  • Synthesis gas was produced by the partial oxidation of methane. For the preparation of catalysts, Ni, known to be active in this reaction and cheap, was used as the active component and $CeO_2$, having high oxygen storage capability and high redox ability, was used as the support. The catalysts were prepared by the impregnation and urea methods. The catalyst prepared by the urea method showed about 11 times higher surface area and finer particle size than that prepared by the impregnation method. The catalysts prepared by the urea method showed higher methane conversion and synthesis gas selectivity than that prepared by the impregnation method. In this reaction, carbon deposition is a problem to be solved, so La was added to the catalyst system to reduce the carbon deposition. TGA analysis results showed that there was 2% carbon deposition with La-added catalysts and 16% with La-free catalysts. It was found that the addition of La decreases the amount of carbon deposition and prevents catalyst deactivation.

  • Catalytic combustion of benzene over $CeO_2$-supported copper oxides has been investigated. The supported copper oxides catalysts were prepared using ball mill method and characterized by XRD, FT-IR, TEM and TPR. In the CuO/$CeO_2$ catalysts prepared using ball mill method, highly dispersed copper oxide species were shown at high loading ratio. The CuO/$CeO_2$ prepared using ball mill method showed the higher activity than those prepared using impregnation method. The catalytic activity increased with an increase in the CuO loading ratio, 10 wt% loaded CuO/$CeO_2$ catalyst giving the highest activity. In addition, the promoting of 10 wt% loaded CuO/$CeO_2$ catalyst with $Fe_2O_3$ and CoO enhanced the dispersion of CuO and then increased the catalytic activity.

  • Platinum nanoparticles loading on carbon nanotube was carried out by impregnation of hexachloro platinate(IV) from hydrogen hexachloro platinate(IV) hydrate dissolved solution without using reduction agents, and heating the hexachloro platinate(IV) impregnated carbon nanotube up to $400^{\circ}C$. The amounts of impregnated hexachloro platinate(IV) on to carbon nanotube were measured with UV-visible spectrophotometer. The TG, XRD, and TEM analysis were performed to confirm the platinum particles loading and distribution on carbon nanotube. The average platinum particles size on carbon nanotube was under 2 nm by heating the hexachloro platinate(IV) up to $400^{\circ}C$ in spite of non-using reduction agents, while the average size increased due to the agglomeration of some particles by heating them up to $800^{\circ}C$. Therefore, uniformly distributed platinum nanoparticles loading on carbon nanotube can be obtained from simple impregnation of hexachloro platinate(IV) from solution and heating it up to $400^{\circ}C$.

  • The effect of La and Si addition of the thermal stabilization of $\gamma-alumina$ powers have been studied. Reagent grade $La(NO_3)_3{\cdot}6H_2O$ and $Si(OC_2H_5)_4$ were used as starting materials. These additives were introduced by wet impregnation method. Both La and Si additives suppressed the sintering of alumina and were found to be good thermal stabilizers of $\gamma-alumina$. Especially, Si drastically suppressed the phase transition of alumina at high temperatures. The major mechanisms for the thermal stabilization of alumina were seemed to be new phase formation and retardation of surface diffusion by addition of La or Si into alumina matrix.

  • The impregnated activated carbons were prepared by the incipient wetness method with the contents of $KIO_3$ varied from 1.0${\sim}$10 wt% as the impregnation material. The specific surface area and micropore volume of the rice hulls activated carbon were $2,600{\sim}2,800$ $m^2$/g and 1.1${\sim}$1.4 cc/g, respectively. With increasing the contents of impregnation materials, the surface area and micropore volume decreased by 3${\sim}$21%. However, The amounts of hydrogen sulfide adsorbed increased by 2.1${\sim}$2.8 times depending on the impregnation content. The optimum contents of $KIO_3$ were 2.4 wt%. Although the breakthrough time and adsorption capacity of hydrogen sulfide decreased with increasing temperature in the case of the unimpregnated activated carbons, they increased by 1.2${\sim}$ 3.2 times for the case of the impregnated activated carbons. The optimum aspect ratio(L/D) was 1.0 and the adsorption amount of hydrogen sulfide enhanced with increasing the gas flow rate. The regeneration temperature was determined as 400$^{\circ}C$ from the TGA experiment. The adsorption capacity of hydrogen sulfide with the impregnated activated carbon decreased gradually as the regeneration continued. The hydrogen sulfide adsorption amount of the regenerated activated carbon up to 4 times was still higher than that of the unimpregnated activated carbon.

