Purpose: The aim of this study was to present specific criteria for setting goals for hand rehabilitation by comparing the degree of difference in grip force, coordination, and dexterity between the dominant and non-dominant hand according to gender. Methods: We recruited 100 healthy adults in their 20s and 30s. A handheld digital dynamometer was used to evaluate the grip force of each of the dominant and non-dominant hand, a chopsticks manipulation test was used to evaluate coordination, and the Purdue Pegboard test was used to evaluate agility. Results: In all subjects, the grip force, coordination, and dexterity showed statistically significant difference (p <0.01) between the dominant and non-dominant hand. In the comparison according to gender, both male and female dominant and non-dominant hands showed statistically significant differences in grip force, coordination, and dexterity (p <0.01). In the comparison according to grip force, there was a statistically significant difference between the dominant and non-dominant hand, and men showed stronger result values in both hands compared to women (p <0.01). In the comparison according to coordination, there was no statistically significant difference between the dominant and non-dominant hand in men and women (p >0.05). In the comparison according to dexterity, there was a statistically significant difference between the dominant and non-dominant hand, and women were shown to be faster in performance time with both hands, compared to men (p <0.01). Conclusion: Differences according to gender exist in grip force and dexterity but not coordination, and differences between dominant and non-dominant hand exists across all measurements. The results suggest setting a recovery goal according to dominance and gender during rehabilitation of hand function.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine effects of acupuncture by needle manipulation at $LR1{\cdot}Kl1$ on the blood pressure, plasma levels of ANP(atrial natriuretic peptide), renin and cardiomegalic index in hypertensive rat Induced by two kidney one clip(2K1C). Material and methods : The groups divided into 7 groups; Control, no treatment. Acu-1,acupuncture at $LR1{\cdot}Kl1$ bilaterally and the needle was twirled and rotated forward with the thumb of the right hand 6 times. Acu-2, acupuncture at $LR1{\cdot}Kl1$ bilaterally and the needle was twirled and rotated forward with the forefinger of the right hand 6 times. Acu-3, acupuncture at $LR1{\cdot}Kl1$ bilaterally and the needle was inserted in the opposite direction(body direction) as the channel runs, Acu-4, acupuncture at $LR1{\cdot}Kl1$ bilaterally, the needle was inserted in the opposite direction(body direction) as the channel runs and the needle was twirled and rotated forward with the forefinger of the right hand 6 times. The acupuncture executed 5times for 2 weeks. Results : Systolic blood pressure was decreased significantly in Acu-2, Acu-3 and Acu-4. Plasma renin was decreased significantly in Acu-2 and Acu-4. Plasma ANP was increased significantly in Acu-2, however was decreased significantly in Acu-4. Cardiac hypertrophy index was decreased significantly in Acu-1, Acu-2, Acu-3 and Acu-4. Conclusions : These results suggest that acupuncture by needle manipulation at $LR1{\cdot}Kl1$ is effective in hypertension by renal blood problem.
Although a hand haptic interaction which provides direct and natural sensation is the most natural way of interacting with VR environment, the hand haptic interaction has still limitations with respect to the complexity of articulated hand and related hardware capabilities. Particularly, virtual assembly simulation which refers to the verification process of digital mockup in product development lifecycle is one of the most challenging topics in virtual reality applications. However, hand haptic interaction is considered as a big obstacle, because difficulty initial grasping and non-dextrous manipulation remain as unsolved problems. In this paper, we propose that common hand haptic interactions involves two separate stages with different aspects. We present the hand haptic interaction method enables us to stably grasp a virtual object at initial grasping and delicately manipulate an object at task operating by one's intention. Therefore, proposed method provides the robustness using grasping quality and dextrous manipulation using physically simulation. We conducted experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed method under different display environments -monoscopic and stereoscopic. From 2-way ANOVA test, we show that the proposed method satisfies two aspects of hand haptic interaction. Finally, we demonstrated an actual application of various assembly simulation for relatively complex models.
At this time, the two main techniques for achieving web personalization assistant systems generally concern direct manipulation and software agents. While both direct manipulation and software agents are intended for permitting user to complete tasks rapidly, efficiently, and easily, their methodologies are different. The central debate involving these web personalization techniques originates from the amount of control that each allows to, or holds back from, the users. Direct manipulation can provide users with comprehensibel, predictable and controllable user interfaces that give them a feeling of accomplishnent and responsibility. On the other hand, the intelligent software components, the agents, can assist users with artificial intelligence by monitoring or retrieving personal histories or behaviors. In this empirical study, two web personalization assistant systems are evaluated. One of them, WebPersonalizer, is an agent based user personalization tool; the other, AntWorld, is a collaborative recommendation tool which provides direct manipulation interfaces. Through this empirical study, we have focused on two different paradigms as web personalization assistant systems : direct manipulation and software agents. Each approach has its own advantages and disadvantages. We also provide the experimental result that is worth referring for developers of electronic commerce system and suggest the methodologies for conveniently retrieving necessary information based on their personal needs.
This paper aims at providing a shooter game interface which enhances the game's realism by recognizing user's hand gestures using the Leap Motion. In this paper, we implemented the functions such as shooting, moving, viewpoint change, and zoom in/out, which are necessary in shooter games, and confirmed through user test that the game interface using familiar and intuitive hand gestures is superior to the conventional mouse/keyboard in terms of ease-to-manipulation, interest, extendability, and so on. Specifically, the user satisfaction index(1~5) was 3.02 on average when using the mouse/keyboard interface and 3.57 on average when using the proposed hand gesture interface.

