  • The process of recognizing a vehicle involves detection of the vehicle, recognition of the vehicle model, and identification of the vehicle. The process of vehicle identification involves identification of the vehicle itself, such as by recognition of the license plate on the vehicle. In this paper the method involves the use of a beam splitter to divide incident rays into two directions, a transmitted beam and a reflected beam of different light intensities, and synthesizing two captured images using CCD devices from each beam, thus producing fluctuation-free images of a wide dynamic range even when the subject is moving. A prototype license plate recognition system was also developed using the experimental sensing device. The system achieved a 98.7% recognition rate on 466 images of moving vehicles, which demonstrates its effectiveness as a license plate recognition system.

  • Dye sensitized solar cells(DSC) have been very economical and easy method to convert solar energy to electricity. DSC can reach low costs in future outdoor power applications. However, to commercialize the DSC, there are still many shortages to overcome such as a low efficiency in a large size DSC. In this study, DSCs were fabricated by an electrospray coating method for the $TiO_2$ thin film. They were compared with DSCs prepared by conventional coating methods. We conducted an experiment to obtain the optimized parameters of voltage, flow rate, incident angle and distance in the electrospray method. After we manufactured $TiO_2$ film using that way, we could analyze the characteristics of DSC through SEM, UV curve, EIS.

  • In order to develop a highly sensitive infrared sensor, it is necessary to develop techniques for decreasing the rate of heat absorption and the transition of the absorption wavelength to a longer wavelength, both of which can be induced by decreasing the pixel size of the bolometer. Therefore, in this study, $1{\mu}m$ hole-arrays with a subwavelength smaller than the incident infrared wavelength were formed on the amorphous silicon-based microbolometer pixels in the absorber, which consisted of a TiN absorption layer, an a-Si resistance layer and a SiNx membrane support layer. We demonstrated that it is possible to reduce the thermal time constant by 16% relative to the hole-patternless bolometer, and that it is possible to shift the absorption peak to a shorter wavelength as well as increase absorption in the $4-8{\mu}m$ band to compensate for the infrared long-wavelength transition. These results demonstrate the potential for a new approach to improve the performance of high-resolution microbolometers.

  • This paper presents a numerical investigation of the deflagration to detonation transition (DDT) of flame acceleration by a shock wave filled with an ethylene-air mixture in bent tube. A model consisting of the reactive compressible Navier-Stokes equations and the ghost fluid method (GFM) for complex boundary treatment is used. A various intensities of incident shock wave simulations show the generation of hot spots by shock-flame interaction and the accelerated flame propagation due to geometrical effect. Also the first detonation occurs nearly constant chemical heat release rate, 20 MJ/($g{\cdot}s$). Through our simulation's results, we concentrate the complex confinement effects in generating strong shock wave, shock-flame interaction, hot spot and DDT in pipe.

  • The propagation of light radiation in a turbid medium is an important problem that confronts dosimetry of therapeutic laser delivery and the development of diagnostic spectroscopy. Scattered light is measured as a function of the position(distance r, depth z) between the axis of the incident beam and the detection spot. Turbid sample yields a very forward-directed scattering pattern at short range of position from source to detector, whereas the thicker samples greatly attenuated the on-axis intensity at long range of position. The portions of scattered light reflected from or transmitted throughphantom depend upon internal reflectance and absorption properties of the phantom. Monte Carlo simulation method for modelling light transport in tissue is applied. It uses the photon is moved a distance where it may be scattered, absorbed, propagated, internally reflected, or transmitted out of tissue. The photon is repeatedly moved until it either escape from or is absorbed by the phantom. In order to obtain an optimum therapeutic ratio in phantom material, optimum control the light energy fluence rate is essential. This study is to discuss the physical mechanisms determining the actual light dose in phantom. Permitting a qualitative understanding of the measurements. It may also aid in designing the best model for laser medicine and application of medical engineering.

