  • In this paper, reflection and RCS characteristic of the EGS(Electromagnetic Gradient Surface) due to incident angle and polarization is analyzed. Incident angle, ${\theta}_i$, is rotated from $0^{\circ}$ to $50^{\circ}$ with $10^{\circ}$ steps and perpendicular and parallel polarization of incident wave are also considered each incident angle. Reflection and RCS characteristic is not much affected by variation of polarization for normal incidence(${\theta}_i=0^{\circ}$). Reflection pattern has different characteristic due to variation of incident angle and polarization but the EGS has about 2 dB of RCS difference due to polarization in RCS characteristic.

  • The amount of incident rays over inclination according to direction has been widely utilized as important data in installing solar thermal systems. To optimize the incident solar radiation, the slope, that is the angle between the plane surface in question and the horizontal, and the solar azimuth angles are needed for these solar thermal systems. This is because the performance of the solar thermal systems in much affected by angle and direction of incident rays. Recognizing that factors mentioned above are of importance, actual experiment on the moving route of the sun have been performed in this research to obtain the angle of inclination with which the maximum incident rays can be absorbed. After all, the standard for designing highly optimized solar thermal systems will be provided for designers and employees working in the solar collector related industries.

To maximize the incident beam radiation, the slope, which is the angle between the plane of the surface in question and the horizontal, and the solar azimuth angles are needed for these solar thermal systems. This is because the performance of the solar thermal system is much affected by angle and direction of incident rays. Recognizing those factors mentioned above are of importance, actual experiment has been performed in this research to obtain the angle of inclination with which the maximum incident rays can be absorbed. The results obtained in this research could be used in installing optimal solar flat-plate collectors.

  • The conversion efficiency of solar cells depending on incident angle of light is important for building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) applications. The quantum efficiency is the ratio of the number of charge carriers collected by the solar cell to the number of photons of a given energy shining on the solar cell. The analysis of angle dependence of quantum efficiencies give more information upon the variation of power output of a solar cell by the incident angle of light. The variations in power output of solar cells with increasing angle of incidence is different for the type of cell structures. In this study we present the results of the quantum efficiency measurement of single-crystalline silicon solar cells and a-Si:H thin-film solar cells with the angle of incidence of light. As a result, as the angle of incidence increases in single-crystalline silicon solar cells, quantum efficiency at all wavelength (300~1,100 nm) of light were reduced. But in case of a-Si:H thin-film solar cells, quantum efficiency was increased or maintained at the angle of incidence from 0 degree to about 40 degrees and dramatically decrease at more than 40 degrees in the range of visible light. This results of quantum efficiency with increasing incident angle were caused by haze and interference effects in thin-film structure. Thus, the structural optimization considering incident angle dependence of solar cells is expected to benefit BIPV.

  • Characteristics of breakup of a liquid droplet impinging on a hot surface has been investigated experimentally by using decane fuel. Factors influencing droplet breakup are surface temperature, impinging velocity, droplet diameter and incident angle. Droplets impinging on a hot surface begins to breakup at $220{\sim}235^{\circ}C$. This temperature varies with impinging Velocity, droplet diameter and incident angle. For wall temperature of $220{\sim}245^{\circ}C$ and above $270^{\circ}C$, breakup probability increases as impinging velocity increases showing S shape curve. For $245{\sim}265^{\circ}C$, a local minimum heat transfer rate occurs. In this temperature range, breakup probability shows nonmonotonous behavior as functions of impinging velocity. As droplet diameter decreases, impinging velocity required for droplet breakup increases. An optimum impinging angle for droplet breakup exists which are found to be about $75^{\circ}$.

  • This study aims to assess the effect of postulated seismic loads on the structural integrity of a spent nuclear fuel dry storage facility. Firstly, three-dimensional modal and response spectrum analyses were carried out. With regard to the latter analysis, the effect of incident angles against two horizontal and one vertical response spectra was also considered. Results showed that even though two critical locations were predicted at the longitudinal axis central part of upper flow path as well as the end discontinuity part of upper and lower flow paths connector, their maximum principal stress values were less than the tensile strength. Moreover, since the influence of vertical angle was 87% higher than that of horizontal angle in particular, which should be carefully handled to demonstrate integrity of the facility.

  • In a long-span bridge which is constructed on soft soil, it is requested to make a plan considering soil-structure interaction, and soil-structure interaction is partially under consideration at the actual bridge plan. Many researches on dynamic behavior of a bridge affected by soil-structure interacting have been accomplished, but it is difficult to estimate dynamic behavior of a bridge on soft soil accurately because of many uncertainties. This paper presents the results about dynamic response of a long-span suspension bridge in the site composed of soft soil considering incident angle of input ground motion. The effect of soft soil was evaluated by the use o computer program SASSI and a long-span suspension bridge was modeled by finite element program MIDAS. The effect of incident angle of input ground motion was investigated on the dynamic response of a long-span bridge.

  • The present paper investigates the influence of the orientation of the ground-motion reference axes, the seismic incident angle and the seismic intensity level on the inelastic response of asymmetric reinforced concrete buildings. A single storey asymmetric building is analyzed by nonlinear dynamic analyses under twenty bi-directional ground motions. The analyses are performed for many angles of incidence and four seismic intensity levels. Moreover three different pairs of the horizontal accelerograms corresponding to the input seismic motion are considered: a) the recorded accelerograms, b) the corresponding uncorrelated accelerograms, and c) the completely correlated accelerograms. The nonlinear response is evaluated by the overall structural damage index. The results of this study demonstrate that the inelastic seismic response depends on the orientation of the ground-motion reference axes, since the three individual pairs of accelerograms corresponding to the same ground motion (recorded, uncorrelated and completely correlated) can cause different structural damage level for the same incident angle. Furthermore, the use of the recorded accelerograms as seismic input does not always lead to the critical case of study. It is also shown that there is not a particular seismic incident angle or range of angles that leads to the maximum values of damage index regardless of the seismic intensity level or the ground-motion reference axes.

  • Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) have been proposed as a substitute for overcoming the limitation of Si solar cells because DSC has the various applications using advantages of DSC such as low cost, transparency and flexibility. Although some people point out low efficiency of DSC as the important problem at present, general views say that actually cumulative power is not insufficient as compared with Si solar cell. Therefore, we analyzed the characteristics of both cells according to the change of incident angle in this study. The insensibility about the incident angle has more developable time. Finally, DSC is able to fill a shortage of power caused from low efficiency of DSC for same time by developing during impossible time to develop in Si solar cell. As a result, DSC has 75% and 210% cumulative power of Si solar cell in summer and winter under the standard sunshine duration.
