  • Transplantings of onion (Allium cepa L.) seedlings are required for higher germinability and uniformity. This study was done to determine effects of various seed treatments (seed cleaning, priming, GA$_3$, prechilling, drying, and light quality during seed drying) on germination and seedling emergence. Nongwoodaego and Changnyungdaego were used as cultivars for checking seed germination, and two cultivars and Cheonjuguhyeonghwang were investigated with seedling production rate. Seed cleaning using water prior to the other treatments greatly increased germination rate. Priming with 200mM Ca(NO$_3$)$_2$ solution somewhat alleviated the germination rate while GA$_3$ did not. Prechilling had the highest rate among the treatments. Seed drying after prechilling enhanced the rate compared to non drying, and during drying the prechilled seeds red light illumination showed the greatest rate in comparison with dark, blue, and far-red ones. Seedling production rate was enhanced in sequential treatments of seed cleaning, prechilling for 3 to 5 days, and red light treatment during 6 hour seed drying.

  • We report a simple and cost-effective method to fabricate transparent superhydrophobic surface on various substrates. The surface was fabricated by coating hydrophobic PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) film on the silica nanoparticle and subsequent fixing of the hydrophobic silica nanoparticles onto substrates. The water contact angle for the prepared surface was determined to be over $150^{\circ}$, whichindicates that the surface is highly repellent to water. The hierarchical structure and roughness of the surface were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Additionally, transparency of the prepared surface was measured with UV-VIS spectrometer. The transmittance of the superhydrophobic surface was ~80%, which is lower than that without PDMS-coated silica by only 5 to 10%. It is also notable that the superhydrophobic surface fully recovers its original transmittance after self-cleaning process. Also the PDMS coating is stable under a wide range of pH conditions, UV radiation and salinity conditions, which is essential for the practical use. Moreover, our fabrication method is applicable in large scale production.

  • Purpose: Town of Woldia, a semi-arid region in the Northern Wollo region of Ethiopia, faces water supply shortage in general, though the town possesses a running stream of clean water throughout the year. This study is aimed at analyzing the possibility of using rainwater for water scarcity and non-potable water needs of the Woldia University. A careful study and analysis have been made to assess the feasibility of using rainwater in place of the tap water supply. Research design and methodology: This study was done inside the main campus of Woldia University located in Woldia town. The runoff water from the roof of buildings was studied, by the time of rainfall in the town. Also, the budget needed for implementing a rainwater harvesting system was calculated. Results: The findings of the study clearly indicates that the requirements of the water to use for flushing, cleaning, and washing toilets in the administrative buildings and classrooms can be satisfied by using rainwater as an alternative to tap water. Conclusion: Based on the results the study finds it is benefitable for the Woldia University to install the rainwater harvesting system at the earliest to solve the water problems prevailing in the current situation.

  • This study investigated the water saving technology for the toilet stool system in a water closet. Since in 21st century water would be the prospected factor to measure the wealth of a country instead of the oil, water saving technologies in the toilet stool in a closet system is getting more important than the cleaning stool and the reducing noise performances. According to the statistics in Korea the percentage of using water in toilet is about 27% to the total amount of water used. Therefore, this study theoretically approached the possible amount of water saving and suggested the new variable position straight trap device in the toilet stool system.

  • A cost analysis method for pretreament processes of a large scale seawater desalination plant was considered using a cost estimation model, WaTER (Water Treatment Estimation Routine). This model is based on cost functions of U.S. EPA to conduct economic analysis of water treatment facilities. A virtual seawater desalination plant which has pretreatment production capacity of $100,000m^3$ per day was chosen as a model plant. Dual media filtration and microfiltration systems were compared as pretreatment process, and the following reverse osmosis process was modeled. As a result, microfiltration showed a price competitiveness in condition of operating with reverse osmosis process by reducing the loads of water treatment and membrane cleaning despite it's high annual cost.

  • Membrane distillation process was used for desalination of hot (333 K) geothermal water, which was applied in the plant producing heating water. The investigated water contained 120 g salts/$dm^3$, mainly NaCl. The mineral composition was studied using an ion chromatography method. The obtained rejection of solutes was closed to 100%, but the small amounts of $NH_3$ also diffused through the membrane together with water vapour. However, the composition of obtained distillate allowed to use it as a makeup water in the heating water system. The geothermal water under study was concentrated from 120 to 286 g NaCl/$dm^3$. This increase in the solution concentration caused the permeate flux decline by a 10-20%. The geothermal water contained sulphates, which was subjected to two-fold concentration to achieve the concentration 2.4-2.6 g $SO{_4}{^{2-}}/dm^3$ and the sulphates then crystallized in the form of calcium sulphate. As a results, an intensive membranes scaling and the permeate flux decline was observed. The XRD analysis indicated that beside the gypsum also the NaCl crystallites were deposited on the membrane surfaces. The fresh geothermal water dissolved the mixed $CaSO_4$ and NaCl deposit from the membrane surface. This property can be utilized for self-cleaning of MD modules. Using a batch feeding of MD installation, the concentration of geothermal water was carried out over 800 h, without significant performance losses.

  • Nowadays, like any other areas we have asked that the concrete would get more and more properties to increase there performance. So, in this research we are intended to develop the Photocatalytic Concrete which is one of the High Performance Concrete with waste gas reduction and self-cleaning. The fundamental phenomena of the Photocatalytic Concrete were observed by the residue water-weight, SEM, flow and surface hardness(Pencil tester). As a result of this study, the Photocatalytic Concrete used Photocatalytic powder, OPC admixture and other materials can obtain its properties, also photocatalytic efficiency. Last of all, we are convinced of the Photocatalytic Concrete possibility and make an effort to develop its properties added a various study.

  • Generally the wafer is increased by 300mm. We are desired that the wafer is prevented from pollutions of metal contaminant on surface of wafer. We have to develop new wafer cleaning process of IC Manufacturing that can reduce DI water and chemical by removal of the wafer cleaning process step. Moreover, it is difficult to control temprature and density of chemical in spite of rapidly increasing automation of system. We design smart module controller for new generation of semiconductor wet station with intelligent algorithm using data that is taken by computer simulation for optimal system.

  • Snow removal system is named for machinery which manages roads for passing of pedestrians and automobiles when snow is piled up on the road. This paper studies configuration design of snow removal system that has several functions-melting snow in the street without moving it to other place, transferring snow to the melter and cleaning road by spraying water for cleaning road. These sorts of functions are analyzed by function decomposition method of Kirshman and Fadel and, based upon which, machine parts are selected. Layout design would follow functional design to testify if the selected component satisfies space which is allowed by constraints.
