  • Purpose: For the best possible aesthetic reconstruction after craniofacial bone tumor resection, pasteurization has been adopted to devitalize neoplastic cells while maintaining osteoinductive properties and mechanical strength. This case report aims to demonstrate a long-term follow-up result of a monostotic fibrous dysplasia in frontal bone which was reconstructed by pasteurized tumoral autograft in situ. Methods: A 14-year-old girl presented with a hard, nontender, slowly growing mass of 6-year duration on her left supraorbital area. CT showed $5{\times}4{\times}3cm$ sized well defined bony mass confined to frontal bone with heterogeneous density. Tumor was excised completely through bicoronal approach and reimplanted to its original site after pasteurization at $60^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes. The pathologic examination confirmed fibrous dysplasia. Results: She revisited our clinic 5 years later after suffering some assault on her face. On CT examination, pasteurized tumoral autograft was incorporated to host bone except the fractured upper orbital rim without any evidence of recurrence. She has been satisfied with the result. Conclusion: Pasteurization offers a simple, reliable, cosmetic, economic, and durable reconstruction method for craniofacial skeletal tumor. It has advantages of both biologic incorporation ability and mechanical strength without risk of recurrence. So, it should be considered as one of the primary options in benign as well as resectable malignant tumors of craniofacial skeleton.

  • Introduction: Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the skin (LELCS) is a rare cutaneous tumor of low grade malignancy and microscopically resembles lymphoepitheliomatous malignancies in the nasopharynx, palatine tonsils, salivary glands and uterine cervix. LELCS presents as scarlet-colored firm nodules or plaques on the face, scalp, or shoulder of middle-aged to elderly individuals. Material and Methods: A 72 year-old female had complained a papule like lesion with intermittent pruritis on the left temple for 2 years. But the lesion was changed to scarlet-colored firm nodule with ulceration. The mass was diagnosed as LELCS on the biopsy. And to confirm that the mass is not metastatic lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma from other sites or direct tumor extension from the nasopharynx, selective radiographic and laboratory tests were done carefully. Results: Wide excision was performed with general endotracheal anesthesia. The tumor is composed of island of large epithelial cells surrounded by as dense infiltrate of lymphocytes. Immunohistochemical staining with cytokeratin and epithelial membrane antigen(EMA), the tumor cells were positive reaction for stain. And Epstein-Barr virus genome was not detected by in situ hybridization. So, the tumor was confirmed as LELCS. Conclusion: LELCS was described by Swanson at 1988, but has not been reported in the field of plastic surgery of Korea. We report a case of primary LELCS that occurred in the left temple with clinical characteristics, histologic features and references.

  • Edible tunicate Halocynthia roretzi, one of the most commercially important aquatic organisms in Korea, has been killed by tunic softness syndrome since last decade. The intracellular protistan parasite observed by the transmission electron microscope in hemocytes of the tunicate was considered to be the causative agent of the mass mortality. The goal of the present work is to examine the characteristic features of the parasite by identifying the 18S rDNA sequences of the parasite. The experiments conducted include amplification of presumptive 18S rDNA from diseased tunicate tissues with UNonMet-PCR and sequencing the product. A preliminary phylogenetic analysis was performed on the presumptive parasite rDNA. A digoxigenin labeled DNA probe was designed on the basis of the sequences of rDNA. Dig-ISH assay was conducted to diagnose the protistan parasite. A PCR using UNonMet-PCR primer generated 595 bp SSU rDNA fragment. Subsequently, PCRs with primer pair expended this sequence to 1542 bp. This is the first partial sequences of SSU rDNA gene to be published on the protistan parasite that has presumed causing the mass mortality of tunicate. Since the Dig-ISH technique demonstrated the presence of infection in hemocytes on the all host tissues, the fragment was confirmed to be the intracellular protistan parasite SSU rDNA. A phylogenetic analysis suggested that the protistan parasite may be a unique eukaryote that is closely related to Apicomplexa.

