  • The Incheon International Amort Railroad (IIAR) is the railroad that connects Incheon International Airport, Gimpo Airport and Seoul Station. IIAR is now under construction, and it will be finished to Gimpo Amort by 2006, to Seoul Station by 2008. But IIAR is not only so late to start but also has no discussion about effective connecting methods to existing railroads and fine operation plan. Therefore, after IIAR opens, it is possible for IIAR to lose to limousine bus using highway. So, this paper proposes 4 effective connecting methods for IIAR - (1) Shuttle transport, (2) Short-distance connecting transport (Inside IIAR, Seoul Subway Line 9, 'Han-River line') (3) Mid-distance connecting transport (Jung-ang, Tae-baek, Young-dong line) (4) Long-distance connecting transport (Korean Train express (korean high speed railroad)) These methods can increase the connectivity of IIAR with existing railroads and the competition power of IIAR against highway.

  • The monthly distribution of zooplankton communities in Han River estuary was investigated at two stations from July 1998 to June 1999. Monthly mean abundance of total zooplankton varied remarkably, with the range from 20 $indiv.{\cdot}m^{-3}$ to 19,600 $indiv.{\cdot}m^{-3}$. During the study period, dominant species of zooplankton community were dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans, copepods Paracalanus indicus, Paracaanus crassirostris, Acartia hongi, Acartia ohtsukai, and meroplanton cirriped larvae. According to tidal states, relative high abundance occurred at high tide without regard to season. The temporal distribution of abundance implied that the reduced salinity probably limited the zooplankton populations and the fluctuations of salinity were an important factor in the variation of abundance. However, the results of salinity tolerance test shows that the variations in salinity do not directly influence the decrease of abundance. This study shows that the relatively high abundance of zooplankton near high tide seems to be related with the expansion of abundant zooplankton inhabiting Incheon coastal waters through tidal currents.

  • In this study, to evaluate the characteristics of the pollution in the major inflow tributaries and major environmental facilities in the watershed of Ara waterway, An inflow flow rate measurement and water quality analysis were conducted during dry and rainy seasons. In addition, the flow rate measurement, water quality analysis, and pollutant load at each monitoring point were compared and evaluated. Influx of BOD5, T-P and T-N into the tributaries of the ARA waterway watershed, excluding the Gulpo river watershed, during dry season were only 0.007%, 0.005% and 0.004% respectively of the incoming loads in the entire ARA waterway basin. In addition, it was confirmed that the discharge pollutant loads during rainfall event was about 440 times more for BOD5, about 545 times on T-P, and about 23 times on T-N in comparison to the pollutant loads during the dry days. When the Gulhyeon rubber dam was deflated, the discharged pollutant load during a rainfall was higher than the estimated load at the G7 monitoring point because the deposited pollutants from the upstream riverbed flowed down. Therefore, during a rainy season, it is necessary to manage the influx of high-load water pollutants from the overflow and deflation of the Gulhyun rubber dam as well as to find a strategy to reduce the pollutant loads in the Gulpo river watershed.

  • Flow input from the basin will not remain the same as before due to climate changes. Since the predictions on river discharge due to climate change is given by scenarios, various discharge scenarios were prepared in this study. For a long term and reach prediction, semi-two dimensional sediment transport model, GSTARS, was used. The flood water surface elevations predicted by GSTARS model were analysed statistically and it was concluded that the model is applicable for the South Han River. Three stream tubes is the most suitable to simulate two dimensional river geometric change River geometric changes. For sediment load computation, Ackers and White equation and Yang equation were resonable. River will become narrower regardless of discharge variation, more discharge results in deeper channel.