To realize a robot hand interacting like a human hand, there are many tactile sensors sensing normal force, shear force, torque, shape, roughness and temperature. This sensing signal is essential to manipulate object accurately with robot hand. In particular, slip sensors make manipulation more accurate and breakless to object. Up to now several slip sensors were developed and applied to robot hand. Many of them used complicate algorithm and signal processing with vibration data. In this paper, we developed novel principle slip sensor using separation layer. These two layers are moved from each other when slip occur. Developed sensor can sense slip signal by measuring this relative displacement between two layers. Also our principle makes slip signal decoupled from normal force and shear force without other sensors. The sensor was fabricated using the NBR(acrylo-nitrile butadiene rubber) and the Ecoflex as substrate and a paper as dielectric. To verify our sensor, slip experiment and normal force decoupling test were conducted.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to provide the material about the treatment effect of hand function training and writing training being performed as a part of treatment to improve the function of the non-dominant hand of the patients whose dominant hand is damaged and thus need to improve their non-dominant hand's function. Method : During one month of November, 2013, this study randomly chose five study subjects for hand function training, five for writing training, and ten of control group from 20 normal male and female adults going to K Univ. in Busan. All study subjects fully understood all of the training course, agreed to take the test in this study, and volunteered to participate in the test. Each training was performed five times for two weeks, 30 minutes each time. For measurement, Purdue pegboard was used to look into the change of hand dexterity. To investigate an improvement in hand function through hand function training and writing training, this study conducted early evaluation before training, interim evaluation, and final evaluation. Result : First, according to the comparison of dominant hand dexterity by group and by method during a training period, the groups of hand function training and of writing training improved dominant hand dexterity more than the control group. Secondly, according to the comparison of non-dominant hand dexterity by group during a training period, the groups of hand function training and of writing training improved dexterity more than the control group. According to the comparison of non-dominant hand dexterity by method during a training period, there was no big difference in dexterity between the groups of hand function training and of writing training and the control group. But, the group of hand function training showed a further improvement. Thirdly, according to the comparison of both-hand dexterity by group and by method during a training period, the groups of hand function training and of writing training improved both-hand dexterity more than the control group. Fourthly, according to the comparison of both-hand handling ability by group and by method during a training period, the groups of hand function training and of writing training improved both-hand handling ability more than the control group. Conclusion : Given the study result, it is considered that hand function training and writing training help brain damaged patients improve their hand function for their daily activity. And it will be meaningful to research brain damaged patients' motor skills after their brain damage, and the patients who have low abilities of visual perception and cognition. In the future, it will be necessary to secure more study subjects and perform systematic training during a sufficient test period.
The present study approached the characteristics of various space compositions in contemporary residential architecture through the concept of ex-formality, and found that ex-formal spaces are composed through the variation of floor, wall, ceiling or roof and derived four types of ex-formal space composition - ex-cubic space composition using folding, plastic space composition using the plasticity of concrete, atypical space composition using geometric manipulation, and non linear space composition using digital technology. Based on this, additionally, we derived elements expressing the characteristics of ex-formal space composition, which are obliqueness, inclination, flexibility in ex-cubic space composition using folding, plasticity and fluidity in plastic space composition using the plasticity of concrete, ex-construction, dynamism and asymmetry in atypical space composition using geometric manipulation, and flexibility, fluidity, self similarity and plasticity in non linear space composition using digital technology. On the other hand, this study purposed to help understand various space expression patterns of contemporary residential architecture by analyzing how these types of ex-formal space composition and polysemous expression characteristics have been represented in contemporary residential architecture since the 1990s.

Objectives : This study aims to educate clinical doctors of the valuable practice of Manipulative Therapy(MT) as an opportunity for evidence-based medicine. Consequently it also serves to review the effectiveness and safety of MT. Methods : The literature studies of overseas were done by Cochrane Library and Medline website; those of domestic researches were completed by utilizing the sources which are gained from KERIS, KISS, DBpia, Kisti, and domestic institutes related with MT. Results : Eight papers related to the effectiveness of MT were published in South Korea, which concluded with the positive effects of MT. None of them are, however, well-designed randomized controlled trials(RCT). On the other hand, fifteen cases of nine articles indicate the adverse reaction of MT, and numbers of the researches in overseas revealed the side effects of MT in order of cervical, lumbar, and thoracic vertebrae. A vascular adverse reaction such as vertebral and carotid artery dissection was a highly reported cervical adverse reaction; in the thoracic and lumbar regions, neurological adverse reaction in terms of disc hemiation was frequently discovered. Conclusions : Henceforth, highly qualitative studies are required developing the effective outcomes and preventing any possible complications of MT. Therefore, systemic curriculums in institutions and sufficient clinical training in the filed are strongly recommended.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of warming and precipitation manipulation on seasonal changes in fine root production (FRP) and fine root mortality (FRM) of 33-month-old Pinus densiflora seedlings for two years. The seedlings in warmed plots were warmed with $3.0^{\circ}C$ higher using infrared heaters. The air temperature of warmed (TW) plots was set to increase by $3^{\circ}C$ compared to temperature control (TC) plots, and the three precipitation manipulation consisted of precipitation decrease (-30%; PD), precipitation increase (+30%; PI) and precipitation control (0%; PC). FRP ($mm\;mm^{-2}\;day^{-1}$) was significantly altered by only precipitation manipulation (PC: 3.57, PD: 4.59, PI: 3.02), while warming had no significant effect on the FRP and FRM. Meanwhile, interactions between warming and precipitation manipulation and seasonal changes had no significant effects on FRP and FRM. However, the influences of seasonal changes in soil temperature and soil moisture on FRP and FRM were different according to warming. In TW plots, FRP showed a positive relationship with soil temperature, and FRM showed a negative relationship with soil moisture. On the other hand, in the TC plots, FRP showed a positive relationship with soil moisture, and there were no relationships between FRM and soil temperature and moisture. These results indicate that the climate factors that affect FRP and FRM might vary as the warming progresses.
