BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to improve portion size estimation aids (PSEAs) used in the nutrition survey of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) and validate the accuracy and precision of the newly developed aids. SUBJECTS/METHODS: We conducted intensive interviews with survey experts in KNHANES and consulted with experts to collect opinions about improvement of PSEAs. Based on the results of the interviews, 5 types of PSEAs (rice bowl, earthen pots, mounds, measuring spoons, and thickness sticks) were newly developed using 3-dimensional (3D) modeling or modification of color or shape. Validation tests were conducted with 96 adults 20 years old or older. For the rice bowl and earthen pots, the participants were asked to select the more similar PSEA in size after being shown the real dishes. For the mounds, measuring spoons, and thickness sticks, the participants were presented with actual plates of food and asked to estimate the given portion sizes using the given PSEAs. RESULTS: The improved 2-dimensional (2D) picture aid for the rice bowl reflecting the size distortion by angle of view using 3D modeling was perceived more closely to the actual size than the current 2D picture (P < 0.001). The change of the color of 2D pictures and 3D models, the change of shape of the measuring spoons, and the 3-dimensionalization of the 2D mounds had no significant improvement in the subjects' perception. CONCLUSIONS: The currently used 2D PSEAs need to be fully redesigned using 3D modeling to improve subjects' perception. However, change of color or shape will not be necessary. For amorphous foods, it is suggested that more evaluation be performed before reaching a final conclusion in the use of PSEAs, or alternative ways to improve accuracy of estimation need to be explored.
This study investigated the development and core mechanism of subitizing in children and adults as well as provides related theoretical and practical discussions. This study was conducted to determine if subitizing changed with the age of participants and if there were differences in subitizing according to the spacing, color, and shape of the stimuli. The subitizing task set (including forty main trials) was prepared. Forty-five children (fifteen each in groups of 3, 4, and 5-year-olds) and fifteen adults were recruited to perform the subitizing tasks. The results demonstrated that the subitizing speed and accuracy of children improved abruptly between age 3 and age 4. Furthermore, there were significant differences in children's subitizing speed according to the spacing and color of the objects. The children's response time decreased when the objects were fully apart or were of diverse colors. In addition, there were partial significant differences in the subitizing speed of children related to the shape of the objects. The subitizing speed of children decreased in a condition (subitizing 5 objects of diverse colors in fixed spacing) when the shapes of the objects were diverse. The subitizing speed of adults only differed according to the space of the objects. The results demonstrate the development of subitizing in early childhood along with the presence of object individuation processing stages underlying subitizing. This study also provides practical information and suggestions for educational curricula that can strengthen the competency of children in systematic and diverse activities.
Using a series of medical tomograms, we can reconstruct internal organs or other objects of interest and generate 3-D images. It is generally accepted that the axial resolution determined by two sequential image slices is lower than the planar resolution in one image slices. Therefore, various methods of interpolation were developed for an accurate display of reconstructed images. In this paper, a new algorithm for 3-D reconstruction of the medical images such as MRI and X-ray CT is suggested. The algorithm is shape-based and utilizes parts of the gray-level information. We extend the conventional shape-based interpolation of the binary images to the gray-scale images using the shortest distance map. Using this new algorithm, We could reduce the execution time for interpolation while keeping similar high quality of the reconstructed images with reduced execution time and is applicable to the various medical tomograms.
An efficient and high-fidelity design approach for wing-body shape optimization is presented. Depending on the size of design space and the number of design of variable, aerodynamic shape optimization process is carried out via different optimization strategies at each design stage. In the first stage, global optimization techniques are applied to planform design with a few geometric design variables. In the second stage, local optimization techniques are used for wing surface design with a lot of design variables to maintain a sufficient design space with a high DOF (Degree of Freedom) geometric change. For global optimization, Kriging method in conjunction with Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used. Asearching algorithm of EI (Expected Improvement) points is introduced to enhance the quality of global optimization for the wing-planform design. For local optimization, a discrete adjoint method is adopted. By the successive combination of global and local optimization techniques, drag minimization is performed for a multi-body aircraft configuration while maintaining the baseline lift and the wing weight at the same time. Through the design process, performances of the test models are remarkably improved in comparison with the single stage design approach. The performance of the proposed design framework including wing planform design variables can be efficiently evaluated by the drag decomposition method, which can examine the improvement of various drag components, such as induced drag, wave drag, viscous drag and profile drag.
Increased demand of power-transformer's capacity inevitably results in an excessive temperature rise of transformer components, which in turn requires improved radiator design. In this paper, numerical simulation of the cooling performance of an ONAN-type (Oil Natural Air Natural) radiator surrounded by air was performed by using CFX. The natural convection of the air was treated with the full-model. The present parametric study considers variation of important variables that are expected to affect the cooling performance. We changed the pattern and cross-sectional area of flow passages, the fin interval, the flow rate of oil and shape of flow passages. Results show that the area of flow passage, the fin interval, the flow rate of oil and shape of flow passages considerably affect the cooling performance whereas the pattern of flow passages is not so much influential. We also found that for the case of the fin interval smaller than the basic design, the temperature drop decreases while a larger interval gives almost unchanged temperature drop, indicating that the basic design is optimal. Further, as the flow rate of oil increases, the temperature drop slowly decreases as expected. On the other hand, when the shape of flow passages are changed, temperature drop is increased, indicating that the cooling performance is enhanced thereupon.
