, and is uncorrelated. These results are compared with those obtained for the same compression rate using large eddy simulation (LES) filtering. In contrast to the incoherent background flow of DWT, the LES subgrid scales have a much larger amplitude and are correlated, which makes their statistical modeling more difficult.
