The use of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in strengthening reinforced concrete beam-column subassemblies has been scrutinised both experimentally and numerically in recent years. While a multitude of numerical models are available, and many match the experimental results reasonably well, there are not many studies that have looked at the efficiency of different finite elements in a comparative way in order to clearly identify the best practice when it comes to modelling FRP for strengthening. The present study aims at investigating this within the context of FRP retrofitted reinforced concrete beam-column subassemblies. Two programs are used side by side; ANSYS and VecTor2. Results of the finite element modeling using these two programs are compared with a recent experimental study. Different failure and yield criteria along with different element types are implemented and a useful technique, which can reduce the number of elements considerably, is successfully employed for modeling planar structures subjected to in-plane loading in ANSYS. Comparison of the results shows that there is good agreement between ANSYS and VecTor2 results in monotonic loading. However, unlike VecTor2 program, implicit version of ANSYS program is not able to properly model the cyclic behavior of the modeled subassemblies. The paper will be useful to those who wish to study FRP strengthening applications numerically as it provides an insight into the choice of the elements and the methods of modeling to achieve desired accuracy and numerical stability, a matter not so clearly explored in the past in any of the published literature.

Fast-built construction is a key feature for successful applications of precast concrete (PC) moment frame system in recent construction practices. To this end, by introducing some unique splicing details in precast connections, especially between PC columns including panel zones, use of temporary supports and bracings can be minimized based on their self-sustaining nature. In addition, precast wide beams are commonly adopted for better economic feasibility. In this study, three self-sustaining precast concrete (PC) wide beam-column connection specimens were fabricated and tested under reversed cyclic loadings, and their seismic performances were quantitatively evaluated in terms of strength, ductility, failure modes, energy dissipation and stiffness degradation. Test results were compared with ASCE 41-17 nonlinear modeling curves and its corresponding acceptance criteria. On this basis, an improved macro modeling method was explored for a more accurate simulation. It appeared that all the test specimens fully satisfy the acceptance criteria, but the implicit joint model recommended in ASCE 41-17 tends to underestimate the joint shear stiffness of PC wide beam-column connection. While, the explicit joint model along with concentrated plastic hinge modeling technique is able to present better accuracy in simulating the cyclic responses of PC wide beam-column connections.
A tornado changes its wind speed and direction rapidly; therefore, it is difficult to study the effects of a tornado on buildings in a wind tunnel. In this work, the status of the tornado-structure interaction is surveyed by numerical simulation. Various models of the tornado wind field found in literature are surveyed. Three-dimensional computer modeling work using the turbulence model based on large eddy simulation is presented. The effect of tornado on a cubic building is considered for this study. The Navier-Stokes (NS) equations are approximated by finite difference method, and solved by a semi-implicit procedure. The force coefficients are plotted in time to study the effect of the Rankine-Combined Vortex Model. Some flow visualizations are also reported to understand the flow behavior around the cube.
A numerical method for the mathematical water modeling in 2-dimensional flow has been developed. The model based on a split operator technique, in which, the advection term is calculated using the upwind scheme. The diffusion term is one- dimensionalized and calculated using Crank-Nicholson's implicit finite difference scheme to reduce the numerical errors from large time steps and variable spacings. It also provides a relatively simple and economic method for more accurate simulation of pollutant dispersion. Water depths and flow velocities in the Boreyong reservoir during the normal water periods were predicted by numerical experiments with a 2-dimensional flow model so as to provide current field data for the study of advection and diffusion of pollutants. Developed 2-dimensional water quality model is applied to Boreyong reservoir to simulate a spatial and periodical changes of water quality.
