  • To introduce the antibacterial activity, ACF(activated carbon fiber) was impregnated by nano-sized Ag, Mn, and phosphoric acid. It was observed by the SEM analysis that Ag, Mn and phosphoric acid were properly impregnated at the ACF. The impregnated ACF showed lower adsorption performance than the pure ACF. It is found that ACFs impregnated by nano-sized Ag or phosphoric acid have a good antibacterial activity against bacillus cereus and salmonella entaritidis. but in the case of ACF impregnated with Mn, it have not any antibacterial effect on the bacillus cereus and salmonella entaritidis.

  • An Amberlite XAD-4 resin impregnated with di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid was prepared and its adsorption-desorption behaviors with Sr(II) ions under various conditions was examined. The resin was characterized by fourier transform infrared and thermal analysis techniques. The effects contact time, temperature, pH, interfering ions and eluants were studied. Results showed that adsorption of Sr (II) well fitted with pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The equilibrium adsorption data of Sr (II) on the impregnated resin were analyzed by Jossens, Weber-van Vliet, Redlich-Peterson and Fritz-Schlunder models to find out desirable equilibrium condition. Among them, the Fritz-Schlunder model best fitted to the experimental data. The maximum sorption capacity of impregnated resin amounted to 0.45 mg/ g at pH 8.0 and $20^{\circ}C$.

  • The objective of this study is the preparation of activated carbon for BAC(biological activated carbon). Prepared activated carbon was measured iodine adsorption(mg/g). methylene blue adsorption(mg/g), B.E.T($m^2/g$), PSD(Pore Size Distribution) and 'Picabiol' which in commercial activated carbon for BAC. Activation method for this study was a chemical activation used the phosphoric acid. In the method, two important factors affected activation characterized in preparation were temperature and impregnated phosphoric acid concentration. Activation temperature and impregnated phosphoric acid concentration were changed the $600{\sim}800^{\circ}C$ and 35~50wt% respectively. Activation time was fixed for 3 hour. Optimal activation temperature was $800^{\circ}C$ and impregnated phosphoric acid concentrations was about 50wt%. By the above condition specific surface area, iodine adsorption number and methylene blue adsorption number resulted $1643.3m^2/g$, 1093 mg/g, 445.6 mg/g, respectively.

  • To use the filter materials for selective removal of carbonyl compounds in cigarette mainstream smoke, hydrazine such as 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine and dansylhydraznie impregnated adsorbents were prepared with perchloric acid or phosphoric acid as a accelerator in hydrazone formation reaction. The change of morphology of adsorbents in various of impregnator were investigated by SEM. Impregnation amount caused by reaction time, acid type and impregnation reagent, and the adsorption properties of carbonyl compounds in cigarette mainstream smoke were investigated. Amounts of impregnation was increased as increasing reaction time. The removal amount for vapor phase carbonyl compounds by 2,4-DNPH impregnated adsorbent was higher than that of dansylhydrazine impregnated adsorbent. The selectivity of 2,4-DNPH impregnated polyacrylic type adsorbent was superior to those of other adsorbents. This results indicated that the 2,4-DNPH impregnated polyacrylic adsorbent was applicable to cigarette filter material because of its fast reactivity and porosity.

  • Composite materials were prepared by impregnating water glass into the wood, followed by soaking in solutions of boric acid or phosphoric acid. The effects of these treatments on the physical and mechanical properties of the specimens and especially on its heat resistance were investigated. 1) Weight Percent Gain (WPG)s increased with increase of concentrations of water glass. However, there was little relationship between treatment temperatures and WPG. Generally, WPGs of double treated specimens were higher than single treated ones. 2) Percent shrinkages in each directions of the specimens treated with water glass had higher value than other specimens. Percent shrinkages of the specimens treated with boric acid or phosphoric acid were decreased as compared with untreated specimen. However, the specimens treated with water glass or phosphoric acid showed very high hygroscopicity. 3) The bending strengths of all specimens treated inorganic substances were slightly decreased. However, the values of compressive strength and hardness of most specimens treated with inorganic substances increased or similar to that of untreated specimen except for a phosphoric acid treated specimens. 4) The specimens had good heat resistance. Weight losses of all specimens treated inorganic substances were about 50~70%. In particular, the specimens treated at $300^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$ almost kept their shapes.

  • BACKGROUND: The mobile vortex wet scrubber was developed to remove the harmful chemicals from accidental releases. However, there was a disadvantage that it was limitedly used for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as toluene according to the physicochemical properties. This study compared the removal efficiencies of an improved mobile scrubber on toluene and ammonia by applying diverse adsorption and absorption methods. METHODS AND RESULTS: The removal efficiencies on harmful chemicals were examined using various adsorption and absorption methods of water vortex process (C), phosphoric acid-impregnated activated carbon adsorption (PCA), pH-controlled water (pH 2.5) vortex process absorption with sulfuric acid (SWA) after ammonia exposure, granular activated carbon adsorption (GCA), and activated carbon mat adsorption (CMA) after toluene exposure. As a result, the best removal efficiency was shown in the SWA for ammonia and GCA for toluene. Also, the SWA and GCA methods were compared with different concentration levels. In the case of ammonia exposure (5, 10 and 25%), there was no difference by concentration levels, and the concentration in the outlet gradually increased, with pH change from acid to base. In the case of toluene exposure (50, 75 and 100%), the outlet concentration was higher relative to the exposure concentration in the initial 10 min, but the outlet concentration was remained steady after 10 min. CONCLUSION: The newly improved mobile scrubber was also effective in removing VOCs through adsorption techniques (activated carbon, activated carbon fiber, carbon mat filter etc.), as well as removing acid-base harmful chemicals by neutralization reaction.
