  • Recently, there has been an increasing interest in the use of graphene as electrode materials for supercapacitors. In this regard, graphene oxide (GO) films were prepared using GO slurry obtained by dispersing GO powder in deionized (DI) water. The degree of dispersion of GO powder in DI water depends on the concentration of GO slurry, pH, impurity content, GO particle size, types of functional groups contained in GO, and manufacturing method of GO powder. In this study, the dispersivity of the GO powder was improved by adjusting the pH using only DI water (without additives), and a uniform GO film was obtained. The GO film was reduced by exposure to xenon intense pulsed light for a few milliseconds, and the reduced GO film was used as electrodes of a supercapacitor. The supercapacitor was characterized using cyclic voltammetry (CV), charge-discharge cycle, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements, and the specific capacitance of the supercapacitor was found to be ~140 F/g from the CV data.

  • Ni-W(1-5 at.%) alloy rods were made by powder metallurgy process including powder mixing, compacting and subsequent sintering. Ni and W powder of appropriate compositions were mixed by a ball milling and isostatically pressed in a rubber mold into a rod. The compacted rods were sintered at $1000^{\circ}C-1150^{\circ}C$ at a reduced atmosphere for densification. The lattice parameters of Ni-W alloys were estimated by a high resolution neutron powder diffractometer. All sintered rods were found to have a face centered cubic structure without any impurity phase, but the diffraction peak locations were linearly shifted with increasing W content. The lattice parameter of a pure Ni rod was $3.5238{\AA}$ which is consistent with the value reported in JCPDS data. The lattice parameter of N-W alloy rods increased by $0.004{\AA}$ for 1 atomic % of W, which indicates the formation of a Ni-W solid solution due to the substitution of nickel atoms by tungsten atoms of larger size.

  • In order to recover tin from the waste tin plating solution, we used the ion exchange method using three types of ion exchange resins. The ion exchange resin with tertiary functional group(Lewatit TP 272) has not adsorption ratio of tin. The ion exchange resin with iminodiacetic functional group(Lewatit TP 207) has high adsorption ratio of tin, but impurity content in the recovered tin solution was relatively high. Whereas, in case of the ion exchange resin with functional group of ethylhexyl-phosphate(Lewatit VP OC 1026), adsorption ratio of tin was less than that of Lewatit TP 207. However, it was possible to remove impurities in the recovered tin solution by controlling the pH of the solution. High purity tin solution can be recovered by removing the organic materials with water washing process.

  • The possibility of producing Cr$_2$O$_3$powder from waste magnesia-chromium refractory was investigated by sulfuric acid reaction, alkali fusion, water leaching & purification and heat treatment. The effects of temperature, the amount of NaOH added and the flow rate of air on chromium extraction efficiency in an alkali fusion step were investigated. The fusion product was leached with methanol to solve free-NaOH, and then leached with water to produce a Na$_2$CrO$_4$solution. The purity of chrome(Ⅵ) oxides, prepared both from monochromate with an impurity content and monochromate purified with $CO_2$were also examined. The purified monochromate solution was reduced from Cr(Ⅵ) to Cr(III) with NaHSO$_3$solution. The reduced solution was neutralized with NaOH to produce Cr(OH)$_3$. Water washing was treated to eliminate Na$_2$SO$_4$from neutralized Cr(OH)$_3$slurry. The washed Cr(OH)$_3$was dried and thermally treated to produce Cr$_2$O$_3$powder. The properties like lightness and hue of Cr$_2$O$_3$fabricated in this study were L=47.47, a=-14.40 and b=17.21.

  • The high purity manganese oxides were made from the dust, generated in AOD process that produces a medium-low carbon ferromanganese and collected in the bag filter. Manganese oxide content in the dust was about 90%, and its phase was confirmed as Mn₃O₄. In the extraction of manganese, because of remaining amorphous MnO₂, the dust was reduced to MnO by roasting with charcoal. The pulp density of the reduced dust can control pH of the solution more than 4 and then Fe ion is precipitated to a ferric hydroxide. Because a ferric hydroxide co precipitates with Si ion etc, Fe, Si ion was removed f개m the solution. Heating made water to be volatized and nitrates was left in reactor Then nitrates were a liquid state and stirring was possible. Among the nitrates in reactor, only the manganese nitrate which have the lowest pyrolysis temperature pyrolyzed into β-MnO₂powder and NO₂(g) at the temperature less than 200℃. When the pyrolysis of manganese nitrate has been completed about 90%, injection of water stopped the pyrolysis. Nitrates of impurity dissolved and the spherical high purity β-MnO₂powders were obtained by filtering and washing. Mn₂O₃or Mn₃O₄ powder could be manufactured from β-MnO₂powder by controlling the heating temperature. Lastly, a manufactured manganese oxide particle has 99.97% purity.

