The twin impulse wave leads to very complicated flow fields, such as Mach stem, spherical waves, and vortex ring. The twin impulse wave discharged from the exits of the two tubes placed in parallel is investigated to understand detailed flow physics associated with the twin impulse wave, compared with those in a single impulse wave. In the current study, the merging phenomena and propagation characteristics of the impulse waves are investigated using a shock tube experiment and by numerical computations. The Harten-Yee's total variation diminishing (TVD) scheme is used to solve the unsteady, two-dimensional, compressible, Euler equations. The Mach number $M_{s}$, of incident shock wave is changed below 1.5 and the distance between two-parallel tubes, L/d, is changed from 1.2 to 4.0. In the shock tube experiment, the twin impulse waves are visualized by a Schlieren optical system for the purpose of validation of computational work. The results obtained show that on the symmetric axis between two parallel tubes, the peak pressure produced by the twin-impulse waves and its location strongly depend upon the distance between two parallel tubes, L/d and the incident shock Mach number, $M_{s}$. The predicted Schlieren images represent the measured twin-impulse wave with a good accuracy.

A method using beamforming has been developed to measure absorption coefncient of oblique incidence. MUSIC(Multiple Signal Classification) method detects the angle of incidence and reflection. And beamforming method separates the incident and reflected wave. And spatial smoothing technique is used to reduce the coherence between the incident and reflected wave. The test material were modeled as a locally reacting surface. Numerical and experiment results are performed to verify the performance of proposed method.

Simulations of three-dimensional numerical wave tank are performed to investigate wave force acting on a large cylindrical structure and consequent wave deformation, which are induced by bore after breaking waves. The numerical model is based on the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with a finite-difference method combined with a volume of fluid(VOF) method, which is capable of tracking the complex free surface, including wave breaking. In order to promote wave breaking of the incident wave, the approach slope was built seaward of the structure with a constant slope and a large cylindrical structure was installed on a flat bed. The incident waves were broken on the approach slope or flat bed by its wave height. In the present study, all waves acting on the large cylindrical structure were limited to breaking bore after wave breaking. The effects of the position of the structure and the incident wave height on the wave force and wave transformations were mainly investigated with the concern of wave breaking. Further, the relations between the variation of wave energy by wave propagation after wave breaking and wave force acting on the structure were discussed to give the understanding of the full-linear wave-structure interactions in three-dimensional wave fields.

The analytic solution of wave scattering of monochromatic waves on a pile breakwater by an eigenfunction expansion method is extended to the case of directional irregular waves. The scattering wave spectrum and the force spectrum can be expressed from the reflection coefficient, transmission coefficient and the wave forces obtained from changing frequencies and incident angles in monochromatic waves. By numerical integration of 2-dimensional spectrum which is function of frequencies and incident angles, the representative values for the scattered waves and wave forces are obtained and the dependence of the transmission coefficients and wave forces on the directional distribution function, the principal wave direction, the submergence depth, and porosity is analyzed.

A study is made, in the framework of linear potential theory, to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of two-dimensional wave-energy absorbers as like the Salter's duck and an oscillating cam with Lewis-form section, which undergo uncoupled heaving and rolling motions in an incident linear gravity wave in deep water. Wave energy is supposed to be extracted by a linearly damped generator with an spring. Some well-known formulae in ship hydrodynamics such as Haskind-Newman relation and Bessho-Newman relation are utilized in forms of Kochin functions to derived expressions for efficiency, breaking effect and drift force of the absorber. Maximum ideal efficiency of 100% can be arrived at an prescribed tuning frequency. Coupling effect is also examined to assess the detrimental effect of sway on efficiency. From numerical calculations for both types of two-dimensional devices it may be concluded that a wave-energy absorber functions at the same time as a wave breaker and that the drift force acting on the device becomes smaller when it absorbs wave energy than as it oscillates freely. Finally the study is extended to an infinite array system, equivalent to a body in a canal, to show that all incident wave energy can be absorbed regardless of the absorber's size, only if the optimum space and the optimum condition of control are realized.

