In this paper, we propose the efficient impulsive noise mitigation scheme for power line communication (PLC) systems in smart grid applications. The proposed scheme estimates the channel impulsive noise information of receiver by applying machine learning. Then, the estimated impulsive noise is updated in data base. In the modulator, the impulsive noise which reduces the PLC performance is effectively mitigated through proposed technique. As an impulsive noise model, Middleton Class A interference model was employed. The performance is evaluated in terms of bit error rate (BER). From the simulation results, it is confirmed that the proposed scheme has better BER performance compared to the conventional model. As a result, the proposed noise mitigation improves the signal quality of PLC systems by effectively removing the channel noise. The results of the paper can be applied to PLC systems for smart grid.

Impulsive sound and vibration signals in gear are often associated with their faults. Thus these impulsive sound and vibration signals can be used as indicators in the diagnosis of gear fault. The early detection of impulsive signal due to gear fault prevents from complete failure in gear. However it is often difficult to make objective measurement of impulsive signals because of background noise signals. In order to ease the detection of impulsive signals embedded in background noise, we enhance the impulsive signals using adaptive signal processing.
One of the major problems for accurate channel estimation in power line communication systems is impulsive noise. Traditional channel estimation algorithms are based on the assumption of Gaussian noise, or the need to locate the positions of impulsive noise. The algorithms may lose optimality when impulsive noise exists in the channel, or if the location estimation of impulsive noise is inaccurate. In the present paper, an effective channel estimation algorithm based on a robust cost function is proposed to mitigate impulsive noise. The proposed method can provide a closed-form solution, and the application of robust estimation theory enables the proposed method to be free from localization of impulsive noise and thus can guarantee that the proposed method has better performance. Simulations verified the proposed algorithm.

Impulsive shooting noise is basically complex phenomenon which contains the linear and non-linear characteristics. For those reasons, numerical analysis of impulsive shooting noise has the difficulties in control of the numerical stability and accuracy on the simulation. In this research, Wave-number Extended Finite Volume Scheme (WEFVS) is applied to the numerical analysis of impulsive shooting noise. In the muzzle blast flow simulation, the generation of the precursor wave and the induced vortex ring are observed. Consequently, blast wave. vortex ring interaction and vortex ring. bow shock wave interaction are evaluated on the shooting process using the accurate and stable scheme. The sound generation in the interactions can be explained by the vorticity transport theorem. The shear layer is evolved behind the projectiles due to the jet flow. In these computations, the impulsive shooting noise is generated by the complex interaction with shooting process and is propagated to the far-field boundary. The impulsive shooting noise generation can be observed by the applications of WEFVS and analyzed by the physical phenomena.

Underwater impulsive sound such as underwater blasting noise, piling noise and stone breaking hammer affects marine animal hearing response and organs. This study describes the characteristics of various impulsive noise from waterfront construction site and their effect on fish. Time constant, peak pressure, energy and SEL(sound exposure level) of four different underwater impulsive sounds are quantified. Auditory and non-auditory tissue damage ranges are derived by comparing their quantities to the exposure criteria for fish. Damage ranges of auditory tissue and non-auditory tissue of underwater boring blast of 150 kg of charge, are about 100 m and 300 m, respectively. Other three impulsive sounds also gives damage effects but less than that of underwater boring blast.

As a compression wave is emitted from a duct, an impulsive wave generates and causes an impulsive noise that is at present a serious environmental noise pollution. In order to clarify the acoustic characteristics of the noise and to reduce their pressure levels, a series of model experiments were conducted on the impulsive waves emitted from an open end of a shock tube. The impulsive waves with various intensities were obtained by controlling the operation pressure ratio of the shock tube. Various kinds of silencers such as the exit boxes with baffle plates, were applied to the duct exit to reduce the impulsive noises. The effects of geometry of silencers and shock Mach number on the noise reduction were clarified. From the measurements of sound pressure level, it was found that installing the baffle plate into the exit box is effective in lowering the noise level at far fields, and that the recommendable geometries of silencer are L/D=1, H/D=1 and H/D=0.75.

When a high-speed railway train enters a tunnel, a compression wave is generated ahead of the train and propagates along the tunnel, compressing and accelerating the rest air in front of the wave. At the exit of the tunnel, an impulsive wave is emitted outward toward the surrounding, which causes a positive impulsive noise like a kind of sonic boom produced by a supersonic aircraft. With the advent of high-speed train, such an impulsive noise can be large enough to cause the noise problem, unless some attempts are made to alleviate its pressure levels. For the purpose of the impulsive noise reduction, the present study investigated the effect of a vertical bleed duct on the compression wave propagating into a model tunnel. Numerical results were obtained using a Piecewise Linear Method and testified by experiment of shock tube with an open end. The results showed that the vertical bleed duct reduces the maximum pressure gradient of compression wave front by about 30 percent, compared with the straight tunnel without the bleed duct. As the width of the vertical bleed duct becomes larger, reduction of the impulsive noise is expected to be greater. However the impulsive noise is independent of the height of the vertical bleed duct.

In this paper, a supervised adaptive equalization algorithm based on probability density function (PDF) matching method is introduced and its decision-feedback version is proposed for underwater communication channels with strong impulsive noise and severe multipath characteristics. The conventional least mean square (LMS) algorithm based on mean squared error (MSE) criterion has shown to be incapable of coping with impulsive noise and multipath effects commonly shown in underwater communications. The linear PDF matching algorithm, which shows immunity to impulsive noise, however, has revealed to yield unsatisfying performance under severe multipath environments with impulsive noise. On the other hand, the proposed nonlinear PDF matching algorithm with decision feedback proves in the simulation to possess superior robustness against impulsive noise and multipath characteristics of underwater communication channels.
Most of noises from cars or home appliances accompany successive impulsive noise due to repeated operation. A human auditory system is able to perceive the successive impulsive noise as either a set of independent noise or amplitude modulated noise according to its occurrence period. This study is to identify main influence factors on understanding of impulsive characteristics and find most appropriate sound quality metrics to express the successive impulsive noise. To do this, the successive impulsive noises were designed and utilized to perform a listening test for identifying conditions where successive impulsive noise can be recognized to have impulsive characteristics. These results were analyzed with sound quality metrics such as loudness, fluctuation strength, and roughness in order to compare the subjective results with the objective results. Consequently, the results revealed that the successive impulsive noise exhibits impulsive characteristics when its occurrence frequency is less than 50 Hz. It was also observed that roughness and fluctuation strength results are not applicable to express the successive impulsive noise because they heavily depend on the amplitude modulation characteristics. On the other hand, loudness results are considered to be useful as an evaluation factor of the successive impulsive noise through the use of loudness limen because it does not depend on the amplitude modulation characteristics.
This paper proposes robust source localization methods for estimating the azimuth angle, elevation angle, velocity, and range using a low-complexity planar antenna array in impulsive non-Gaussian noise environments. The proposed robust source localization methods for wireless communication applications are based on nonlinear M-estimation provided from Huber and Hampel. Simulation results show the robustness performance of the proposed robust methods in impulsive non-Gaussian noise.