  • Although many studies of nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems have reported that clearcutting creates increased organic matter decomposition and nitrogen (N) mineralization in soils, little is known about the change of these factors following various levels of canopy removal. A series of experimental plots with four levels of canopy cover, i.e., clearcut, 25%, 75%, and uncut, was established in northern red oak (Quercus rubra L.) stands in northern Lover Michigan, U.S.A. I examined decomposition of cellulose filter papers and N mineralization using an in situ soil incubation technique in the top 15cm of mineral soil during the second growing season (1992, May-October) following stand manipulation. Mass loss from cellulose filter papers was more rapid in the canopy removal treatments than in the uncut treatment. similarly, net N mineralization was significantly greater in the canopy removal treatments than in the uncut treatment. There was no significant difference in net N mineralization rates among the three levels of canopy removal. Net N mineralization for the growing season was 58 kg/ha for the clearcut, 54 kg/ha for the 25% canopy cover, 51 kg/ha for the 75% canopy cover, and 22 kg/ha for the uncut treatment. These results indicated that even only small amounts of canopy removal (leaving 75% canopy cover) let to substantial increases of cellulose decomposition and the amount of available soil nitrogen.

  • The generalized Hoek-Brown (GHB) criterion, which is recognized as one of the standard failure conditions for rock mass, is specialized for rock engineering applications and covers a wide range of rock mass conditions. Accordingly, many research efforts have been devoted to the incorporation of this criterion into the stability analysis of rock structures. In this study, the slip-line analysis method, which is a kind of elastoplastic analysis method, is combined with the GHB failure criterion to derive analytical equations that can easily calculate the plastic radius and stress distribution in the vicinity of the circular tunnel. In the process of derivation of related formulas, it is assumed that the behavior of rock mass after failure is perfectly plastic and the in-situ stress condition is hydrostatic. In the formulation, it is revealed that the plastic radius can be calculated analytically using the two respective tangential friction angles corresponding to the stress conditions at tunnel wall and elastic-plastic boundary. It is also shown that the plastic radius and stress distribution calculated using the derived analytical equations coincide with the results of Lee & Pietruszczak's numerical method published in 2008. In the latter part of this paper, the influence of the quality of the rock mass on the size of the plastic zone, the stress distribution, and the change of the tangential friction angle was investigated using the derived analytical equations.

  • Odontogenic cysts are relatively common pathologic lesions found in the oral and perioral structures, but the case of squamous cell carcinoma arising from those cysts are very uncommon. After first reported of that case in 1889 by Herman, Schwimmer collected 56 cases of previously reported squamous cell carcinoma arising in residual odontogenic cyst during about past one century. More than 60% of cases of carcinoma developing in odontogenic cysts arising in inflammatory periapical or residual cyst, and these tumors are usually well-differentiated with relatively good prognosis, and often are diagnosed as benign lesion in radiographic or clinical examination, therefore definitive diagnosis must be made by histologic examintation. We report a case and review the literatures, in our case, 78-year old woman were clinically and radiographically diagnosed as residual odontogenic cyst. But in histologic examination after enucleation of lesion, mass of squamous cell carinoma were observed, but in other area, typical cyst wall and lining epithelium were observed. And in some area, carcinoma in situ and invading squamous cell carcinoma into the lining epithelium were also observed.

  • Surge phenomena in the zone of reduced speeds in a system of a nine-stage axial flow compressor coupled with ducts were studied analytically by use of a surge transient simulation code. Main results are as follows. (1) Expansion of apparently stable, non-surge working area of the pressure vs. flow field beyond the initial stage-stall line was predicted by the code in the lower speed region. The area proved analytically to be caused by significantly mismatched stage-working conditions, particularly with the front stages deep in the rotating stall branch of the characteristics, as was already known in situ and in steady-state calculations also. (2) Surge frequencies were found to increase for decreasing compressor speeds as far as the particular compressor system was concerned. (3) The tendency was found to be explained by a newly introduced volume-modified reduced surge frequency. It suggests that the surge frequency is related intimately with the process of emptying and filling of air into the delivery volume. (4) The upstream range of movement of the fluid mass having once passed through the compressor in surge was found to reduce toward the lower speeds, which could have caused additionally the increase in surge frequency. (5) The concept of the volume-modified reduced surge frequency was able to explain, though qualitatively at present, the behaviors of the area-pressure ratio parameter for the stall stagnation boundary proposed earlier by the author.

