HO$_2$ radical plays pivotal roles in the tropospheric $O_3$ formation chemistry. This radical oxidizes NO to NO$_2$ and thus HO$_2$ radical can lead to in-situ ozone formation. Numerous methods have been tried to measure concentrations of atmospheric HO$_2$ in gas phase. Detecting methods applied in the air are a chemical amplifier (Cantrell et al., 1996), FAGE (Fluorescence Assay with Gas Expansion) (Hard et al., 1984), and LIF (Laser-induced Fluorescence) (Stevens et al., 1994). These methods have been limited because of low sensitivity and interferences such as $O_3$, NO, and itself (Stevens et al.,1994). (omitted)

This study surveys the microscopic wear of CVD TiN coatings in repeated sliding, using the SEM Tribosystem as in-situ system. According to the research, the depth of wear groove and the specific wear amount are changed by the transition of the microscopic wear mode. This investigation leads to the fact that the change of wear characteristics produces the transition of the wear mode. In this survey, four modes are observed for CVD TiN coatings with the thickness of 1.6$\mu\textrm{m}$: ploughing, powder formation, flake formation and coating delimitation. The microscopic wear properties is quantitatively evaluated in terms with the microscopic wear mode and the specific wear amount. These relationships prove that the observation of wear modes with a SEM Tribosystem is useful to evaluate wear properties.
Epitaxial ultrathin films of $CoSi_2$ and double heteroepitaxial structure of Si/$CoSi_2$/Si(lll) were prepared on Si(111)-$7\times{7}$ substrate by in situ solid-phase epitaxy in a ultrahigh vacuum(LHV). The phase, chemical composition, crystallinity, and the microsructure of the Si/$CoSi_2$/Si(lll) interface were investigated by 2-MeV $^4He^{++}$ ion backscattering spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The growth mode of the Co film was the Stransky-Krastanov type with texture when the substrate temperature was room temperature. A-type $CoSi_2$ ultrathin film was grown by deposition of about 50A Co on Si(ll1)-$7\times{7}$ substrate followed by in situ annealing at $700^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. The matching face relationships were $CoSi_2$[110]//Si[110] and $CoSi_2$(002)//Si(002) with no misorientation angle. The A-type $CoSi_2$/Si(lll) interface was abrupt and coherent. The best epi-Si/epi-$CoSi_2$2(A-type)/Si(lll) structure was obtained by deposition of Si film on the CoSii at $500^{\circ}C$ followed by in situ annealing at $700^{\circ}C$ for 10 min in UHV.

Prefabricated Board Drains (PBDs) recently become more widely used than conventional sand drains in improving soft ground because the PBD is more time and cost effective. The performance of PBDs is affected by disturbance in the adjacent soil formation during inserting mandrels, the intrusion of fine particles into filter fabric, and necking of the drain by excessive lateral pressure especially occurring in very deep clay formation such as the Busan New Port site. In this study, the PBD with double-core is introduced, which seems to overcome the shortcomings of usual single-core PBDs. An in-situ test program was established in the Busan New Port site, in which a set of the double-core PBDs and the single-core PBDs was installed to compare the efficiency of each of the drains. The discharge capacity of the double-core and the single-core PBDs was compared for various confining pressures in the modified Delft test and the chamber test. A series of CRS consolidation tests was performed in order to obtain profiles of void ratio-effective stress and void ratio-permeability relationships in the Busan New Port site that are used as input date in performing a numerical program ILLICON. The numerically simulated settlements of ground surface in the test site are in good agreement with those of in-situ measurements. In addition, the performance of the double-core and single-core PBDs has been experimentally and numerically compared in this paper.

This study was conducted to investigate the in situ formation of amorphous Fe oxides as a stabilization technology in As-contaminated soil. After addition of ferric nitrate and the neutralizing agent, most of extractable fractions of As in soil (i.e., SO42- and PO43--extractable As) was converted into As bound to amorphous Fe oxides. In addition, results of solubility bioavailability research consortium (SBRC) test indicated that a significant amount of As in untreated soil changed to a non-bioaccessible form after stabilization. The reason was attributed to the newly formed amorphous Fe oxides in the stabilized soil, which was confirmed by linear combination of fitting (LCF) using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) analysis. Interestingly, after five months of aging of the stabilized soil, ferrihydrite and schwertmannite newly formed in the soil were transformed to crystalline Fe oxides such as goethite, and further decrease in SBRC extractable fraction of As was observed. The results suggest that co-precipitated As with amorphous Fe oxides can be further immobilized with time, due to the crystallization of amorphous Fe oxides.

