A study on the analysis of grinding mechanism by using optimum in-process electrolytic dressing (최적 연속 전해드레싱에 의한 연삭기구의 규명에 관한 연구)

  • In recent years, grinding techniques for precision machining of brittle materials used in electric, optical and magnetic parts have been improved by using superabrasive wheel and precision grinding machine. The completion of optimum dressing of superabrasive wheel makes possible the effective precision grinding of brittle materials. However, the present dressing system cannot have control of optimum dressing of the superabrasive wheel. In this study, a new system and the grinding mechanism of optimum in-process electrolytic dressing were proposed. This system can carry out optimum in-process dressing of superabrasive wheel, and give very effective control according to unstable current and gap increase. Therefore, the optimum in-process electrolytic dressing is a good method to obtain the efficiency and mirror-like grinding of brittle materials.

  • Application of ceramics has grown considerably due to significant improvement in their mechanical properties such as light weight, chemical stability and superior wear resistance. Despite these character, the use of ceramics has not increased because of poor machinability. The method of using of super-abrasives metal bond wheel was proposed. But it is difficult that super-abrasives metal bond wheel can be dressed. Recently, the technology of in-process electrolytic dressing is developed to solve this problem. If this method is applied, loading and glazing are disappeared apparently. The aim of this study is to determine the machining characteristics in terms of lapping wheel speed, machining time, pressurized weight to the workpiece and peak current using in-process electrolytic dressing applied to the CIB-diamond lapping wheel to achieve ultra-precision lapping machining technique.

  • The establishment of a practical ultra-precision grinding technique using Diamond and CBN wheels is one of the major key technolo-gies to improve production techniques for machine-to-difficult materials without finishing process such as lapping and polishing. But the special efficient dressing technique for ultra-fine grit type grinding wheels to stabilize the grinding ability was not developed. Recently electrolytic in-process dressing technique is proposed to ultra-fine grit type metal bonded diamond wheels to protrude abra-sives continuously from the tool surface. This technology can be widely used to surface grinding and cylindrical grinding but cannot be used efficiently to internal grinding because of the electrode attachment trouble. This paper describes the effect of interval type electrolytic dressing as proposed newly to cast iron bonded diamond wheel for efficient internal grinding with mirror type high quality ground surface.

  • Recently, developments in the frontier industry have brought a rapid increase in the use of brittle materials such as silicon wafer, ferrite, sintered carbide, MgO single crystal and die steel. Because of high hardness and brittleness the cracking and chipping are apt to generate in the grinding of brittle materials, but have replaced gradually the high precision grinding. In this study, the optimum system of in-process electrolytic dressing controlled by computer was developed for improving the defects, and could maintain the optimum dressing condition at all times. The control of in-process dressing was simplified using this system, was able to maintain a stable dressing current and was unrelated to the change of dressing condition according to the variation of gap and oxide layer. Therefore, the optimum in-process electrolytic dressing system was constructed and the analysis of grinding mechanism with this system was studied.

  • Electrolytic in-process dressing grinding technique which enables application of metal bond wheels with fine superabrasives in mirror surface grinding operations has developed. It is possible to make efficient precision machining of hard and brittle material such as ceramic and hard metal by the employment of this technique. However, in order to ensure the success of performances such as efficient machining, surface finish, and surface quality, it is important to sustain the insulating layer that has sharply exposed abrasives in wheel surface. Using AE(Acoustic Emission) sensor, this paper will show whether the insulating layer sustains stably or not in real grinding time. And by comparing AErms value and surface roughness their thresholds for stable electrolytic in-process dressing grinding will be determined.

  • A new dressing technique with utilizes electrolytic phenomenon for realizing effective mirror surface grindings with metal bonded super-abrasive wheels is called “Electrolytic In-process Dressing Grinding”. This technique enabled metal bonded micro-grain wheels, such as micro-grain cast iron fiber bonded wheels, to be used for mirror surface finish processes effectively. But this technique requires a lot of knowledge and experience to perform. And the condition of dressing is variable according to the time. Therefore adaptation of Monitoring and Control technique is needed.
