DSM (Digital Surface Model) is a digital representation of ground surface topography or terrain that is widely used for hydrology, slope analysis, and urban planning. Aerial photogrammetry and LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) are main technology for urban DSM generation but high-resolution satellite imagery is the only ingredient for remote inaccessible areas. Traditional automated DSM generation method is based on correlation-based methods but recent study shows that a modern pixelwise image matching method, SGM (Semi-Global Matching) can be an alternative. Therefore this study investigated the application of SGM for Kompsat satellite data of KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute). Firstly, the sensor modeling was carried out for precise ground-to-image computation, followed by the epipolar image resampling for efficient stereo processing. Secondly, SGM was applied using different parameterizations. The generated DSM was evaluated with a reference DSM generated by the first pulse returns of the LIDAR reference dataset.
Music is a means of emotional expression and self-expression. In addition, it allows to interact with others and communicate with the world. Music may be considered as inaccessible for people with hearing impairment, who are sometimes discriminated from the music community. We explore trends in various technologies and research that enable everyone to access and enjoy music through experiences that leverage new and innovative technological approaches and bridge the gap between people with and without hearing impairment. Various aspects of haptic systems are being studied, but most of them are performance-oriented and focus only on technical functions. As research matures, more detailed and new studies that converge with various senses are being attempted. These studies will likely evolve into influential research areas that can positively affect the lives of people in terms of accessibility and inclusion by providing detailed functions and stimuli to specific users, including those with hearing impairment.

Recent climate change can increase the frequency and damage of wildfires worldwide. It can also lead to the deterioration of the forest ecosystem and increase casualties and economic loss. Satellite-based indices for forest damage can facilitate an objective and rapid examination of burned areas and help analyze inaccessible places like North Korea. In this letter, we conducted a detection of burned areas in North Korea using the traditional Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR), the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) to represent vegetation vitality, and the Fire Burn Index (FBI) and Forest Withering Index (FWI) that were recently developed. Also, we suggested a strategy for the satellite-based detection of burned areas in the Korean Peninsula as a result of comparing the four indices. Future work requires the examination of small-size wildfires and the applicability of deep learning technologies.

The purpose of this study was the assessment of the accuracy of Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Integrated Multi-Satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG), a rainfall data source derived from satellite images, for evaluation of its applicability to use in ungauged or inaccessible areas. The study area was the overall area of the Korean peninsula divided into six regions. Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) rainfall data from the Korean Meteorological Administration and IMERG satellite rainfall were used. Their average correlation coefficient was 0.46 for a 1-h temporal resolution, and it increased to 0.69 for a 24-h temporal resolution. The IMERG data quantitatively estimated less than the rainfall totals from ground gauges, and the bias decreased as the temporal resolution was decreased. The correlation coefficients of the two rainfall events, which had relatively greater rainfall amounts, were 0.68 and 0.69 for a 1-h temporal resolution. Additionally, the spatial distributions of the ASOS and IMERG data were similar to each other. The study results showed that the IMERG data were very useful in the assessment of the hydro-meteorological characteristics of ungauged or inaccessible areas. In a future study, verification of the accuracy of satellite-derived rainfall data will be performed by expanding the analysis periods and applying various statistical techniques.
In order to monitor nuclear activity in inaccessible areas, it is necessary to establish a methodology to analyze changesin nuclear activity-related objects using high-resolution satellite images. However, traditional object detection and change detection techniques using satellite images have difficulties in applying detection results to various fields because effects of seasons and weather at the time of image acquisition. Therefore, in this paper, an object of interest was detected in a satellite image using a deep learning model, and object changes in the satellite image were analyzed based on object detection results. An initial training of the deep learning model was performed using an open dataset for object detection, and additional training dataset for the region of interest were generated and applied to transfer learning. After detecting objects by multitemporal and multisensory satellite images, we tried to detect changes in objects in the images by using them. In the experiments, it was confirmed that the object detection results of various satellite images can be directly used for change detection for nuclear activity-related monitoring in inaccessible areas.

