This paper proposes a new direct numerical integration algorithm for solving equation of motion in structural dynamics problems with nonlinear stiffness. The new implicit method's degree of accuracy is higher than that of existing methods due to the higher order of the acceleration. Two parameters are defined, leading to a new family of unconditionally stable methods, which helps to take greater time steps in integration and eliminate concerns about the duration of solving. The method developed can be utilized for a number of solid plane finite elements, examples of which are given to compare the proposed method with existing ones. The results indicate the superiority of the proposed method.
In the previous development of the recursive thermostat chained fully flexible cell molecular dynamics simulation, implicit time integration method such as generalized leapfrog integration is used. The implicit algorithm is very much complicated and not easy to show time reversibility because it is solved by the nonlinear iterative procedure. Thus we develop simple, explicit symplectic time integration formula for the recursive thermostat chained fully flexible unit cell simulation. Uniaxial tension test is performed to verify the present explicit algorithm. We check that the present simulation satisfies the ergodic hypothesis for various values of fictitious mass and coefficient of multiple thermostat system. The proposed method should be helpful to predict mechanical and thermal behavior of nano-scale structure.
A new predictor-corrector explicit time integration algorithm is presented for solving structural dynamics problems. The basis of the algorithm is the implicit generalized-.alpha. method recently developed by the authors. Like its implicit parent, the explicit generalized-$\alpha$ method is a one- parameter family of algorithms in which the parameter defines the high-frequency numerical dissipation. The algorithm can be utilized effectively for linear and nonlinear structural dynamics calculations is which numerical dissipation is needed to reduce spurious oscillations inherent in non-dissipative time integration methods used to solve wave propagation problems.
Numerical boundary conditions are as important as the governing equations when analyzing the fluid flows numerically. An explicit boundary condition method updates the solutions at the boundaries with extrapolation from the interior of the computational domain, while the implicit boundary condition method in conjunction with an implicit time integration method solves the solutions of the entire computational domain including the boundaries simultaneously. The implicit boundary condition method, therefore, is more robust than the explicit boundary condition method. In this paper, steady compressible 2-Dimensional Navier-Stokes solver is developed. We present the implicit boundary condition method coupled with LU-SGS(Lower Upper Symmetric Gauss Seidel) method. Also, the explicit boundary condition method is implemented for comparison. The preconditioning Navier-Stokes equations are solved on unstructured meshes. The numerical computations for a number of flows show that the implicit boundary condition method can give accurate solutions.
The explicit and implicit time integration methods are applied effectively to analyze sheet metal stamping processes, which include the forming stage and the springback stage consecutively. The explicit time integration method has better merits in the forming stage including highly complicated three-dimensional contact conditions. By contrary, the implicit time integration method is better for analyzing springback since the complicated contact conditions are removed and the computing time to get the final static state is short. In this work, brief descriptions of the formulation and the factor study for springack simulations are presented. Further, the simulated results for the S-rail and the roof panel stamping processes are shown and discussed.
In transportation geotechnical engineering, stress-strain behavior of earth structures has been analyzed by numerical simulations with the implemented plasticity constitutive model. It is a fact that many advanced plasticity constitutive models on predicting the mechanical behavior of soils have been developed as well as experimental research works for geotechnical applications in the past decades. In this study, recently developed, a unified constitutive model for both clay and sand, which is referred to as CASM (clay and sand model), was compared with a classical constitutive model, Cam-Clay model. Moreover, integration methods of stress-strain rate equations using CASM were presented for simulation of undrained and drained triaxial compression tests. As a conclusion, it was observed that semi-implicit integration method has more improved accuracy of capturing strain rate response to applied stress than explicit integration by the multiple correction and iteration.

The Real-Time Hybrid Test system presented in this paper is based on the pseudodynamic test method, and it combines physical testing with model-based simulation. The system is designed to achieve a rate of loading that is significantly higher than that of a conventional pseudodynamic test approaching the real-time response of a structure subjected to earthquake loads. To provide robust computation environment for the analysis of many degree-of-freedom structures, the system adopts an implicit time integration scheme in the model-based simulation. This paper presents an overview of the developed system and numerical simulations that were conducted to evaluate the performance of the computation scheme adopted here. Results of these studies have demonstrated the good performance of the computation scheme for real-time multiple-degree-of-freedom tests.
The successful performance of any numerical geotechnical simulation depends on the accuracy and efficiency of the numerical implementation of constitutive model used to simulate the stress-strain (constitutive) response of the soil. The corner stone of the numerical implementation of constitutive models is the numerical integration of the incremental form of soil-plasticity constitutive equations over a discrete sequence of time steps. In this paper a well known two-surface soil plasticity model is implemented using a generalized implicit return mapping algorithm to arbitrary convex yield surfaces referred to as the Closest-Point-Projection method (CPPM). The two-surface model describes the nonlinear behavior of coarse-grained materials by incorporating a bounding surface concept together with isotropic and kinematic hardening as well as fabric formulation to account for the effect of fabric formation on the unloading response. In the course of investigating the performance of the CPPM integration method, it is proven that the algorithm is an accurate, robust, and efficient integration technique useful in finite element contexts. It is also shown that the algorithm produces a consistent tangent operator $\frac{d\sigma}{d\varepsilon}$ during the iterative process with quadratic convergence rate of the global iteration process.
Although the family methods with unconditional stability and numerical dissipation have been developed for structural dynamics they all are implicit methods and thus an iterative procedure is generally involved for each time step. In this work, a new family method is proposed. It involves no nonlinear iterations in addition to unconditional stability and favorable numerical dissipation, which can be continuously controlled. In particular, it can have a zero damping ratio. The most important improvement of this family method is that it involves no nonlinear iterations for each time step and thus it can save many computationally efforts when compared to the currently available dissipative implicit integration methods.