  • In river with bar, the characteristics of its physical conditions have a close relationship with bar morphology. In this paper, a monitoring approach of bar transformation in the Han River Estuary is presented using RADARSAT/SAR Images. The estuary is divided into North and South Korea and its area is blocked by CCL(Civil Control Line). Satellite remote sensing, therefore, is uniquely suited to monitoring bar transformation. Based on SAR signatures for bars, bar transformation is investigated from 2000 to 2005, and monitoring of suspended-silt transportations from terrestrial runoff is tried to understand the morphology during the events of severe rain storm. SAR data did not reveal clearly the bar locations because of most of data acquisitions during high tides from 6.8 m to 9.0 m. Even though the problem, it could be said that in the estuary vegetated area and natural levees are developed well, but bars and shifted after an event like a flood. It is also showed that suspended solids such as silt transported through the estuary could contribute highly to a sedimentation environment around Incheon.

  • This paper attempts to measure the environmental value of the Nakdong-river estuary, which is ecologically important but confronted with the threat of development. Especially, in order to elicit the environmental values of its four attributes, contingent valuation method(CVM) based on multi-attribute utility theory is applied and the CVM survey was rigorously designed to comply with the guidelines for best-practiced CVM studies. We surveyed a randomly selected sample of 400 and 350 households in Busan and six large cities(Seoul, Incheon, Daegu, Daejeon, Gwangju, and Ulsan), respectively and asked respondents questions in person-to-person interviews about how they would willing to pay for the estuary conservation and management program. Respondents overall accepted the contingent market and were willing to contribute a significant amount(2,457 won in Busan and 3,560 won in six large cities), on average, per household per year, which implies that there exists a large difference between the two. The aggregate values of the Nakdong-river estuary in Busan and six large cities amount to 2.92 and 22.32 billion won, respectively, per year. In addition, expanding the values to Korea produces 51.34 billion won per year. The quantitative values can be utilized in planning and decision-making about development versus conservation of the estuary.

  • The formula was proposed through the examination of probability rainfall intensity formula used in Incheon based upon recent occurrences of heavy rain and extraordinary storms. Random-time maximum annual rainfalls were estimated for durations from ten minutes to twenty-four hours from the data by Korea Meteorological Administration. Eleven types of probability distribution are considered to estimate probable rainfall depths for different storm durations at Incheon city. Three goodness-of-fit tests including Chi-square, Kolmogorov-Smirmov and framer Von Misses were used to analyze the tendency of recent rainfall. Considering maximum rainfall occurred, General Extreme Value(GEV) distribution was chosen as the appropriate probability distribution. Five types of probability rainfall formulas including Talbot type, Sherman type, Japanese type, unified type I and unified type II are considered to determine the best type for rainfall intensity at Incheon. The formula was determined considering the time of concentration of sewer system and river at Incheon city. Unified type I was chosen for its accuracy and was proposed to represent rainfall intensity of Incheon district.

  • Sinca early 1930' Colitis taenia striate were introduced to the Donsgjin in Chollabukdo, where it hybridized with an endemic subspecies C. tiutheri. Protein electrophoresis revealed high levels of hybridization with intensive backcrossing occupied approximately 20 kilometers of the river. This is roughly one-half of tech historic range of the endemic species. The average frequency of introduced alleles of three diagnostic loci ranged 0.03-0.46 among 11 sites in tech svrnpatric area. Clinal patterns in allele frequencies suggest C. tiutheri were introduced in an upper reaches of the Dongjin and downstream dispersal of the introduced alleles followed. There is little linkasedisequilibrium between the diagnostic loci, suggesting the nuclear genomes of tech two subspecies are randomly associated. The evidence presented here and previously supports recognition of C. t. striata and C. t. lutheri as the typical subspecies.

  • Geosynthetic damage has attracted a major attention since the introduction of geotextiles for civil construction applications. Geotextile is one of the most useful and effective polymer material in civil construction works and the main function of geotextile is separation, reinforcement, filtering and drainage. Recently, because of the shortage of natural rock, traditional forms of river and coastal structures have become very expensive to build and maintain. This study tries to suggest the method of estimating valid stitching rate and the methodology of sea dyke construction over soft soils for more reasonable application of geotextile mat by studying tensile strength, bursting strength, punching strength, tear strength that are considered when analyzing and designing geotextile mat of a field.