  • Laser induced incandescence, LII, recently developed technique for measuring soot concentration in flames, can overcome most of limitations of conventional laser extinction measurement. In this study, experiments were performed to investigate the effect of laser intensity, detection wavelength, and also laser beam quality on both LII signal at a particular position and peak-to-centerline LII signal ratio. The results of LII signal with increasing laser intensity shows its near-independence of laser intensity once threshold level of laser intensity has been reached. However, this near-independence depends on laser beam quality and the incident optical setup. The peak-to-centerline LII signal ratio slowly but continuously increases with laser power. This fact is due to the dependence of LII signal on particle mean diameter. LII signal is attenuated during it passes through the flame containing soot particles. The attenuation rate is inversely proportional to detection wavelength. In this study, LII signal at 680 nm band is 10% greater than the signal at 400 nm band.

  • The PSD(Position Sensitive Detector) is a sensor for detecting the position of incident light. Because of its various advantages, it is used for position and angle sensing, optical range finders, laser displacement sensing, and etc. In the previous study of the position finding system, the laser tracking robot is developed. Small data rate and unidirectionality is the characteristics of data communication both DSP-based pan/tilt control board and the robot. If we can transmit data to the target using PSD sensor and laser diode module, there is no need for communication devices such as the bluetooth and wireless module. For this reason, this paper presents the new method for data transmission. Transmit data using RS-232 is modulated by a VTF(Voltage To Frequency) converter The laser diode module transmits the modulated data. And then the PSD sensor receive that data. Demodulation process is accomplished by the system which is consisted with trans-impedance amplifier, FTV(Frequency To Voltage) converter, and etc.

  • The reaction between $CH_3$ radicals and $O_2$ was investigated in incident shock waves at temperatures between 1390 and 2250 K and densities from 1.5 to 5.3 mol/$m^{+30/3}$ using azomethane as a source of methyl radicals by following the consumption of CH3 radicals with time resolved UV absorption measurements at 213.9 nm. The rate constant expression $k_2=1.35{\times}10^{12}\;exp( - 5900 K/T)\;cm^3 mol^{-1}s^{-1}$ for the reaction of $CH_3 + O_2{\rightarrow}CH_2O + OH$ was derived.

  • Hayabusa, the Japanese asteroid sample returning mission, acquired more than 1400 scientific images of its target asteroid (25143) Itokawa using the Asteroid Multi-band Imaging Camera (AMICA). It took images at a wide coverage of the phase angle a (Sun-Itokawa-Hayabusa) from $a{\sim}0^{\circ}$ to ${\sim}35^{\circ}$, providing a unique opportunity for studying the opposition effect (a sharp surge in brightness of asteroidal surface). Here we present a study of the opposition effect on Itokawa using the AMICA multi-band data. We found that (1) the opposition strength near the opposition is independent of the incident/emission angles of the light, also (2) it weakly depends on the wavelength showing the strongest surge around 0.7 um, and (3) the reflectance increases linearly at a>$1.5^{\circ}$ while nonlinearly at a<$1.5^{\circ}$ as approaching the opposition point. In particular, we noticed that the increasing rate has a correlation with the reflectance in the nonlinear domain whereas no detectable correlation with the reflectance in the linear domain. From these results, we conjecture that the coherent backscattering opposition effect is a dominant mechanism for the nonlinear opposition surge at a<$1.5^{\circ}$ while shadow hiding opposition effect is responsible for the linear opposition surge at a>$1.5^{\circ}$.

  • At present, an important research area is the search for materials that are compatible with CMOS technology and achieve a satisfactory response rate and modulation efficiency. A strong local field of graphene surface plasmon polariton (SPP) can increase the interaction between light and graphene, reduce device size, and facilitate the integration of materials with CMOS. In this study, we design a new modulator of SPP-based cycle branch graphene waveguide. The structure comprises a primary waveguide of graphene-$LiNbO_3$-graphene, and a secondary cycle branch waveguide is etched on the surface of $LiNbO_3$. Part of the incident light in the primary waveguide enters the secondary waveguide, thus leading to a phase difference with the primary waveguide as reflected at the end of the branch and interaction coupling to enhance output light intensity. Through feature analysis, we discover that the area of the secondary waveguide shows significant localized fields and SPPs. Moreover, the cycle branch graphene waveguide can realize gain compensation, reduce transmission loss, and increase transmission distance. Numerical simulations show that the minimum effective mode field area is about $0.0130{\lambda}^2$, the gain coefficient is about $700cm^{-1}$, and the quality factor can reach 150. The structure can realize the mode field limits of deep subwavelength and achieve a good comprehensive performance.