  • $Li_{0.44}MnO_2$cathode material has high reversibility during lithium insertion processes and is not easily damaged through over-charging or over-discharging. $Mn_2O_3$is often present as an impurity phase, and reduce the electrochemical capacity of electrode because this phase is electrochemically inert. Adding of excess NaOH reduced the $Mn_2O_3$to the content under undetectable by X-ray diffraction. Because the capacity can be increased in the cathode materials with larger unit cell, some of the manganese was replaced with titanium having larger ion size, and powders with the formula $Li_{0.44}T_{iy}Mn_{1-y}O_2$(where y = 0.11, 0.22, 0.33, 0.44, and 0.55) was synthesized and characterized. A maximum reversible capacity of 150 mAh/g was obtained for $Li/P(EO)_8$LiTFSI/$Li_{0.44}Ti_{0.22}Mn_{0.78}O_2$cells in electrochemical potential spectroscopy (ECPS) experiments. Cells with the titanium-doped manganese oxides exhibited a fade rate of 0.12 % or less per cycle.

  • For tile rapid production of fluorine-18 for medical use, the up-to-date methods of separation such as the recoil separation, the alumina column chromatography, and the distillation are reviewed. The amount of the residue, the gamma emitting impurity, and the tritium content in the product obtained by each separation method are determined. The product obtained by the nuclear recoil separation or by the alumina column chromatography is inferior to that obtained by the distillation in the purity point of view. Thus, the separation by the distillation is tile most effective especially in the case of using a natural lithium carbonate target. Carrier free fluorine-18 of about 2 mCi can routinely be produced by irradiating 7g of the natural lithium carbonate under the neutron flux of about 1$\times$10$^{13}$ n/$\textrm{cm}^2$/sec for 3 hrs, and subsequent separation by the distillation. The over-all processing time is 35-40n1in.

  • $H_2S$ is a detrimental impurity that must be removed for upgrading biogas to biomethane. This study investigates an economic method to mitigate $H_2S$ content, combining scrubbing and aeration. The desulfurization experiments were performed in a laboratory apparatus using EDTA-Fe or landfill leachate as the catalyst and metered mixture of 50-52% (v/v) $CH_4$, 32-33% (v/v) $CO_2$ and 500-1,000 ppmv $H_2S$ balanced by $N_2$ using the C city landfill gas. Dissolved iron concentration in the liquid medium significantly affected the oxidation efficiency of sulfide. Iron components in landfill leachate, which would be available in a biogas/landfill gas utilization facility, was compatible with an external iron chelate. More than 70% of $H_2S$ was removed in a contact time of 9 seconds at iron levels at or over 28 mM. The scrubbing-aeration process would be a feasible and easy-to-operate technology for biogas purification.

  • Olivine is a complete solid solution of fayalite and forsterite that is abundant in Earth and extraterrestrial materials such as rocky planets, meteorites, asteroids, and interplanetary dust. Due to the wide range of olivine compositions, diverse olivine standards are required for quantitative mineralogical analysis of olivine-bearing materials. Olivine standards were synthesized using an electric furnace and stainless steel tubes at temperatures ranging from 1000~1100 ℃. Overall, olivine was synthesized covering the full range of composition, with some synthetic impurities and unreacted material. The synthesized olivine showed a linear increase in the unit cell dimension in proportion to the molar ratio of fayalite in the starting materials, and the diffraction intensity was consistent with that of natural olivine. However, iron-rich synthetic olivine samples tend to have a higher content of impurity, suggesting that not all synthetic olivine can be used as a standard material yet, and improvements in the synthesis process, such as using high purity starting materials and control of reaction time and temperature, are required.
