  • The blockage rate for three kinds of nets commonly used in agricultural facilities was assessed by using the image acquisition and its relevant processing. By using both empirical relations presented by Idel'chik and Richards and Robinson, and the blockage rate obtained from the image processing, the pressure drop through the nets was predicted and also compared with wind tunnel experiment results. The results of the study showed that the blockage rate of the net was discriminated according to such factors as the magnitude of nets, the existence of inside threads, the thickness and number of threads. In addition, the blockage rate for the incident angle of 0° when the wind blew at the front had the range of 0.22-0.29 (0.22-0.32 when considering whole incident angles from 0° to 45° by 15°). For the nets with the blockage rate of about 30% or below, the prediction by the empirical relations of by Idel'chik and Richards and Robinson showed a little higher pressure drop overall than that of the wind tunnel test, but the use of the empirical relations and the blockage rate could be thought of as providing effectively meaningful guidelines for the safe design of agricultural facilities including nets because the wind tunnel test has been tedious and expensive. Further research and potential application on the prediction technique of the pressure drop, regarding both a subtle deformation by the wind and manufacturing methods with regard to the level of knots and the existence of inside threads, needs to be done for the nets with higher blockage rate.

  • The mass loss rate and heat release rate of puzzle mats were analysed using variable external irradiation level. Five samples of puzzle mat were tested in this study : Type A, B, C, D and E. Type A, B and C are all general grades whereas Type D and E are both Flame retardant grades. Incident heat fluxs of $25kW/m^2$, $35kW/m^2$, $50kW/m^2$ and $70kW/m^2$ were selected for these experiments. All samples were tested in the horizontal orientation and were wrapped in a single layer of aluminum foil. Each sample was nominally 20mm thick and 100mm square. The combustion heat and mass loss rate were carried out from Oxygen bomb calorimeter and mass loss calorimeter according to ISO 5660-1 respectively. Heat release rates were calculated using the equation ${\dot{Q}}=A_f{\dot{m}}"_X{\Delta}H_c=0.75A_f{\dot{m}}"{\Delta}H_c$. where $A_f$ is the horizontal burning area of the sample, $\dot{m}"$ is mass loss rate per unit area, ${\Delta}H_c$ is complete heat of combustion and 0.75 is combustion efficiency.

  • Intelligent transport services on smart roads tend to have a problem at the stage of benefit-cost analysis that can not secure economic feasibility of the new services which increase early investment cost on building its infrastructure. It is expected that the number of road accidents, 'Incident/Accident', will decline through various safety services using intelligent safety facilities, intelligent transport management and so on, and that traffic congestion will also decrease. The effect of traffic congestion reduction could be the benefit by safety improvement, however current investment-analysis process in Korea does not appropriate it as a benefit. This study estimated road blocking time with 'Incident/Accident' classification and highway accident data of past three years. It also developed a generalized model by a regression analysis with a microscopical simulation. Furthermore, it suggested necessary units on quantitative analysis in order to make the developed model applicable to investment evaluation. As a result of applying the developed model to Smart-Highway Project, it showed that total safety improvement benefit is about 139 billion dollars over 30 years when it is supposed that accident decreasing rate by smart safety facilities is 10%.

  • The theory is based on two thermodynamic equations for the air mass in the air column and bydrodynamic equation for the relation between the response of the air in the water column and the incident wave. The numerical model is experimented in a two dimensional water tank and the caisson model with sloped front wall is tested in the large towing tank.

  • The reaction between CH3 radicals and H2 was investigated behind incident shock waves at temperatures between 1308 and 1825 K by following the consumption of CH3 using a time resolved UV absorption method at 213.9 nm. The rate coefficient expression 1.10 X 1013 exp(-7370 K/T) cm3mol-1s-1 for the reaction of CH3 with H2 was derived.

  • In this study, current status of Korean hazard mitigation guideline for tunnel operation is summarized. It shows that requirement for CCTV installation has been gradually stricted and needs for tunnel incident detection system in conjunction with the CCTV in tunnels have been highly increased. Despite of this, it is noticed that mathematical algorithm based incident detection system, which are commonly applied in current tunnel operation, show very low detectable rates by less than 50%. The putative major reasons seem to be (1) very weak intensity of illumination (2) dust in tunnel (3) low installation height of CCTV to about 3.5 m, etc. Therefore, an attempt in this study is made to develop an deep-learning based tunnel incident detection system, which is relatively insensitive to very poor visibility conditions. Its theoretical background is given and validating investigation are undertaken focused on the moving vehicles and person out of vehicle in tunnel, which are the official major objects to be detected. Two scenarios are set up: (1) training and prediction in the same tunnel (2) training in a tunnel and prediction in the other tunnel. From the both cases, targeted object detection in prediction mode are achieved to detectable rate to higher than 80% in case of similar time period between training and prediction but it shows a bit low detectable rate to 40% when the prediction times are far from the training time without further training taking place. However, it is believed that the AI based system would be enhanced in its predictability automatically as further training are followed with accumulated CCTV BigData without any revision or calibration of the incident detection system.

  • To accurately estimate the rate of sediment transport in shallow water bodies, it is necessary to investigate the irregular waves transformation characteristics and nearshore currents produced by random sea waves. Most of studies on numerical models for nearshore currents are based on the theory of monocromatic waves and thus, very few nearshore models take into account the effect of irregularities in the hight, period and directional spreading of incident waves. The numerical simulation model for nearshore currents used in this paper considers the effect of irregularities of incident waves, based on Individual Wave Analysis. The computational results are compared and shown in a reasionable agreement with the experimental data.

  • Hydralic model experiments for permeable breakwaters with three different shapes of cap concrete were carried out in a two-dimensional wave channel to investigate the shape effects of cap concrete on transmission rate of the incident waves over the breakwaters. The model test results show that energy damping effects are significant in the following order; cap concrete with dissipation holes and apron, cap concrete with apron only, and cap concrete without dissipation holes and apron. It is concluded that the significant damping effects are due to energy dissipation of the incident wave as they pass through the holes and the apron.

  • In this study, the 1/35 reduced-scale model experiment were conducted to investigate designed ventilation effect on the smoke movement at rescue station fire in railway tunnel. A model tunnel with 2 mm thick, 10 m long, 0.19 m high and 0.26 m was made by using Froude number scaling law. The cross-passages installing escape door at the center were connected between incident tunnel and rescue tunnel. The n-heptane pool fires with heat release rate 698.97W were used as fire source. The fire source was located at the center and portal of incident tunnel as worst case. A operating ventilation system extracted smoke amount of 0.015 cms(cubic meters per second). The smoke temperature and CO gas concentration in cross-passage were measured to verify designed ventilation system. The result showed that, at center fire case without ventilation, smoke did not propagate to rescues station. In portal fire case, smoke spreaded to rescues station without ventilation. But smoke did not propagated to rescues station with designed ventilation.

  • We developed the ion plating system, consisted of the Facing Target Magnetron Sputtering System and the r.f, electrode of the coil type, which was available to control the reactive and the adhesion between thin film and substrate, and studied about the discharge characteristics and the optimum condition in order to form the high quality thin film. The characteristics of discharge and plasma was measured as Double Probe and Electrostatic Retarding Grid Analyzer. The incident ion energy on the substrate was increased as the increasing r.f power, bias voltage. By the r.f electrode, the ionization rate of the sputtered particles was about 75%, and the mean incident ion energy depend on the value which was difference between the plasma potential and biased substrate potential.