Most of the important stone cultural heritage (National treasures and Treasures) in Korea are mainly located outdoor and considerably affected by the changes of the temperature, humidity and rainfalls. 541 of the stone cultural heritage are preserved as National treasure and Treasure. The pagodas occupy 187 remains and next 127 Buddha statues, 68 monuments, 60 stupas, and the others 74 stone cultural heritages. The shelter has been installed for one pagoda, 60 Buddha statues, 36 monuments and two stupas. The shelters are categorized in three shapes as traditional shape, modern shape, and others (tradition+modern). Approximately 100 of shelters that have constructed in traditional ways, and about nine of shelters have modern ways, and the only one has the combination shape of tradition and modern, which has been constructed since mid 1900s and repaired from the 1980s~2000s. Many researchers are studying for improvement of manners such as repairing, remodeling or removing of the shelter because problems have occured on shelters. Architectural form of traditional style of Korean timber building is respected, but it has problems on importing natural sunlight to the inside as well as ventilation and spacial problems. However, it needs to supplement policies to improve the positive roles of shelters such as prevention of artificial damage, blocking acid rain, and so on. For instance, the rock-carved Buddha Triad in Seosan, it had problems with viewing, contamination, and dew condensation on the surface. These problems decreased after dismantling the shelter, the space was made for improvement of viewing and dew condensation, and moisture problems were in better conditions. The velocity wind is an important factor in drying conditions on the surface of the rock, therefore the condition has improved after dismantling the shelter.
This purpose of this study is to develop content that enables repetitive carving practice of the maxillary right central incisor (MRCI) based on augmented reality (AR). For a step-by-step practice of achieving the tooth shape, after creation of the storyboard from the square box shape in step 1 to the completed MRCI block in step 16, three-dimensional (3D) modeling data reflecting the characteristics of the mesial, distal, lingual, and labial surface of the MRCI were generated. An application was built in which 3D modeling data were output on the screen of the learner's mobile device, and image markers suitable for 3D modeling in steps 1 to 16 of the MRCI model were respectively generated. Using this information, the learner could carve a high-quality MRCI by repeatedly performing the tooth shape carving exercises. With AR, we intend to contribute to improved tooth morphology carving skills by linking the theory and practical techniques for a beginners in dentistry.
This paper presents a robust 3D model hashing dependent on key and parameter by using heat kernel signature (HKS), which is special shape feature descriptor, In the proposed hashing, we calculate HKS coefficients of local and global time scales from eigenvalue and eigenvector of Mesh Laplace operator and cluster pairs of HKS coefficients to 2D square cells and calculate feature coefficients by the distance weights of pairs of HKS coefficients on each cell. Then we generate the binary hash through binarizing the intermediate hash that is the combination of the feature coefficients and the random coefficients. In our experiment, we evaluated the robustness against geometrical and topological attacks and the uniqueness of key and model and also evaluated the model space by estimating the attack intensity that can authenticate 3D model. Experimental results verified that the proposed scheme has more the improved performance than the conventional hashing on the robustness, uniqueness, model space.
Plant breeders have focused on improving plant architecture as an effective means to increase crop yield. Here, we identify the main-effect quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for plant shape-related traits in rice (Oryza sativa) and find candidate genes by applying whole genome re-sequencing of two parental cultivars using next-generation sequencing. To identify QTLs influencing plant shape, we analyzed six traits: plant height, tiller number, panicle diameter, panicle length, flag leaf length, and flag leaf width. We performed QTL analysis with 178 $F_7$ recombinant inbred lines (RILs) from a cross of japonica rice line 'SNU-SG1' and indica rice line 'Milyang23'. Using 131 molecular markers, including 28 insertion/deletion markers, we identified 11 main- and 16 minor-effect QTLs for the six traits with a threshold LOD value > 2.8. Our sequence analysis identified fifty-four candidate genes for the main-effect QTLs. By further comparison of coding sequences and meta-expression profiles between japonica and indica rice varieties, we finally chose 15 strong candidate genes for the 11 main-effect QTLs. Our study shows that the whole-genome sequence data substantially enhanced the efficiency of polymorphic marker development for QTL fine-mapping and the identification of possible candidate genes. This yields useful genetic resources for breeding high-yielding rice cultivars with improved plant architecture.

In this study, we designed the metallic reception part of a patch antenna using the phase field design method. The design object function is formulated with the S-parameter value which represent the return loss so that it is targeted to maximize radiation efficiency at a target frequency. The initial model of a patch antenna was designed via the ordinary theory based approach and its performance was enhanced by changing the structural configuration of the metallic part using the phase field design method combined with the double well potential functions. The final shape was proposed by removing the gray scale area along the structural boundary by employing a cut-off method. The proposed shape shows that the radiation efficiency at target frequency is significantly improved compared with the initial patch shape. The finite element analysis and optimization precess was performed using the commercial package COMSOL and Matlab programming.
