  • This paper deals with the design and aerodynamic analysis of a so-called 'ring-type' impulse turbine for wave energy conversion. Numerical analysis was performed using the CFD cock, FLUENT. The main idea of the proposed turbine rotor was to minimize the adverse effect of tip clearance of the turbine blade; the design was borrowed from a ducted propeller with connected ring tip for special purpose marine vehicles. Results show that the efficiency increases up to $10\%$, depending on flaw coefficient, with the higher flaw coefficient yielding better efficiency. Decrease of input coefficient CA was the main reason for higher efficiency. Performance of ring-type rotor at various design parameters, as well as flaw conditions, was investigated, and the advantages and the disadvantages of the present impulse turbine were also discussed.

  • The objective of this study is to clarify the detailed performances of the impulse type radial turbine and to present an optimum configuration of the turbine. The impulse type radial turbine has been manufactured and investigated experimentally under steady and sinusoidally oscillating flow conditions by model testing. Then, the starting characteristics under sinusoidally flow conditions have been evaluated by a numerical simulation using a quasi-steady analysis. As a result, the running and starting characteristics of the impulse type radial turbine for wave energy conversion have been clarified. Furthermore, the recommended configuration is presented, especially for setting angles of inner and outer guide vanes.

  • For the improvement of aerodynamic performance of the turbine blade in a turbopump for the liquid rocket engine, the optimization of turbine profile shape has been studied. The turbine in a turbopump in this study is a partial admission of impulse type, which has twelve nozzles and supersonic inflow. Due to the separated nozzles and supersonic expansion, the flow field becomes complicates and shows oblique shocks and flow separation. To increase the blade power, redesign of the blade shape using CFD and optimization method was attempted. The turbine cascade shape was represented by four design parameters. For optimization, genetic algorithm based upon non-gradient search has been selected as a optimizer. As a result, the final blade has about 4 percent more blade power than the initial shape.

  • Last blades of LP turbine in nuclear power plant are the highly damaged part and suffered from nozzle steam impulses during the turbine operation. Nozzle impulse is known as a common cause of damage or failure in the turbine blade and results from steam flow distortions due to uneven steam flow patterns between the stationary blade vanes. If impulse force was continuously acting on the blade for a long time, crack or wear will occur in weak parts such as root. So, it is important to know variation of nozzle impulse during the blade moving. But there is no way to measure and estimate the magnitude and direction of nozzle impulse. Therefore, this study was performed to know the variation of nozzle impulse force according to the positions of the blade and to obtain blade equivalent force and torque. This results can be used for blade stress estimation.

  • A methodology of design performance estimation for the supersonic impulse turbine was investigated. Relations of similarity condition and test nozzle area ratio were derived. Comparison of efficiencies between the turbines with real nozzle and test nozzle are made numerically and experimentally. The CFD results and test result confirmed that the turbine with test nozzle was able to predict real turbine performance. In addition, design performance of the supersonic impulse turbine also could be estimated using real nozzle in air-medium test. In this case, design efficiency was found at the pressure-ratio and velocity-ratio of similarity condition of test nozzle.

  • A liquid rocket engine performance has been analyzed as a function of combustion pressure with LOx/RP-1R. The present method is verified by comparing the specific impulse for various combustion pressure with given pump head model. The optimal combustion pressure is between 150 bar and 200 bar for given efficiencies. Both the optimal combustion pressure and the specific impulse increase for increased turbine efficiency. The optimal combustion pressure decreases and the specific impulse increases for increased combustion efficiency. The pump efficiency and the turbine inlet temperature have the same qualitative effect as the turbine efficiency.

  • A study on experimental method of the model test for the impulse turbine is carried out. the wave simulator is used to reproduce the real wave condition. It controls two parameter correspond to wave height and wave frequency. The optimum design which is reported by T. Setoguchi is manufactured and tested for the validation of our test facilities. The comparison of model test show that our facilities produce little bit higher efficiency at maximum efficiency point. To increase the efficiency of turbine, the new rotor with negative tip clearance is designed and being tested.

  • Cavitation phenomenon has long been a difficult problem that regarded as negative event to fluid machines or industrial facilities. In the latest, however, some engineers became to understand the power of cavitation and use it to cleaning wall after developing cavitation nozzle. In this paper, we introduce new concept for power-generation system using cavitation jet flow maid by nozzle and impulse turbine in vacuum condition. The vacuum needed to make cavitation is generated naturally by Torricelli's vacuum, 10.23m effective head drop without additional power. We analyzed water's boiling and the steam's mean free path according to vacuum purity levels for nozzles and turbine blades. The nozzles make water accelerate in the neck and boil in expansion section of the nozzles. The shape of the impulse turbine is designed for absorption of the molecule's kinetic energy of the steam.