Large dams, which are critical infrastructures for disaster prevention, are exposed to various risks such as aging, floods, and earthquakes. Better dam safety inspection and diagnosis using digital transformation technologies are needed. Traditional visual inspection methods by human inspectors have several limitations, including many inaccessible areas, danger of working at heights, and know-how based subjective inspections. In this study, drone photogrammetry was performed on two large dams to evaluate the applicability of digital data-based dam safety inspection and propose a data management methodology for continuous use. High-quality 3D digital models with GSD (ground sampling distance) within 2.5 cm/pixel were generated by flat double grid missions and manual photography methods, despite reservoir water surface and electromagnetic interferences, and severe altitude differences ranging from 42 m to 99.9 m of dam heights. Geometry profiles of the as-built conditions were easily extracted from the generated 3D mesh models, orthomosaic images, and digital surface models. The effectiveness of monitoring dam deformation by photogrammetry was confirmed. Cracks and deterioration of dam concrete structures, such as spillways and intake towers, were detected and visualized efficiently using the digital 3D models. This can be used for safe inspection of inaccessible areas and avoiding risky tasks at heights. Furthermore, a methodology for mapping the inspection result onto the 3D digital model and structuring a relational database for managing deterioration information history was proposed. As a result of measuring the labor and time required for safety inspection at the SYG Dam spillway, the drone photogrammetry method was found to have a 48% productivity improvement effect compared to the conventional manpower visual inspection method. The drone photogrammetry-based dam safety inspection is considered very effective in improving work productivity and data reliability.
The Haptic Exploration Laboratory at The Johns Hopkins University is currently exploring many problems related to haptics (force and tactile information) in human-machine systems. We divide our work into two main areas: virtual environments and robot-assisted manipulation systems. Our interest in virtual environments focuses on reality-based modeling, in which measurements of the static and dynamic properties of actual objects are taken in order to produce realistic virtual environments. Thus, we must develop methods for acquiring data from real objects and populating pre-defined models. We also seek to create systems that can provide active manipulation assistance to the operator through haptic, visual, and audio cues. These systems may be teleoperated systems, which allow human users to operate in environments that would normally be inaccessible due to hazards, distance, or scale. Alternatively, cooperative manipulation systems allow a user and a robot to share a tool, allowing the user to guide or override the robot directly if necessary. Haptics in human-machine systems can have many applications, such as undersea and space operations, training for pilots and surgeons, and manufacturing. We focus much of our work on medical applications.

The topographic volume estimation is carried out for the earth work of a construction site and quarry excavation monitoring. The topographic surveying using instruments such as engineering levels, total stations, and GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) receivers have traditionally been used and the photogrammetric approach using drone systems has recently been introduced. However, these methods cannot be adopted for inaccessible areas where high resolution satellite images can be an alternative. We carried out experiments using Kompsat-3/3A data to estimate topographic volume for a quarry and checked the accuracy. We generated DEMs (Digital Elevation Model) using newly acquired Kompsat-3/3A data and checked the accuracy of the topographic volume estimation by comparing them to a reference DEM generated by timely operating a drone system. The experimental results showed that geometric differences between stereo images significantly lower the quality of the volume estimation. The tested Kompsat-3 data showed one meter level of elevation accuracy with the volume estimation error less than 1% while the tested Kompsat-3A data showed lower results because of the large geometric difference.
In this paper, we propose a method to detect interesting objects in inaccessible areas using high resolution satellite images. We define the interesting objects as a set of objects which have conceptually similar image patterns, not having exact sizes or shapes. In this paper, we developed a learning and classifier of Support Vector Machine (SVM) that extracts characteristic data for inputted images using Histogram of Gradients (HOG) feature and detects similar objects in other images using the characteristic data. As automatic search of interesting objects in our proposed method, we identify that our method provides reduced time and efforts for manual searching similar objects.
Shipping of North Korea is not yet publicly well documented. Taedong River, the most important sea route of North Korea, is selected as a model study area to show how effectively a remote place can be investigated through the application of satellite-based Automatic Identification System (S-AIS) for understanding shipping and tracks of vessels which passed the lock gate in the Taedong River and visited the nearby ports on its track. S-AIS data of the year 2014 were analyzed on the basis of various time periods, country of registry and category of ships. A total of 325 vessels were observed. The ships under the flags of North Korea, Cambodia and Sierra Leone were found to be dominant in frequencies which accounted for 43.08%, 16.00%, and 8.92%, respectively. Trajectories of the 325 ships in the Yellow Sea were also checked according to the flags. It is concluded that some ships under the flags of Cambodia, Sierra Leone, Mongolia, Panama and Kiribati are regarded as flags of convenience, and ships without flag and ship type codes also comprised a remarkable portion out of the total ships.