  • The deactivated diesel oxidation catalyst(DOC) was remanufactured by ultrasonic wave treatment with various solutions, followed by active component re-impregnation. The catalytic performance and surface properties of remanufactured DOC were studied at various remanufacturing conditions. The proper ultrasonic-wave cleaning time at various solutions and optimal re-impregnation amounts of active component for the best catalytic performance were investigated. The catalytic performance tests on the conversions of CO and THC(total hydrocarbon) were also carried out at various temperatures by catalytic reaction test unit using bypass gas from the diesel engine dynamo system. It was found that the catalytic performance of DOC remanufactured with the high-temperature air washing, ultrasonic wave cleaning at acidic/basic solutions and active component re-impregnation method was recovered to 90% level of its activity compared to that of the fresh DOC, which was caused by removing the deactivating materials from the surface of the DOC through the analyses of catalyst performance test and their characterization by Optical microscope, EDX, ICP, TGA, and porosimeter.

  • The effect of La promoter on the carbon deposition and catalytic activity in the synthesis gas production with supported Ni catalysts was investigated. Active component was Ni and support was $CeO_2$ and the promoter used was La. The reaction was carried out in a fixed bed reactor at 1 atm and $650{\sim}800^{\circ}C$. The catalysts were prepared by two methods, the impregnation method and urea method. The catalysts prepared by the urea method showed 10 times higher surface area than those of prepared by the impregnation method. By the introduction of La promoter in the catalyst system, carbon deposition was remarkably reduced from 16% to 2%. It appears that the promoter facilitates the formation of a stable fluoride-type phase, which reduces the carbon deposition. The best catalytic activity and CO and $H_2$ selectivities were obtained with 2.5wt% $Ni/Ce(La)O_x$ catalyst at $750^{\circ}C$, giving 90% methane conversion, 93 and.80% of CO and $H_2$ selectivities, respectively.

  • Pd/C catalysts were prepared by various preparation methods such as ion exchange, impregnation and polyol method and also characterized by nitrogen adsorption-desorption isothermal, XRD, FE-TEM and CO-chemisorption. The activities of these catalysts were tested in the hydrogenation of cyclohexene to cyclohexane. Catalytic activities of Pd/C catalysts were found to be effected by the chosen preparation methods. Pd dispersions of each Pd/C catalysts prepared by ion exchange, impregnation and polyol method were 17.55, 13.82% and 1.35%, respectively, confirmed by CO-chemisorption analysis. These were also in good agreement with the FE-TEM results. The Pd/C catalyst prepared by ion exchange method exhibits good performance with the cyclohexene conversion rate of 71% for 15 min. These results indicate that Pd/C catalyst having higher dispersion and lower particle size is in favor of hydrogenation cyclohexene and also Pd dispersion increases with the increment of catalytic activity.

  • Recently, there has been a growing interest in clean hydrogen energy that does not emit carbon dioxide during combustion due to the increasing focus on carbon neutral. Research related to hydrogen production continues, and in this study, we applied waste-derived synthesis gas to the water-gas shift reaction to simultaneously treat waste and produce high-purity hydrogen. To enhance catalytic activity in the high-temperature water-gas shift (HT-WGS) reaction, magnesium was used as a support material alongside cerium. Cu-CeO2-MgO catalysts were synthesized, with copper acting as the active component for the HT-WGS reaction. A study on the catalytic activity based on the preparation method was conducted, and the Cu-CeO2-MgO catalyst prepared by impregnation method exhibited the highest activity in the HT-WGS reaction. The observed superior performance of the Cu-CeO2-MgO catalyst prepared through the impregnation method can be attributed to its significantly higher oxygen storage capacity and amount of active Cu species.
