  • Purpose: Hope has been identified as a protective factor that contributes to achieving a better quality to life, especially in patients with chronic disease. The purpose of this review was to synthesize current knowledge about the relationship between hope and quality of life among adolescents living with chronic illnesses. Methods: We searched major English-language databases (PsycINFO, PubMed, and CINAHL) for studies from January 1, 2002 to July 12, 2019. Studies were included if they provided data on hope and its relationship with quality of life among adolescents with chronic diseases. Results: In total, five articles were selected from the 336 studies that were retrieved. All five studies reported a positive correlation between hope and quality of life, such that people with a higher level of hope had a better quality of life. Hope was found to have direct and indirect effects on quality of life in adolescents with chronic diseases. Conclusion: Healthcare professionals should make more efforts to enhance hope in adolescents with chronic diseases in order to improve their quality of life. Future studies exploring how hope develops in adolescents with chronic diseases and the long-term impact of hope on quality of life are necessary.

  • This study was a descriptive research in search of a nursing intervention scheme to improve stroke patients' quality of life by understanding the relationship of stroke patients' ADL, depression, self-efficacy and quality of life with various variables and identifying factors that affect their quality of life. Each subject was interviewed one to one based on a structured questionnaire. With regard to research tools, Modified Barthel Index (MBI: Fortinsky et al., 1981), which was translated by Choi, Hye-sook (1996), was used in measuring ADL, Randloff's (1977) tool, which was translated by Choi, Soon-hee, was used in measuring depression, and the tool developed by Sherer et al. (1982), which is to measures self-efficacy under general conditions not limited to specific conditions, and modified by O, Bok-ja (1994) was used in measuring self-efficacy. The quality of life was measured using the scale of satisfaction of life developed by Diener et al. (1985). The results of this study were as follows: 1. The means of ADL of the subjects was $79.5{\pm}31.9$, depression $26.8{\pm}10.4$, self-efficacy $47.1{\pm}25.7$, and the quality of life $12.3{\pm}4.9$. 2. The subjects' quality of life showed a statistically significant difference according to gender (t=7.9, p= .006), satisfaction with income (F=5.8, p= .004), the burden of medical fee (F=3.7, p= .028) and the period of disease (F=2.8, p= .042). 3. With regard to relationship among ADL, depression, self-efficacy and the quality of life, ADL was in a relatively low positive correlation (r= .293, p= .003) with and the quality of life, depression in a high negative correlation (r=- .634, p= .000) with the quality of life, and self-efficacy in a positive correlation with the quality of life (r= .388, p= .000). 4. Factors that made a significant influence on the quality of life were depression (B=- .309, p= .001) and satisfaction with income (B=-2.611, p= .001). Based on these results, this study made following suggestions: 1. It is necessary to run rehabilitation programs to improve stroke patients' ADL, depression and self-efficacy. 2. It is necessary to perform research of monitoring stroke patients' quality of life in various areas using measuring tools.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the quality of life (QOL) between breast cancer patients with lymphedema and without using the SF-36 (Korean version). Fifty-three consecutive, unselected patients who underwent treatment for breast cancer patients with lymphedema and 37 patients without lymphedema from August 4, 2004 to October 13, 2005 were interviewed and asked to complete the SF-36. These data were used to test the hypothesis that breast cancer patients with lymphedema experience impaired quality of life relative to their control group. The lymphedema group scored poorer than the control group on six of the eight subscales as well as the physical component summary scale of the SF-36 (p<.05). Only bodily pain didn't show statistical difference (p>.05). Breast cancer patients with lymphedema appear to experience problems in multiple quality of life domains compared with without lymphedema group. These findings demonstrate the need for interventions to improve the quality of life in breast cancer patients with lymphedema.

We want to provide empirical data on how the elderly vocational business ultimately affects the lives of the elderly through the intervention of social capital. The intervention effect of social capital is as follows. Satisfaction with the elderly job project has a great impact on the quality of life, trust, network, and social participation. In particular, trust in the quality of life of the elderly had a great influence on the quality of life and was indirectly effective. In addition, the intervention of social participation between social capital was known, and the elderly job project increased social participation to improve the quality of life of the elderly. Therefore, it can be evaluated that the elderly job project has an important positive effect on the quality of life of the elderly, and the social capital formed through the elderly job project plays a role in directly or indirectly improving the quality of life of the elderly.

  • Purpose: The purposes of this study were to find the levels of distress and quality of life of breast cancer survivors in Korea and to identify relationship between distress and quality of life. Methods: The data were collected from 122 breast cancer survivors in 2009. To measure the distress and quality of life, the 'Distress Thermometer and Problem List' and the 'Functional Assessment Cancer Therapy-Breast' were used respectively. Results: The mean score of distress was 4.77 (${\pm}2.35$) and 63.1% of the subjects reported a distress score of 4 or more, indicating a clinically significant level of distress. Among these, the most frequently reported problem area was emotion, followed by family. The mean score of the quality of life was 88.22 (${\pm}18.41$), signifying 6.13 out of 10. The levels of distress and the quality of life were negatively correlated (r=-.38, p<.001). Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that distress is prevalent in Korean breast cancer survivors and the distress is related negatively with their quality of life. Thus oncology professionals continuously need to assess distress of breast cancer survivors and to provide appropriate psychosocial interventions to improve their quality of life.

  • This study was attempted to identify the effects of physical and mental health on quality of life in middle-aged adults by gender. The Data were analyzed for 4,511 adults (2,260 men, 2,251 women) aged 45 to 65 who had no missing values in major variables based on the data of the 2016 Korea Health Panel. According to the data, the quality of life in middle-aged adults was .92 (±.08) for men and .91 (±.10) for women, which was significantly higher than that of women (t=3.54, p<.001). Factors affecting the quality of life in middle-aged men were subjective health status (β=.40, p<.001), stress (β=-.17, p<.001) and education level (β=.10, p<.001), and these variables explained 23% of the quality of life (F=227.28, p<.001). Factors affecting the quality of life in middle-aged women were subjective health status (β=.40, p<.001), stress (β=-.11, p<.001), education level (β=.05, p=.011) and anxiety (β=-.05, p=.022), and these variables explained 21% of the quality of life (F=145.42, p<.001). Based on the results of this study, the group with low level of education in middle-aged adults needs health management, education on how to relieve stress, and intensive management to improve the quality of life. In addition, the differentiated approach should be required to reduce anxiety in middle-aged women.
