Use of GIS for Prioritization and Site Suitability Analysis of Potential Relocation Sites for Military Training Facilities: A Case Study in South Korea

  • The primary purpose of this study was to analyze assessment factors by identifying and prioritizing live fire shooting area requirements using the AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) technique. Derived assessment factors for candidate sites were divided into six categories. Of these, four categories (base-to-range distance, weapon danger area, range terrain, and size) were in the realm of physical geography while the remaining two (land use and proximity to habitation) fell under the general heading of human geography. A case study was also conducted to select several alternative firing ranges using derived factors. The optimal location was analyzed by evaluating the candidate site using each assessment factor. As a result, it was found that assessment factors applying to GIS (Geographic Information System) were able to effectively analyze a suitable location for relocation of the focal training facility, taking into consideration public-safety issues, training requirements, and residents' past and likely future complaints. Through this process, it can prevent the waste of time and effort in determining an optimal location for a live fire shooing range.

Geotechnical Characteristics of Soft Clayey Soil in South Korea (국내 연약 점성토 지반의 지반공학적 특성)

  • In this paper, 4 representative soft clayey soils in south Korea are selected to estimate the geotechnical characteristics and provide the instructions avaliable for construction works; Inchon Coast, Kum River Estuary, Kwangyang Bay, and Nakdong River Estuary. Total 2250 boring data are collected to construct the data base system on selected areas from Korea geotech DB system, scientific journals, theses, and site investigation reports. Considering the geological, topographical and regional features, geotechnical properties, deformation and strength characteristics of 4 soft clayey soils are evaluated by analyzing the constructed DB system statistically.

An Analysis of a Crucible Survival and a Bead Fragments Excavated at Iksan Wanggung-ri Site in Korea

  • The extensive archaeological remains at the Baekje Kingdom site of Wanggung-ri, Iksan, in the South Jeolla Province, Korea, include a seventh century workshop area that was later covered by the construction of a Buddhist temple. Remains of glass, gold, and bronze artefacts, and the ceramic crucibles used in the working of these materials, provide evidence for a multi-craft, high-temperature technology. We will report the results of both chemical compositional and lead isotope analyses for Wanggung-ri glass, which is among the earliest lead-silica glass type in East Asia, as well as review the evidence for primary glass production at Wanggung-ri.

Costs analysis of carcass burial site construction: Focused on the foot and mouth disease 2011, South Korea

  • Many burial sites were constructed in a short time to prevent the rapid spread of foot and mouth disease in infected livestock carcasses in Korea. More than 4,700 carcass burial sites were constructed in 2011. Approximately seven million poultry and 3.5 million livestock, including cattle and swine, were buried on farmland. Some burial sites were suspected of leachate leakage and were excavated and carcasses redisposed in a bioaugmentation process. This study performed interviews in order to understand the economic issues related to carcass burial and redisposal. The internal data from local government and the assumption data from online sites were analyzed to evaluate the costs; the focus was on burial site construction. The results showed that the local government paid $4.7 and $10.9 per carcass for traditional burial and redisposal. The comparable costs shown online were $4.5. This study found that the standard operating procedures should be carried out to reduce environmental impact and avoid additional costs. We estimated that the cost could be reduced by the advance preparations of materials against the emergency situations such as catastrophe of epidemics. In addition, the innovative technology for the stabilization of carcasses should be established through a future study.

Numerical analysis of suction pile behavior with different loading locations and displacement inclinations

  • Recently, interest of offshore structure construction in South Korea is growing as the land space becomes limited for further development and the renewable energy grows to be more attractive for the replacement of the fossil energy. In order for the optimal construction of optimum offshore floating structures, development of safe and economical offshore foundation technologies is a priority. In this study, the large-deformation behavior of a suction pile, which markets are rapidly growing nowadays, is analyzed for three different loading locations (top, middle, and bottom of the suction pile) with three different displacement inclinations (displacement controlled with displacement inclinations of 0, 10, and 20 degrees from the horizontal). The behavior analysis includes quantifications of maximum resistances, translations, and rotation angles of the suction pile. The suction pile with its diameter of 10 m and height of 25 m is assumed to be embedded in clay, sand, and multi layers of subsea foundation. The soil properties of the clay, sand, and multi layers were determined based on the results of the site investigations performed in the West sea of South Korea. As analyses results, the maximum resistance was observed at the middle of the suction pile with the displacement inclination of 20 degrees, while the translations and rotations resulting from the horizontal and inclined pullouts were not significant until the horizontal components of movements at the loading points reach 1.0 m.

Safety Perception Level of Workers in Construction Site According to NOSACQ-50 (NOSACQ-50을 활용한 건설현장 작업자들의 안전 인식 수준에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze safety perception level of workers in construction site according to NOSACQ-50. To achieve the objective of this study, First, literature review is conducted to clearly define the concept of safety climate. Second, NOSACQ-50 is used to survey the level of safety climate of workers. Third, statistical analysis based on collected data is conducted to examine the level of safety climate. As a result, the level of safety climate in South Korea was found to be serious comparing with the standard value proposed in NOSACQ-50. Finally, the improvements were suggested after investigating the key factors on the level of safety climate. In the future, this study will be used as a baseline for developing safety awareness assessment tools such as NOSACQ-50 for domestic construction sites.