  • The storage capacity of 3D-NAND flash memory has been enhanced by the multi-layer dielectrics. The deposition process has become more challenging due to the tight process margin and the demand for accurate process control. To reduce product costs and ensure successful processes, process diagnosis techniques incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) have been adopted in semiconductor manufacturing. Recently there is a growing interest in process diagnosis, and numerous studies have been conducted in this field. For higher model accuracy, various process and sensor data are required, such as optical emission spectroscopy (OES), quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS), and equipment control state. Among them, OES is usually used for plasma diagnostic. However, OES data can be distorted by viewport contamination, leading to misunderstandings in plasma diagnosis. This issue is particularly emphasized in multi-dielectric deposition processes, such as oxide and nitride (ON) stack. Thus, it is crucial to understand the potential misunderstandings related to OES data distortion due to viewport contamination. This paper explores the potential for misunderstanding OES data due to data distortion in the ON stack process. It suggests the possibility of excessively evaluating process drift through comparisons with a QMS. This understanding can be utilized to develop diagnostic models and identify the effects of viewport contamination in ON stack processes.

  • The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is oncogenic and can transform B cells from a benign to a malignant phenotype. EBV infection is also associated with lymphoid interstitial pneumonia (LIP). Here, we report the case of a 14-year-old boy who was diagnosed with a latent EBV infection and underlying LIP, without any associated immunodeficiency. He had been EBV-seropositive for 8 years. The first clinical presentations were chronic respiratory symptoms and recurrent pneumonia. The symptoms worsened in the following 2 years. The results of in situ hybridization were positive for EBV, which led to a diagnosis of LIP. The diagnosis was confirmed by the results of a thoracoscopic lung biopsy. The EBV titer of the bronchoalveolar lavage specimens obtained after acyclovir treatment was found to be fluctuating. The patient had latent EBV infection for 8 years, until presented at the hospital with intermittent abdominal pain and distension. Physical examination and pelvic computed tomography revealed a large mesenteric mass. A biopsy of the excised mass led to a diagnosis of Burkitt's lymphoma (BL). The patient received combination chemotherapy for 4 months, consisting of vincristine, methotrexate, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, and prednisolone. He is now tumor-free, with the LIP under control, and is being followed-up at the outpatient clinic. This is the first report of a Korean case of chronic latent EBV infection that developed into LIP and BL in a nonimmunocompromised child.

  • The laboratory and field studies were conducted to identify an optimal injection concentration of nanoscale zero-valent iron particles (NZVI) and to evaluate the applicability of NZVI-based reactive zone technology to the site contaminated with trichloroethylene (TCE) DNAPL (Dense Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid). The laboratory test found an optimal injection concentration of NZVI of 5 g/L that could remove more than 95% of 0.15 mM TCE within 20 days. Eleven test wells were installed at the aquifer that was mainly composed of alluvial and weathered soils at a strong oxic condition with dissolved oxygen concentration of 3.50 mg/L and oxidation-reduction potential of 301 mV. NZVI of total 30 kg were successfully injected using a centrifugal pump. After 60 days from the NZVI injection, 86.2% of the TCE initially present in the groundwater was removed and the mass of TCE removed was 405 g. Nonchlorinated products such as ethane and ethene were detected in the groundwater samples. Based on the increased chloride ion concentration at the site, the mass of TCE removed was estimated to be 1.52 kg. This implied the presence of DNAPL TCE which contributed to a higher estimate of TCE removal than that based on the TCE concentration change.