A numerical study is carried out to investigate the transient process of combustion phenomena associated with hypersonic propulsion devices. Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations for reactive flows are used as governing equations with a detailed chemistry mechanism of hydrogen-air mixture and two-equation SST turbulence modeling. The governing equations are discretized by a high order accurate upwind scheme and solved in a fully coupled manner with a fully implicit time accurate method. At first, oscillating shock-induced combustion is analyzed and the comparison with experimental result gives the validity of present computational modeling. Secondly, the model ram accelerator experiment was simulated and the results show the detailed transient combustion mechanisms. Thirdly, the evolution of oblique detonation wave is simulated and the result shows transient and final steady state behavior at off-stability condition. Finally, shock wave/boundary layer interaction in combustible mixture is studied and the criterion of boundary layer flame and oblique detonation wave is identified.
The finite element method has been widely used in the analysis of ring rolling. For ring rolling it requires a high computational expense due to the non-steady state material flow characteristics of the process. The high computational expense causes the finite element analysis to be impractical for industrial applications. In the current study, we aim to develop a practical implicit finite element modeling method for ring rolling. This method uses a step-wise steady state assumption and is called the “Stepped method”. The stepped method divides the whole process time of unsteady-state flow model into a finite number of steady-state models. It then solves the process at several specific time steps until convergence is reached. In order to confirm the performance and validity of the newly proposed stepped method, the result from the stepped method were compared to the results from a Lagrangian finite element method and to results from experiments reported in the literature.
This paper aims to investigate modeling scripts based on the mode of group interaction in a computer-supported collaborative learning environment. Based on a literature review, this paper assumes that group interaction and its mode would have strong influence on the online collaborative learning process, and furthermore lead learners to create and share significant knowledge within a group. This paper deals with two different modes of group interaction- distributed and shared interaction. Distributed interaction depends on the external representation of individual knowledge, while shared interaction is concerned with sharing knowledge in group action. In order to facilitate these group interactions, this paper emphasizes the utilization of appropriate CSCL scripts, and then proposes the conceptual framework of CSCL scripts which integrate the existing scripts such as implicit, explicit, internal and external scripts. By means of the model regarding CSCL scripts based on the mode of group interaction, the implications for research on the design of CSCL scripts are explored.
In this paper, we propose a new method to stable simulation the directional ice shape by coupling of freezing solver and viscous water flow. The proposed ice modeling framework considers viscous fluid flow in the direction of ice growth, which is important in freezing simulation. The water simulation solution uses the method of applying a new viscous technique to the IISPH(Implicit incompressible SPH) simulation, and the ice direction and the glaze effect use the proposed anisotropic freezing solution. The condition in which water particles change state to ice particles is calculated as a function of humidity and new energy with water flow. Humidity approximates a virtual water film on the surface of the object, and fluid flow is incorporated into our anisotropic freezing solution to guide the growth direction of ice. As a result, the results of the glaze and directional freezing simulations are shown stably according to the flow direction of viscous water.

The semi-implicit scheme proposed by Backhaus is introduced to solve two-dimensional shallow water equation. This mothod is applied for the numerical model solving surface elevation and velocity field of Geum River estuary. For the verification of the method, numerical solutions by this model are compared with ones by Heap's well known explicit model. Solutions of two models resemble each other. The time-step chosen for the semi-implicit scheme turned out to be 3 to 6 times longer than explicit model depending on the stringent CFL criterion. The computation time could be reduced at least 50%. It was proved that this scheme is easy to handle dry banks which can be seen in Geum River estuary and numerical stability is obtained for long time computation.

This study considers movement-based registration (MBR). In MBR, a mobile station (MS) performs location registration whenever the number of entering cells reaches the specified movement threshold M. MBR is simple and its implementation is quite straightforward. However, it may result in more registrations than other similar schemes. An improved MBR scheme called MBIR (MBR with implicit registration) was proposed to reduce registration cost of MBR and its approximated performance was analyzed. In this study, we point out some problems of the previous analysis method and propose an exact analysis method of MBIR. Using the exact analysis method, we show that the previous analysis includes considerable errors and improvement of MBIR in our study seems to be larger than in the previous study.