Estimation of energy self-sufficiency in municipal wastewater treatment plant using simulated solar photovoltaic performance (태양광발전시스템 성능 시뮬레이션을 통한 하수처리장 에너지자립율 산정)

  • This paper presents energy self-sufficiency simulated in municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) by adopting solar energy production systems that vary with installation conditions. Relative to the national average energy consumption in WWTPs, the employment of 100 kW photovoltaics (PVs) was simulated to achieve 2.75% of energy self-sufficiency. The simulated results suggested that the installation of PVs toward South or South west would produce the highest energy self-sufficiency in WWTPs. When super-hydrophilic coating was employed in the conventional PVs, 5% of additional solar energy production was achievable as compared to uncoated conventional PVs. When 100 kW of PVs were installed in a future test-bed site, Kihyeung Respida located in Yougin, Sourth Korea, the energy self-sufficiency by solar energy was simulated to be 1.77% (2010). The simulated energy self-sufficiency by azimuth(direction) will be useful reference for practitioners in designing the solar PV systems in the WWTPs.

An Architectural Study on the Building Remains at the Site of Beopsusa Temple in Seongju - With a focus on the remains of Buildings No.2 and 3 - (성주 법수사지 건물지에 대한 건축적 고찰 - 2호, 3호 건물지를 중심으로 -)

  • The two recent excavations at the site of Beopsusa Temple in Seongju revealed that it contained eight building remains, three pedestrian facilities, four drainage facilities, two walls, three embankments, and an estimated pagoda remain. Even though this investigation was restricted to some sections of the site, it confirmed remains of architectural significance and thus attracted the attention of concerned researchers. This study thus set out to make an architectural survey of the site based on the excavation results and examine the characteristics and nature of remains of Buildings No.2 and 3 at the site. The planar analysis results show that Building No.2 (Remains 2-2) at the site of Beopsusa Temple was a gable-roofed building with a single story including 6 kan(間) in the front and 4 kan(間) in the flank and that Building No.3 (Remains 3-3) was a single-story building with a hipped-and-gable roof including 5 kan(間) in the front and 3 kan(間) in the flank. The most noteworthy remain of this excavation was the north-south square platform discovered at the Building No.2 at the site. It is estimated as a high chair platform used for Buddhist sermons. It was confirmed only at the lecture hall remains of Hwangnyongsa Temple and Anyangsa Temple in the nation and had never been found at remains related to Chinese and Japanese Buddhist Temples, being regarded as a very important and unique artifact. Since it was found at the remains of Building No.2, they was estimated as the lecture hall remain at the site. Found at the remains of Building No.3 at the site, the oblong altar remains were also very unique and rare and never found at other Buddhist temple sites. The inside of oblong altar was evenly covered with roof tiles instead of rubble, and there were small crushed stones for internal division, which is an altar construction method distinctly different from its counterparts at other Buddhist temple sites. Those findings raise the possibility high that a wooden facility was put up at the top of oblong remains.

A Study on Estimating Earthquake Magnitudes Based on the Observed S-Wave Seismograms at the Near-Source Region (근거리 지진관측자료의 S파를 이용한 지진규모 평가 연구)

  • There are growing concerns that the recently implemented Earthquake Early Warning service is overestimating the rapidly provided earthquake magnitudes (M). As a result, the predicted damages unnecessarily activate earthquake protection systems for critical facilities and lifeline infrastructures that are far away. This study is conducted to improve the estimation accuracy of M by incorporating the observed S-wave seismograms in the near source region after removing the site effects of the seismograms in real time by filtering in the time domain. The ensemble of horizontal S-wave spectra from at least five seismograms without site effects is calculated and normalized to a hypocentric target distance (21.54 km) by using the distance attenuation model of Q(f)=348f0.52 and a cross-over distance of 50 km. The natural logarithmic mean of the S-wave ensemble spectra is then fitted to Brune's source spectrum to obtain the best estimates for M and stress drop (SD) with the fitting weight of 1/standard deviation. The proposed methodology was tested on the 18 recent inland earthquakes in South Korea, and the condition of at least five records for the near-source region is sufficiently fulfilled at an epicentral distance of 30 km. The natural logarithmic standard deviation of the observed S-wave spectra of the ensemble was calculated to be 0.53 using records near the source for 1~10 Hz, compared to 0.42 using whole records. The result shows that the root-mean-square error of M and ln(SD) is approximately 0.17 and 0.6, respectively. This accuracy can provide a confidence interval of 0.4~2.3 of Peak Ground Acceleration values in the distant range.

Quantification Model Development of Human Accidents based on the Insurance Claim Payout on Construction Site (건설공사보험 사례를 활용한 건설현장 인명사고 정량화 모델 개발)

  • Accident rate in the construction industry of South Korea is increasing every year, and it represents the highest percentage among industries. This shows that activities performed to prevent safety accidents in the country are not efficient when it comes to reduce the accident rate. In order to resolve this issue, a model for the prediction of human accidents should be established. In addition, it is required a quantification study based on pattern of human accidents. Therefore, the objective of this study is to quantify uncertainty of human accidents risk and predict how to change in various circumstances by using Monte Carlo Simulation. To achieve the objective, first, pattern of human accidents was defined. Second, insurance claim payout and information of human accidents during 14 years in construction site were collected. Third, descriptive analysis is conducted to determine the characteristics of the accident pattern. Fourth, to quantitatively analyze the pattern of the human accidents, the population of each accident occurrence and payout were estimated. Finally, estimated populations was analyzed according to characteristics of distribution by using Monte carlo simulation. In the future, this study can be used as a reference for developing the safety management checklist in construction site and development of prediction models of human accident.
