In-situ measurement was made to evaluate chiller performance and thermal storage density of an ice thermal storage system. The system belonged to a big hotel and the measurement was conducted during late October. Owing to very small cooling load, the data logging was possible for a single thermal storage cycle. However, operation history of the chiller showed a relatively good spectrum of data for performance evaluation. COP and thermal storage density were calculated. The COP at full load was about 4.07, which was lower than $4.8\~6.4$ of new chillers. The measured storage density was about $10.9RT-h/m^3\;(=152MJ/m^3)$, which also was lower than a criterion of normal performance $(above\;13.0RT-h/m^3\;or\;181MJ/m^3)$. The study result provides technical basis for quantitative ESCO business scenario.
In-situ diagnosis of chiller performance is an essential step for energy saving business. The main purpose of the in-situ diagnosis is to predict the performance of a target chiller. Many models based on thermodynamics have been proposed for the purpose. However, they have to be modified from chiller to chiller and require profound knowledge of thermodynamics and heat transfer. This study focuses on developing an easy-to-use diagnostic technique that is based on adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). The effect of sample data distribution on training the ANFIS is investigated. It is found that the data sampling over 10 days during summer results in a reliable ANFIS whose performance prediction error is within measurement errors. The reliable ANFIS makes it possible to prepare an energy audit and suggest an energy saving plan based on the diagnosed chilled water supply system.

In situ TEM heating experiments utilizing kaolinite powder samples result in the following facts. (1) The water recirculation system adopted in the Gatan's heating holder is required to prevent specimen drift above $500^{\circ}C$. (2) Since the degree of phase changes depends on the thickness of powders below $600^{\circ}C$, examinations of both thin and thick specimens are required. (3) Sample preparation using Mo-grids is required for TEM heating experiments above $900^{\circ}C$. At these temperature ranges the effect of heating rate and holding time on the phase transition process increases drastically, so that a programmed temperature control is required. (4) TEM heating experiments of the embedded powders by epoxy for the cross-sectional view was limited due to the severe epoxy movement during heating above $300^{\circ}C$. Better methods of sample preparation are required to overcome this problem.

As the wafer geometric requirements continuously complicated and minutes in tens of nanometers, the expectation of real-time add-on sensors for in-situ plasma process monitoring is rapidly increasing. Various industry applications, utilizing plasma impedance monitor (PIM) and optical emission spectroscopy (OES), on etch end point detection, etch chemistry investigation, health monitoring, fault detection and classification, and advanced process control are good examples. However, process monitoring in semiconductor manufacturing industry requires non-invasiveness. The hypothesis behind the optical monitoring of plasma induced ion current is for the monitoring of plasma induced charging damage in non-invasive optical way. In plasma dielectric via etching, the bombardment of reactive ions on exposed conductor patterns may induce electrical current. Induced electrical charge can further flow down to device level, and accumulated charges in the consecutive plasma processes during back-end metallization can create plasma induced charging damage to shift the threshold voltage of device. As a preliminary research for the hypothesis, we performed two phases experiment to measure the plasma induced current in etch environmental condition. We fabricated electrical test circuits to convert induced current to flickering frequency of LED output, and the flickering frequency was measured by high speed optical plasma monitoring system (OPMS) in 10 kHz. Current-frequency calibration was done in offline by applying stepwise current increase while LED flickering was measured. Once the performance of the test circuits was evaluated, a metal pad for collecting ion bombardment during plasma etch condition was placed inside etch chamber, and the LED output frequency was measured in real-time. It was successful to acquire high speed optical emission data acquisition in 10 kHz. Offline measurement with the test circuitry was satisfactory, and we are continuously investigating the potential of real-time in-situ plasma induce current measurement via OPMS.

