Research on valuation of ecosystem services for water quality improvement using unmanned aerial vehicles -Focusing on Purchased land in Gwangdong-ri area, Gwangju city(Gyeonggi)- (무인항공기를 활용한 수질개선 생태계서비스 가치 평가 방안 연구 - 경기도 광주시 광동리 일원 매수토지를 중심으로 -)

  • The riparian area plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance between the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The Korean government has recognized the importance of protecting riparian areas and has taken steps to purchase land and create ecobelt to reduce non-point source pollutants(NSPs) that can negatively impact water quality. However, selecting the catchment area and calculating the pollution load can be challenging due to the small area of the purchased land and the limitations of low-resolution DEMs. To address these challenges, this study proposes the use of unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs) to create a high-resolution DEM and calculate the pollution load through land cover analysis. This approach can provide a more accurate representation of the land use status and help to identify areas that are contributing to NSPs. The quantitative comparison of the difference in water quality improvement ecosystem services according to the scenarios of additional catchment areas shows that even land purchased for the same amount of money may have different ecosystem service values, and this was quantitatively calculated. This can be used to prioritize future land acquisition. Overall, this study's approach could provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of ecobelt in reducing NSPs and inform future efforts to protect riparian areas in Korea and beyond.

Characteristics of Fish Community and the Effects of Water Quality on River Health in Sincheon, Imjin River, Korea (임진강 지류 신천의 어류군집 특성 및 수질이 하천 건강성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigated the characteristics of fish communities and river health in the Sincheon stream of Imgin River between April and October 2019. The survey collected 3,677 objects in 30 species belonging to 12 families from 23 survey stations. The dominant and subdominant species were Zacco platypus (28.4%) and Oryzias sinensis (13.6%), respectively, followed by Z. koreanus (11.8%), Rhynchocypris oxycephalus (11.7%), Carassius auratus (9.6%), and Pseudorasbora parva (7.9%) in that order. Among the fish species collected, 10 (33.3%) were endemic species in Korea. The exotic species were 5 (16.7%), including Micropterus salmoides, Lepomis macrochirus, Cyprinus carpio (Israeli type), Poecilia reticulata, and Xiphophorus maculatus. The land-locked species included Cottus koreanus and Rhinogobius brunneus, while C. koreanus was a climate change-sensitive species. The dominance of the fish community was low, and the diversity was high in the Sincheon mainstream, Sudongcheon and Cheongdamcheon, whereas Dongducheon and Sangpaecheon showed higher dominance and low diversity. The river health was very good and good in the uppermost and Sudongcheon areas, whereas the upper stream was normal, and the middle and lower streams were poor and very poor, respectively. The water quality was also mostly poor or very poor from the midstream to the downstream, and only Sudongcheon was very good. Therefore, the water quality had a great impact on fish habitat and eventually affected river health significantly. Although the water quality of Shincheon has improved each year, the introduction of several foreign species had a very negative effect. Improvement of river health in Shincheon requires water quality improvement and management of exotic fish species.

A Study of Cognitions and Attitudes of Elementary, Middle and High School Students Concerning School Environmental Sanitation (초, 중등학교 학생들의 학교환경위생에 대한 인식과 태도에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to contribute to the basic data for decisions on environment policy improvement in health promotion, and school sanitation for students in elementary, middle and high schools, by analysing their cognitions and attitudes toward school environmental sanitation. This study was carried out with 1200 male and female students in elementary, middle and high schools in industrial, residential and heavy traffic areas for one month, from July 10 to August 11, 2000. The results of the survey follows. The most serious environmental problems in schools are the toilets, quality of drinking water and the classroom conditions. As for the priority areas for improvement, toilets topped the list followed by the classroom environment, and then by the quality of drinking water. Lack of administrative and financial support, the headmasters' disinterest, lack of interest by the students and parents, lack of awareness among teachers and insufficient effort were cited as the main reasons.

Evaluation of Status of Groundwater Quality Monitoring Network of Korea : Implications for Improvement (우리나라 지하수수질측정망 현황 평가 및 개선을 위한 고찰)

  • As of 2007, there are 2,499 groundwater quality monitoring stations in total in Korea. Among them,478 are operated by the MOCT (Ministry of Construction and Transportation) for the National Groundwater Network Program, 781 wells by the ME (Ministry of Environment) for monitoring of the area where imminent contamination is expected, and 1240 wells by the local governments for monitoring of other areas. Even though, water quality data obtained from those wells are being provided to the public since 1999, the information for the wells has not been appropriately informed. In this study, we assessed the wells that are being used for the national groundwater quality monitoring from the points of operation, location, and well configuration to provide suggestions for the improvement of the national groundwater quality monitoring.

