GB-SAR (Ground-Based Synthetic Aperture Radar)

InSAR (Interferometry SAR) technique is a technique that uses complex data to obtain phase difference information from two or more SAR image data, and enables high-resolution image extraction, surface change detection, elevation measurement, and glacial change observation. In many countries, research on the InSAR technique is being conducted in various fields of study such as volcanic activity detection, glacier observation in Antarctica, and ground subsidence analysis. In this study, a case of large ground settlement due to groundwater level drawdown during tunnelling was introduced, and ground settlement analyses using InSAR technique and numerical analysis method were compared. The maximum settlement and influence radius estimated by the InSAR technique and numerical method were found to be quite similar, which confirms the reliability of the InSAR technique. Through this case study, it was found that the InSAR technique reliable to use for estimating ground settlement and can be used as a key technology to identify the long-term ground settlement history in the absence of measurement data.
This paper presents the results of the ocean surface current velocity estimation using 6 Radarsat-1 SAR images acquired in west coastal area near Incheon. We extracted the surface velocity from SAR images based on the Doppler shift approach in which the azimuth frequency shift is related to the motion of surface target in the radar direction. The Doppler shift was measured by the difference between the Doppler centroid estimated in the range-compressed, azimuth-frequency domain and the nominal Doppler centroid used during the SAR focusing process. The extracted SAR current velocities were statistically compared with the current velocities from the high frequency(HF) radar in terms of averages, standard deviations, and root mean square errors. The problem of the unreliable nominal Doppler centroid for the estimation of the SAR current velocity was corrected by subtracting the difference of averages between SAR and HF-radar current velocities from the SAR current velocity. The corrected SAR current velocity inherits the average of HF-radar data while maintaining high-resolution nature of the original SAR data.
Since Seasat SAR mission in 1978, SAR has become one of the most important surface imaging tools in satellite remote sensing SAR achieves high resolution by signal processing synthesizing a larger aperture. Therefore, SAR signal processing along with antenna technology has been centered upon SAR technologies. Thus interpreters of SAR imagery as well as those who involved in signal processing require the knowledge of the principal SAR processing algorithm. Although the conventional range-Doppler approach has been widely adopted by many SAR processors, azimuth compression including the range migration has been problematic. The recent development of the wavenumber domain approace is able to provide high precision SAR focusing algorithm. Compared with the wavenumber domain algorithm derived by applying Born (first) approximation, the transfer function of the conventional range-Doppler algorithm accounts only for the first order approximation of the exact transfer function. The results of a simulation and an actual test using airborne C-band SAR configuration demonstrate the dxcellent performance of the wavenumber domain algorithm.

Recently, the SAR-GMTI mode is becoming increasingly essential in airborne radar systems. While SAR requires wideband waveforms for high resolution imaging, GMTI requires narrowband waveforms for doppler processing, which makes general LFM waveforms difficult to use for SAR-GMTI. This paper analyses the FJB(Frequency Jump Burst) waveform, which is studied for the SAR-GMTI waveform, and presents the method for the pulse compression and SAR image formation using FJB waveforms. Simulation results show that there is little difference in performances between the FJB waveform and the LFM waveform.
SeNtinel's Application Platform (SNAP) is an open source software developed by the European Space Agency and consists of several toolboxes that process data from Sentinel satellite series, including SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) and optical satellites. Among them, S1TBX (Sentinel-1 ToolBoX)is mainly used to process Sentinel-1A/BSAR images and interferometric techniques. It provides flowchart processing method such as Graph Builder, and has convenient functions including automatic downloading of DEM (Digital Elevation Model) and image mosaicking. Therefore, if computer memory is sufficient, InSAR (Interferometric SAR) and DInSAR (Differential InSAR) perform smoothly and are widely used recently in the world through rapid upgrades. S1TBX also includes existing SAR data processing functions, and since version 5, the processing capability of KOMPSAT-5 has been added. This paper shows an example of processing the interference technique of KOMPSAT-5 SAR image using S1TBX of SNAP. In the open mine of Tavan Tolgoi in Mongolia, the difference between DEM obtained in KOMPSAT-5 in 2015 and SRTM 1sec DEM obtained in 2000 was analyzed. It was found that the maximum depth of 130 meters was excavated and the height of the accumulated ore is over 70 meters during 15 years. Tidal and topographic InSAR signals were observed in the glacier area near Jangbogo Antarctic Research Station, but SNAP was not able to treat it due to orbit error and DEM error. In addition, several DInSAR images were made in the Iraqi desert region, but many lines appearing in systematic errors were found on coherence images. Stacking for StaMPS application was not possible due to orbit error or program bug. It is expected that SNAP can resolve the problem owing to a surge in users and a very fast upgrade of the software.

Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR) is an active microwave instrument that performs high-resolution observation under almost all weather conditions. Although there are many advantages of SAR instrument, many complicated steps are involved in order to generate SAR image products. Many research and algorithms have been proposed to process radar signal and to increase the quality of SAR products. However, it is hard to find research which compare the quality of SAR products generated with different algorithms and processing methods. In our previous research, a SAR processing s/w was developed for a ground station. In addition, quality assessment procedures and their test parameters inside a SAR processor was proposed. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the quality of SAR images generated from the developed SAR processing s/w. However, If there are no direct measurements such as radar reflector or scattering field measurement values it is difficult to compare SAR images generated with different methods. An alternative procedures and parameters for SAR image quality evaluation are presented and the problems involved in the comparison methods are discussed. Experiments based on real data have been conducted to evaluate and analyze quality of SAR images.

A synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system can provide all-weather, day and night imaging capability, and thus, is very useful in surveillance for both civil and military applications. In this paper, the X-band spaceborne SAR system design procedure is introduced with the key design parameters for mission and system requirements characterized by the small satellite platform. The SAR imaging mode design technique is presented, and the design results are analyzed for standard mode performance evaluation. In line with the system requirements, the X-band SAR payload and ground reception/processing sub-systems are presented with the key design results and image applications examples. The designed small satellite SAR system shows the wide range of imaging capability, and proves to be an effective surveillance system in light-weight, high-performance and cost-effective points of view.
This study mainly focuses on evaluating how the triangular training operator could improve classification accuracy in SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) and VIR FCC(Visible Infra-red, False Colour Composite). The techniques for the determination of the most informative SAR/VIR combinations in the triangular space diagram, as developed tv the author of the paper, are given and the results obtained are presented. The SAR alone, VIR alone and SAR/VIR FCC classification showed trends for gradual improvement of accuracy. Accuracy distribution pattern for individual classes could be explained closely related to SAR/VIR signature components in the process of the triangular synergistic training. Due to contribution of SAR signature in training samples, it was possible to isolate major terrain features such as cloud cover area and roughness target with acceptable spatial precision. It is anticipated that this research output could be used as a valuable reference for distribution trends of classification accuracy obtained by triangular channel space based training in synergistic application.