Each river confluence has the inherent hydraulic and mixing characteristics coming from its bathymetry and topography. It is necessary to make the measurement covering the spatial extent of studying area in order to catch these 2-dimensional intrinsic characteristics. This study focuses to investigate the hydraulic and mixing characteristics at the confluence of Nakdong and Geumho River, from field measurement of flow, water quality, and suspended particle distribution with ADCP (Riversurveyor M9), multi-parameter water quality sonde (YSI6600V2), and submersible system for in-situ observations of particle size distribution and volume concentration (LISST : Laser In-Situ Scattering & Transmissometry), respectively. From the results, it can be found that the field measurement of suspended particle and water quality distribution can be the useful approach to catch the hydraulic and mixing characteristics at a river confluence.

Breath analysis using a portable device is better than the classical breath analysis system in terms of installation and operation. There is an increasing need to develop cost-effective equipment for testing gas sensors from the viewpoint of functionalities that can be applied applicable to portable devices. In the present study, an economical gas chamber for in-situ gas measurement is implemented with a single gas chamber without using expensive gas storage and control equipment; the gas response characteristics are analyzed using the above-described chamber. The main features of the implemented gas chamber are simple injection procedure, improved gas diffusion, easy measurement and cleaning, support for low-power mode measurement function for portable devices, and open source platform. Moreover, an analysis of gas response characteristics based on changes in sensor voltage show that the sensitivity and 90% response time are affected by the sensor voltage. Furthermore, the sensitivity graph has an inflection point in a specific range. The gas sensor applied in this study showed fast response speed and high sensitivity for sensor voltages of 3.0-3.5 V, regardless of the concentration of acetone gas, the target gas used in this study.

A new monitoring system has been developed for in-situ and realtime measurement of ozone transport in unsaturated porous media using a fiber optic sensor. The calibration of the fiber optic transflection dip probe (FOTDP) system was successfully carried out at various ozone concentrations using a column with length of 30 cm and diameter of 5 cm packed with glass beads, which don't react with gaseous ozone. The breakthrough curves (BTCs) of ozone was obtained by converting the normalized intensity into ozone concentration. The FOTDP system reflected the ideal transport phenomena of gas phase ozone at various flow rates. The FOTDP system worked well for in-situ monitoring of gas phase ozone at various water saturations and in presence of SOM. However, the FOTDP system did not measure the ozone concentration at more than 70% water saturation.
Knowledge of ground thermal properties is most important for the proper design of BHE(borehole heat exchanger) systems. The configure type, pipe size and thermal performance of the BHE is highly dependent on the ground source heatpump system-efficiency and instruction cost. Thermal response tests with mobile measurement devices were developed primarily for in-situ determination of design data for Standing Column Well apply. The main purpose has been to determine in-situ values of effective ground thermal conductivity and thermal resistance, including the effect of ground-water flow and natural convection in the boreholes. The test rig is set up on a some trailer, and contains a sub-circulation pump, a boiler, temperature sensors, flow meter and a data logger for recording the temperature and circulation fluid flow data. A constant heating power is injected into the SCW through the test rig and the resulting temperature change in the SCW is recorded. The recorded temperature data are analysed with a line-source model, which gives the effective in-situ values of rock thermal conductivity and thermal resistance of SCW.

Gas piping systems in power plants and factories are always influenced by the mechanical vibrations of rotational machines such as pumps, blowers, and compressors. Unusual vibrations in a gas piping system influence possible leakages of liquids or gases, which can lead to large explosive accidents. Real-time measurements of unusual vibrations in piping systems in situ prohibit them from being possible leakages owing to the repeated fatigue of vibrations. In this paper, a non-contact 3-dimensional measurement system that can detect the vibrations of a solid body and monitor its vibrational modes is introduced. To detect the displacements of a body, a stereoscopic camera system is used, through which the major vibration types of solid bodies (such as X-axis-major, Y-axis-major, and Z-axis-major vibrations) can be monitored. In order to judge the vibration types, an artificial neural network is used. The measurement system consists of a host computer, stereoscopic camera system (two-camera system, high-speed high-resolution camera), and a measurement target. Through practical application on a flat plate, the measured data from the non-contact measurement system showed good agreement with those from the original vibration mode produced by an accelerator.