A Study on Quality Improvement for the Prevention of Water Infiltration and Corrosion of Helicopter MRA Control-Rod (회전익 항공기 MRA 조종로드 방수 및 부식 방지에 관한 연구)

  • The Helicopter MRA Control Rod System has the important function of controlling the speed, height, and direction of helicoptersby adjusting the main rotor disc. However, the ingress of water into the inner control rod can cause ice damage in the rod during winter operation and also corrosion;these defects need to be rectified. The water flowed into the control rod through the upper side space, and the rod was cracked during icing expansion occurring at low temperature. The corrosion occurred due to the lack of coating process during the manufacturing process. To resolve these problems, the upper rod was sealed to prevent water inflow and a coating process was added to prevent corrosion. These solutions were verified by awaterproof test and a salt fog test. The phenomena, causes and measures were reviewed and the methods of improvement were established and proven. This proposed technology to prevent water infiltration and corrosion will contribute to the safety of rotary wing aircraft.

Process Conditions for Maximum Yield of Crude Soy Lecithins and Its Quality Improvement by Solvent Extraction (조 레시틴의 제조공정 조건과 용매추출에 의한 품질향상)

  • A study was conducted for process conditions for maximum yield of crude soy lecithins and its quality improvement by solvent extraction. Results indicate that maximum yield of the crude lecithins was obtained by hydration with 3% water at degumming temperature $75^{\circ}C$. On the other hand, water level used for hydration was found to affect the recovery yield of the lecithins more profoundly than the degumming temperature. It was also found that extractions with acetone and 2-propanol increased the phosphatidyl choline content from 19.7% to 28.3% and 58%, respectively.

Coating formation of water supply pipes by inhibitor and water quality improvement effect (부식억제제에 의한 상수도관의 피막 형성 및 수질개선 효과)

  • To investigate the application of corrosion inhibitor on water supply pipes, turbidity, magnitude of corrosion, composition of scale and concentration of metals from an old steel pipe were analysed under inhibitor addition. The concentration of turbidity, iron and copper from the pipes under inhibitor application was 12 ~ 14% of the case which no inhibitor was applied, which suggests the application of inhibitor was very effective for internal corrosion control. In addition, SEM, EDX, XRD and XRF test results showed that application of inhibitor was effective for the decrease of iron concentration and increase of oxygen, phosphorus and calcium concentration, which suggested the existence of protective layer. Therefore, the occurrence of red water will be significantly decreased when inhibitor was applied to the old steel pipes.

  • Recently, advanced systems for water treatment are introduced for water quality improvement. One of those systems is water treatment method using ozone($O_3$). For it has strong oxidizing energy, it is necessary to have materisl stability against $O_3$. In this paper, epoxy resin specimens using as anticorrosive material of concrete structure for drink water are used to serve as a material of deterioration evaluation. It is to be studied weight loss, surface corrosion of specimens, ingredient analysis of floating particle, a solute of chemical ingredient by way of accelerated ozone testing. As the results of experiment, specimen weight is decreased. The surface of specimen is eroded heavily and showed a loss of gloss and floating particle, and in the stability for drinking water, harmful ingredient is not detected in the water.

Characteristics of Organics and Ammonia Nitrogen Discharged by Pollution Source from Human Living (생활계 오염원의 유기물 및 암모니아성 질소 배출특성 평가)

  • The purpose of this research was to suggest the water quality improvement in streams by evaluating the distribution characteristics of organics and ammonia nitrogen discharged by pollution sources from human living. The public sewage treatment plants'(PSTPs) effluents and the waters from streams in Gyeonggi-do were sampled and analyzed. Nitrogenous oxygen demand (NOD) was measured for the stream waters as well as the PSTPs effluents, and the correlations of NOD and $NH_3$-N, $NH_3$-N and water temperature in the PSTPs effluents were confirmed. In the case of the stream waters, the ratios of NOD to BOD and $NH_3$-N increased in the downstream sites after discharging the PSTPs effluents. As a result of statistical analysis of $NH_3$-N concentrations for the national water quality monitoring streams in Gyeonggi-do, $NH_3$-N showed the non-normal distribution which were biased to the left, but showed the considerable level because of higher coefficient of variation. Therefore, it is required to establish the water quality standard for the $NH_3$-N as a new parameter for judging the quality of the streams. In addition, inducing complete nitrification and introducing a logical standard setting system are needed to improve the water quality of streams by identifying distribution of the nitrogen components from PSTPs effluents.

Improvement of Cooling Water Quality by Corrosion and Scale Inhibitor (부식 및 스케일 억제제에 의한 냉각수 수질향상)

  • This study was investigated to control the corrosion and scale at the cooling water system in steel works. Laboratory and field tests were performed for the indirect cooling water system of plate mill. Throughout the experiment, various factors such as leakage of pipes, heating rate and capacity, and the reaction between existing and substitute inhibitors were carefully monitored. The results showed that the harmful effect of high temperature could be minimized, and satisfactory corrosion/scale controls were effectively achieved using inhibitor, even at the increased temperature of $80^{\circ}C$. The batch and field tests in the gas scrubbing cooling water system of blast furnace and cooling water system of corex plant indicated that the new inhibitor was more effective for the prevention of corrosion and scale than the existing one.