Intraneuronal deposition containing $\alpha$-synuclein is implicated in the pathogenesis of synuclein-opathies including Parkinsons disease (PD). Although it has been demonstrated that cytoplas-mic inclusions of wild type $\alpha$-synuclein are observed in the brain of PD patients and that $\alpha$-synuclein mutations such as A30P and A53T accelerate aggregate formation, the exact mech-anism by which $\alpha$-synuclein forms insoluble aggregates is still controversial. In the present study, to understand the possible involvement of tissue transglutaminase (tTG) in aggregate formation of $\alpha$-synuclein, SH-SY5Y cell lines stably expressing wild type or mutant (A30P or A53T) $\alpha$-synuclein were created and aggregate formation of $\alpha$-synuclein was observed upon activation of tTG. The data demonstrated that $\alpha$-synuclein negligibly interacted with tTG and that activation of tTG did not result in the aggregate formation of $\alpha$-synuclein in SH-SY5Y cells overexpressing either wild type or mutant $\alpha$-synuclein. In addition, $\alpha$-synuclein was not modi-fied by activated tTG in situ. These data suggest that tTG is unlikely to be a contributing factor to the formation of aggregates of $\alpha$-synuclein in a stable cell model.
Dispersions of non-soluble ceramic particles in a metallic matrix can enhance the strength and heat resistance of materials. With the advent of mechanical alloying it became possible to put the theoretical concept into practice by incorporating very fine particles in a flirty uniform distribution into often oxidation- and corrosion- resistant metal matrices. e.g. superalloys. The present paper will give an overview about the mechanical alloying technique as a dry, high energy ball milling process for producing composite metal powders with a fine controlled microstructure. The common way is milling of a mixture of metallic and nonmetallic powders (e.g. oxides. carbides, nitrides, borides) in a high energy ball mill. The heavy mechanical deformation during milling causes also fracture of the ceramic particles to be distributed homogeneously by further milling. The mechanisms of the process are described. To obtain a homogeneous distribution of nano-sized dispersoids in a more ductile matrix (e.g. aluminium-or copper based alloys) a reaction milling is suitable. Dispersoid can be formed in a solid state reaction by introducing materials that react with the matrix either during milling or during a subsequent heat treatment. The pre-conditions for obtaining high quality materials, which require a homogeneous distribution of small dis-persoids, are: milling behaviour of the ductile phase (Al, Cu) will be improved by the additives (e.g. graphite), homogeneous introduction of the additives into the granules is possible and the additive reacts with the matrix or an alloying element to form hard particles that are inert with respect to the matrix also at elevated temperatures. The mechanism of the in-situ formation of dispersoids is described using copper-based alloys as an example. A comparison between the in-situ formation of dispersoids (TiC) in the copper matrix and the milling of Cu-TiC mixtures is given with respect to the microstructure and properties, obtained.

In addition to the catalysts' activity and selectivity, the deactivation of catalysts during use is of practical importance. It is crucial to understand the phenomena of the deactivation to predict the loss of activity during catalyst usage so that the high operational costs associated with catalyst replacement can be reduced. In this study, the activity of Ru catalysts, such as nanoparticles (3~6 nm) and polycrystalline thin film (50 nm), have been investigated under CO oxidation and oxidative/reductive reaction conditions at various temperatures with the ambient pressure X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS). With APXPS, the surface oxides on the catalyst are measured and monitored in-situ. It was found that the Ru film exhibited faster oxidation-and-reduction compared to that of nanoparticles showing mild oxidative-and-reductive characteristics. Additionally, the larger Ru nanoparticles showed a higher degree of oxide formation at all temperatures, suggesting a higher stability of the oxide. These observations are in agreement with the catalytic activity of Ru catalysts. The loss of activity of Ru films is correlated with bulk oxide formation, which is inactive in CO oxidation. The Ru nanoparticle, however, does not exhibit deactivation under similar conditions, suggesting that its surface is covered with a highly active ultrathin surface oxide. Since the active oxide is more stable as nanoparticles than as a film, the nanoparticles showed mild oxidative/reductive behavior, as confirmed by APXPS results. We believe these simultaneous observations of both the surface oxide of Ru catalysts and the reactivity in real time enable us to pinpoint the deactivation phenomena more precisely and help in designing more efficient and stable catalytic systems.

Biofilms facilitate communication among microorganisms for nutrients and protect them from predators and harmful chemicals such as antibiotics and detergents. Biofilms can also act as cores for the development of clogs in many agricultural irrigation systems and in porous media. In this study, we deployed glass units at a depth of 20 m below the ground surface in the groundwater-surface water mixing zone, and retrieved them after 4 months to investigate the potential colonization of indigenous microbial community and possible mineral-microbe assemblages. We observed the periodic formation of microbial colonies by fluorescence dye staining and microscopy, and analyzed the composition of the microbial community in both the mineral-microbe aggregates and groundwater, by next generation sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene amplicons using MiSeq platform. During the course of incubation, we observed an increase in both the mineral-microbe aggregates and content of extracellular polymeric substances. Interestingly, the microbial community from the aggregates featured a high abundance of iron redox-related microorganisms such as Geobacter sp., Comamonadaceae sp., and Burkholderiales incertae sedis. Therefore, these microorganisms can potentially produce iron-minerals within the sediment-microbe-associated aggregates, and induce biofilm formation within the groundwater borehole and porous media.