The objective of this study is to observe and optimize a typical ocean environment and reduce wave reflections in the wave flume. In order to generate ocean waves in the wave flume, a combination of a horizontal piston type wave generator and wave absorbers was installed in the channel. Two probes for measuring the wave heights, i.e., wave level gauges, were used to record the continuous variation of the wave surface, the phase difference, and the maximum (crest) and minimum (trough) points of the propagating waves. In order to optimize the shape and size of the propagating waves, several absorption methods were proposed. Apart from an active wave absorption method, we used methods that involved vertical porous plates, horizontal punching plates, and sloping-wall-type wave absorbers. To obtain the best propagating waves, a sloping-wall-type wave absorber was chosen and tested in terms of the constitutive filling materials and the location and shape of the plate. This study also focused on the theoretical prediction of the wave surface, separating them into the incident and reflective components. From the results, it is evident that the wave absorber comprising a hard filling material exhibits a better performance than the absorber comprising a soft material, i.e., the wave absorber can be a strong sink to control the energy of the incoming wave. In addition, larger wave absorbers correspond to lower reflectance because a larger volume can reduce the incoming wave energy. Therefore, at constant absorber conditions, the reflectance of the wave increases as the wave period increases. Finally, the reflectance of the wave was controlled to be less than 0.1 in this study so that the wave flume can be used to simulate an offshore environment.
This paper presents a theoretical investigation of power reflection and transmission coefficients for a meander-line polarizer placed periodically on a chiral slab. It is assumed that a linearly polarized transverse magnetic wave is incident on a chiral slab from the air region. In the analysis, we derive the electric and magnetic fields in the modal form in the air and chiral regions. We obtain power reflection and transmission coefficients in a straightforward manner after matching the tangential components of the electric and magnetic fields at the boundaries. We present numerical results for the power reflection and transmission coefficients versus frequency and incident angle for different values of the chirality admittance. A meander-line polarizer placed on a dielectric slab can convert a linearly polarized wave to a circularly polarized wave. The design parameters for a meander-line polarizer are the dimensions of the meander-line and the values of the dielectric slab. Replacing a dielectric slab with a chiral slab introduces a new independent parameter which controls the wave polarization.

Shock-wave focusing from a two-dimensional parabolic reflector was simulated using an explicit finite volume upwind TVD scheme. Computations were performed for three different incident shock speeds of $M_s$ = 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3, corresponding to the relatively weak, intermediate, and strong shock waves, respectively. Numerical solutions nicely resolved all the waves evolving through the focusing process. As the incident shock strength increase, a transition was observed in the shock-fronts geometry that was caused by the change in the reflection type of converging shock fronts on the axis of symmetry, from regular-type to Mach-type reflection. The computed maximum on-axis pressure amplification and the trajectories of three-wave intersections showed good agreement with experimental results. The strong nonlinear effect near the focal region which determines the shock-fronts geometries at and behind the focus and at the same time confines the pressure amplification at the focus was clearly revealed from the present numerical simulation.

In this study, efforts were made to understand the propagation of electromagnetic wave through the foam core sandwich structure by the analytical model. Foam core sandwich structure is composed of glass/epoxy composite skins and foam core. Transmittance and reflectance of the arbitrary linearly polarized incident TEM waves through the unidirectional composites, foam and foam core sandwich structures were determined as functions of thickness, fiber orientation of composites, incident angle and polarization angle by the analytical model. From the results of the analysis, the general tendency of transmittance and reflectance of electromagnetic wave through composites, foam and foam core sandwich structures was obtained.

For the accurate measurement of acoustic properties of a surface, efforts have been made to reduce errors caused by external disturbance. If the reflection coefficient is considered as a transfer function between reflected wave and incident wave, causality is required between them and the reflection coefficient should be of minimum phase. In this thesis, the minimum phase condition is applied to measure correct reflection coefficient. The reflection coefficient is approximated as a rational function in the Z domain by minimizing the sum square error. Then the minimum phase reflection coefficient is reconstructed using the distribution of poles and zeros of the reflection coefficient model. The incident wave, the reflected wave and the impulse response function of causality are recalculated from the minimum phase reflection coefficient for further applications.
