The thermomechanical characteristics of rocks such as temperature dependency of strength and deformation were experimentally investigated using Iksan granite, Cheonan tonalite and Chung-ju dolomite for proper design and stability analysis of underground structures subjected to temperature changes. For the temperature below critical threshold temperature $T_c$, the variation of uniaxial compressive strength, Young's modulus, Brazilian tensile strength and cohesion with temperature were slightly different for each rock type, but these mechanical properties decreased at the temperatures above $T_c$ by the effect of thermal cracking. Tensile strength was most affected by $T_c$, and uniaxial compressive strength was least affected by $T_c$. To the temperature of 20$0^{\circ}C$ with the confining prressure to 150 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, failure limit on principal stress plane and failure envelope on $\sigma$-$\tau$ plane of Iksan granite were continuously lowered with increasing temperature but those of Cheonan tonalite and Chung-ju dolomite showed different characteristics depending on minor principal stress on principal stress plane and normal stress on $\sigma$-$\tau$ plane. The reason for this appeared to be the effect of rock characteristics and confining pressure. Young's modulus was also temperature and pressure dependent, but the variation of Young's modulus was about 10%, which was small compared to the variation of compressive strength. In general, Young's modulus increased with increasing confining pressure and increased or decreased with increasing temperature to 20$0^{\circ}C$ depending on the rock type.

Seismic behavior of 3-dimensional setback structures showing abrupt reductions of the floor size within the structure height and the effect of in-plane deformations of floor slabs on the seismic behavior of those structures are investigated. To find out general seismic behavior of 3-dimensional setback structures two parameters, level of setback(L/sub s/) and degree of setback(R/sub s/) are used. Analysis results obtained from forty eight setback structures show that a sudden change in story shear near setback level is occurred for irregular setback structures. The effect of in-plane deformation of floor slabs on the seismic behavior of setback structures is greatly influenced by the arrangement of lateral load resisting elements and it is more pronounced for frame-shear wall system showing large difference in stiffness among the lateral load resisting elements. The in-plane deformation of floor slabs results in reduced base shear, especially for FW-type structures with L/sub s/=1.0. Also, it brings about reduced story shear for the lateral load resisting element with shear wall and increase in story shear lot the lateral load resisting element without shear wall. The in-plane deformation of floor slabs at the base portion and/or tower portion due to difference in stiffness among the lateral load resisting elements brings about increment of floor displacements at all floor level.

Cellulose based Electro-Active Papers (EAPap) is very promising material due to its merits in terms of large bending deformation, low actuation voltage, ultra-lightweight, and biodegradability. These advantages make it possible to utilize applications, such as artificial muscles and achieving flapping wings, micro-insect robots and smart wall papers. This paper investigates the in-plane strains of EAPap under electric fields, which are useful for a contractile actuator application The preparation of EAPap samples and the in-plane strain measurement system are explained, and the test results are shown in terms of electric field, frequency and the oriental ions of the samples. The power consumption and the strain energy of EAPap samples are discussed. Although there are still unknown facts in EAPap material, this in-plane strain may be useful for artificial muscle applications.
Exact solutions for stresses, strains, and displacements of a perforated rectangular plate by an arbitrarily located circular hole subjected to both linearly varying in-plane normal stresses on the two opposite edges and in-plane shear stresses are investigated using the Airy stress function. The hoop stress occurring at the edge of the non-central circular hole are computed and plotted. Stress concentration factors (the maximum non-dimensional hoop stresses) depending on the location and size of the non-central circular hole and the loading condition are tabularized.

Two double-exposure holograms are made in the different view angle at the same time, using laser, by overlapping before and after the static deformation. These images are transfered to the computer. The fringe patterns of holograms are recognized by image processing and each component of the displacement and strain at each point of the specimen is obtained by vector analysis, and the results were presented in the graphical form. For the verification of all the ment process, the two experimental cases, the in-plane displacement by tension load and the out-of-plane displacement by bending load, are measured. These results are compared with the exact solution.
In this research, the size-dependent impact of an embedded piezoelectric nanoplate subjected to in-plane loading on free vibration characteristic is studied. The foundation is two-parameter viscoelastic. The nonlocal elasticity is employed in order to capture the influence of size of the plate. By utilizing Hamilton's principle as well as the first- order shear deformation theory, the governing equation and boundary conditions are achieved. Then, using Navier method the equations associated with the free vibration of a plate constructed piezoelectric material under in-plane loads are solved analytically. The presented formulation and solution procedure are validated using other papers. Also, the impacts of nonlocal parameter, mode number, constant of spring, electric potential, and geometry of the nanoplate on the vibrational frequency are examined. As this paper is the first research in which the vibration associated with piezoelectric nanoplate on the basis of FSDT and nonlocal elasticity is investigated analytically, this results can be used in future investigation in this area.

It this study, beam-type bend specimen is used to evaluate the interlaminar fracture toughness of laminated composite under mixed-mode deformations. The specimen is loaded under three-point bending and hence produced mixed-mode deformations in the vicinity of the crack tip according to the variation of the thickness ratio on delamination plane. Total energy release rate is obtained by elementary beam theory considering the effect of shear deformation. The partitioning of total value into mode-I and mode-II components is also performed. The mixed-mode interlaminar fracture toughness is evaluated by experiments on specimens with several thickness ratios of delamination plane. As the part of delamination plane is thicker, the effect of shear deformation on total energy release rate is increased. Beam-type bend specimen men may be applied to obtain informations on the mixed-mode interlaminar fracture behavior of laminated composites.
Exact analytical solutions for in-plane static problems of planar curved beams with variable curvatures and variable cross-sections are derived by using the initial value method. The governing equations include the axial extension and shear deformation effects. The fundamental matrix required by the initial value method is obtained analytically. Then, the displacements, slopes and stress resultants are found analytically along the beam axis by using the fundamental matrix. The results are given in analytical forms. In order to show the advantages of the method, some examples are solved and the results are compared with the existing results in the literature. One of the advantages of the proposed method is that the high degree of statically indeterminacy adds no extra difficulty to the solution. For some examples, the deformed shape along the beam axis is determined and plotted and also the slope and stress resultants are given in tables.
Equations of motion of rotating cantilever curved beams are derived based on a dynamic modeling method developed in this paper. The Kane's method is employed to derive the equations of motion. Different from the classical linear modeling method which employs two cylindrical deformation variables, the present modeling method employs a non-cylindrical variable along with a cylindrical variable to describe the elastic deformation. The derived equations (governing the stretching and the bending motions) are coupled but linear. So they can be directly used for the vibration analysis. The coupling effect between the stretching and the bending motions which could not be considered in the conventional modeling method is considered in this modeling method. The natural frequencies of the rotating curved beams versus the rotating speed are calculated for various radii of curvature and hub radius ratios.
Based on a 405m high super-tall building, the influence of outriggers, different shapes and layouts of structural plane and elevation on structural efficiency under lateral forces is studied in this paper. A calculation formula concerning the structural efficiency is given. The study shows that structural efficiency can be improved by triangulating the plane shape, using mega columns, the peripherization of the plane layout, tapering the elevation shape and setting bracing structure in the elevation. The arrangement of outriggers between the core tube and flange frame can reduce the shear lag effect in order to improve structural efficiency. The essence of improving structural efficiency of super-tall buildings is to maximize the plane bending stiffness and to make its deformation approach to plane section assumption.
